GR Yaris (Gen 2) prospective GR Yaris owner here - in need of feedback

I find it impossible to consider going for this car without the LSD. It's possibly the one thing that I couldn't live without (and that includes the MT as I expressed previously :D). I think the LSD is a must have, although I can't comment on going aftermarket is the better option or not

For some reason most people don’t know there’s actually a rear LSD factory option on the RC that could be spec’d when ordered. See the Japanese GRY online configurator. It’s a mechanical LSD, not the typical Torsen. That means it uses clutches instead of gears, so it reacts faster and locks more aggressively when traction breaks (similar to GRMN’s mechanical diff). It’s basically more track focused; sharper, more predictable, and less lazy mid-corner. The downside is it’s not as civil on the street, but if you’re chasing that pure, connected feel, the mechanical setup hits harder than the Torsen ever could.

Maybe they are listed here (but can't access this page properly): https://toyotagazooracing.com/jp/gr/grparts/gryaris/

I think another downside of the clutched-based based ones (Torsen is also 'mechanical'..) is the maintenance
I m a bit worried what they would ask here for servicing them o_O
But maybe it worths the investment (if you track the car more often than not)

Just to clarify, when Toyota and most manufacturers say “mechanical” LSD, they’re not talking about a Torsen. A Torsen is a gear type torque sensing diff that uses worm gears and friction between them, not clutch plates. It’s technically mechanical in a broad sense, but not in the way Toyota and other manufacturers define it.

Toyota’s mechanical LSD option on the RC (and GRMN) uses clutch plates that physically lock the diff under load, so it reacts faster and stays more consistent when one wheel unloads. That’s why it’s considered more track focused.

You’re right that clutch type diffs need a bit more attention like fluid changes or rebuilds after heavy use, but that’s mostly if you track the car a lot. For regular street driving, it doesn’t need much more maintenance than a Torsen. But like everything in the car world, it’s a trade off between sharper handling and a little more upkeep.

If you want to see the option, go to https://toyotagazooracing.com/jp/gr/yaris/grade/rc/, translate the page in Chrome, and click on Estimate Simulation. Then select the RC manual grade and you’ll see the high speed rear diff option, which equates to roughly 400 USD. You can also add things like the intercooler spray or extra radiator, and even with those options the car still comes out much cheaper than the RZ.

You also get a proper turn key ignition lol. In my world this is the best spec of the GR Yaris for the money. Probably the best spec of any car currently in production anywhere on the planet. If things go well, I’m seriously thinking about trading my gen 1 for the gen 2 RC.

Understood

But I m based in Germany - and even if I wanted to go custom with these variants, Toyota doesn't offer them here I think

And that‘s the inconvenient part, also when you are based in Switzerland…. 😒

One thing somehow neglected to ask - service costs

Although those will vary (country, garage), what are the typical (scheduled/maintenance) service costs you've paid so far?

I read its like every 10000km driven or every six months? (really? every six months?)

Or if you have a link or a document that outlines those - even better

OK, thanks
Saw some (reasonable) prices for oil change in Italy
And some nice docs shared with the intervals/components I was looking for (although would be nice to have a cost figure for any of those Intermediate services)

What I didn't understood is why the fuel injection cleaner is applicable only to those *listed countries?

Since at least at the begining, my usage category will be not 'severe', I m OK with that so far

The A110 services costs are surely higher (but looking into how much higher!)

Have a chat with your local dealer for costs?

Will do
Basically still waiting for him to reply
I begin to realise that dealers are reluctant to submit cost figures, even though I did use the word 'approximate'
They rather just talk about it. I understand

I was told that the service interval is annual or 10,000 km
Cost of the first service: 400EUR
Cost of the second service: 650EUR
The interim check every 6 months costs 80EUR
Those figures seem to be more or less on par to what I ve seen for other countries

Regarding the 'extras', it would seem from a PDF that I have, most of them are included (as I was also told by the retailer)
E.g. "JBL Soundsystem mit 8 Lautsprechern" is included (if there a more 'premium' sound system?)

