GR Yaris POWER STEERING FAILS mid turn on the Nürburgring

Sounds like a fun build.

The few times I had it was mostly during trailbraking. Definitely feels like the steering "locks up" but it's possible to steer with a lot of effort.

As my suspension is hard it's not a big diffrence to drive without arb. I needed better turn-in and less understeer so tried to uncouple one side to get both front wheels on the ground at the same time and it worked. Swedish tracks are small and tight so need to change directions fast more than be stable on long fast sweepers.
I do not know too much about suspension setups at this level BUT when I brought up your idea with the ARB to my shop, they told me that this can be very dangerous.

I was told that back in the day, Mercedes tried that with one of their A-class and apparently the car used to roll over.

These guys deal with race cars daily, they told me to tell you to be careful!

I visited the local track today with stock suspension and cup2 and power steering loss was easily noted every time in ”fast” right hander where you brake into.

It starts when you trail brake into corner and front wheels get ’loaded’. Disappeares after 1s.

Thought of maybe raising an issue of this as it happens with stock suspension and wheels.
This is exactly how it happened to me! Did your steering wheel feel like it was locked for 1 sec or just a bit heavier?

Are your tyres standard width?
Mine, are not standard. My tire width is 255.

On the exact same setup with the original wheels and 4S tires, never had a single issue. Even on the Nürburgring GP track where you have to trail brake a lot and hard. I guess the tires lost grip before the steering failed.

This steering issue is a huge deal. I can't believe that the internet is not filled with this topic.

My steering wheel locks mid turn..makes the car pretty much useless for track use.

Am i supposed to downgrade my car so I can steer into the turns? Haha.. shiieet... :(

Here is the car with original wheel and 4S tires, plus 20mm spacers.
The tires squeaked in almost every turn BUT I never had any issues with the steering locking up.

Strictly speaking it hasn't been signed off for anything but stock set-up, so any 'upgrades' are on your own prowess with the engineering involved....

You know the spring rates of your Motons? If they are e.g. 150N/mm all round then you have effectively increased the roll stiffness of the front conpared to the rear (I will explain more if numbers exist).

Already with the coilovers you changed the car significantly so any new handling set-up is on your own/the shop responsibility. Removing front arb will make the car more prone to oversteer, you could compensate this with different camber and toe settings...

Ah that was you we were seeing last week with that pink panther =D. We had the same. For us its a mix of wide tires caster and the german word is "Lenkrollhalbmesser" i had first slicks on JR Wheels with 38 offsett at bilster berg on braking zones with compresson the sterring was that hard that i thought were going to die. you are using 15mm spacers in front with 255 wheels et30?!?! How that supposed not to scrap anything within the wheel arch?.

After we swapped to normal et45 it got way better. you have a bit of getting harder steering wheel at metzgesfeld and wehrseifen sometimes hohe acht. I cant believe that karl doenst know about that when piero is doing sub8 laps.... Try to reduce caster and get rid of that 15mm spacers in front and it will be much better, when not fully removed which cant be at the moment.

You are using 150 springs on GR on nordschleife ? Show me some onboard id like to see that charm lap
I think I have the exact same setup on the coilovers as @DrSetup , from Wiborg Engineering. It's bumpy in low speed like on residential streets, but not more then that it works for me.

When I posted it on my mebers page I wrote: "Link to youtube videos of my last lap last year, a good lap even if I was help up 2 times by new Porsches (991/992) and a yellow flag and the PS4S's were on the too warm side."

Yea. I’ve not seen you taking hatzenbach hohenrain chicane or Wippermann curb which would be interesting to see Overall it’s a decent lap not pushing for the limit where you can see the overall stiffness. Also it’s not topic here. But I can’t imagine how this is supposed to drive on proper 255 tires which is why i asked 😀 let me know when you go there again id like to join in the car if possible.

I will be there today at 17:00.. weather looks good! Let's see if i can mess up my power steering again.

If any of you are doing some laps today, let me know. :)