There are some additional accessories e.g.
Dashcam Pioneer VREC-Z710SH Full HD Frontkamera
Dashcam Pioneer VREC-Z810SH 4K Frontkamera

I would be interested in a dashcam only if there's a security function (i.e. auto-record is someone approaches the car), but I don't think those options do that

Just few questions regarding the Milltek options (attached)

Apparently an aftermarket exhaust can be ordered within and fitted by Toyota

Last Saturday, I finally found a Gen2 (manual) to test drive and it came fitted with this exhaust
Aesthetically (and sound) much improved compared to stock
If I decide to buy the GRY, I ll probably be considering this option

At Toyota the exhaust is listed 1400EUR, excluding the cost of the exhaust tip (as per prices in the attachment)
At the Milltek website: https://www.millteksport.com/Toyota...lished_Trims_ECE_Approved--product--6716.html
Total cost, including the stainless steel tip is 1500EUR
(But I doubt they would let me order from outside and have it fitted)

My questions:

a) Milltek diameter is listed 76.20mm - what is the stock diameter?

b) Although the rear silencier of the Milltek is much more compact, the center silencier is quite the opposite - the Milltek is much thicker (compared to the stock, as seen in the 2nd photo). Space between that and the prop shaft seems marginal...is that OK? Cause I m pretty sure, under certain conditions there's bound to be some 'play' down there (although I think the photo is from a Gen1, not sure if there's any difference)

Anyone here has the Milltek installed on their Gen2? Any remarks?

Oh wow they provide that themselves? Kinda cool. Regarding the fitment, personally I don't have any experience with this but when I was researching aftermarket exhaust options Miltek one comes with additional bracket which is easily installed on frame. It should help keeping the exhaust more stable (but don't quote me on this, I could be wrong)

Yeah, I also found it strange. But I think I ve also seen in the past (other manufacturers) having Akrapovic options

Yes, clips are provided for proper fitting/stability, but there's always gonna be some wobble down there and margins are already tiny
But on the other hand I can't imagine Toyota officially listing an aftermarket option in their brochure without having properly test it first!?

I m expecting a final quote for the GRY soon. My extras are: color, BBS rims (which comes as 'standard' but +3K...), and Milltek exhaust

I also had a talk wrt to service costs - and voila:
1st year (or 10K km) = 400EUR
2nd year = 600EUR
Every 6 months = +80EUR

Naturally, after hearing this, I was concerned for the service costs in the longer term (and was told that it gets even more expensive later on..)
So what should I expect in a course of say 5yrs?
If I pay 600EUR+ / year a wishful estimation would be 3K minimum for standard, scheduled maintenance (plus consumables e.g. pads, tyres depending on use). Does anyone have any figures to share for comparison (servicing the car at an official Toyota dealer)

For comparison, and from what I gathered for the A110, the service costs over the span of 5yrs is just under 5000EUR
The scary part is the 600EUR they want for the oil change (...) And I was considering to do shorter intervals...

Back going back to the GRY - I m curious about what the costs are for 'major' works e.g. timing belt, clutch disc etc
I get that Toyota wants to have more frequent checks on a car which features plenty of motorsport-derived tech, but I have inquired further as to gain more insight of additional service costs. E.g. oil change

How long are you planning on keeping the car?

I wouldn’t worry about things like timing chain (not a belt) unless you’re planning on owning it for a good while, like 10+ years, it’s just not worth factoring in.

Apart from a few isolated cases where I suspect abuse, I don’t recall anyone having to even change a clutch and many owners are now well over 100k km on their original clutches.

Germany seems a little more expensive for servicing compared to here in Estonia. Running these cars can be expensive if you daily them and require 2 services per year like me - Im doing approx 20,000km a year in mine (roughly servicing every 6 months). My first service was around 300 euro at 10,000km and listed below is my invoice from the second service at 20,000km. My 3rd service at 30,000km was around 300ish euros from memory and I have my '4th year service' coming up in the next month even though I have owned the car for less than 2 years ;) The 4th year service is around 650 euro as it includes the change of oils to gear box and diffs.

Clutch is an expensive replacement, but if your clutch is not abused, it is nothing to worry about.

GR Yaris doesn't run on a belt - Its a chain driven engine like @Duke said.

But not sure at which point it makes sense to do the servicing at a non-Toyota-official garage and therefore save quite a lot from those bills (at the disadvantage of losing the warranty)

Thanks for sharing
Yeah, it's not the cost of the parts - its the labour here that bumps up the price
I would say like around +40% maybe compared to here :cautious:

I probably won't be doing 20K km (perhaps close to half of that)

I was planning to do a short 5K km engine oil/filter for the first interval, but afterwards stick to the fixed schedule

But what about gear box and diff lubricants? Don't you guys think it could also do a little earlier than the '4th year' service??
