GR86 Oil consumption

It's easy to tell if your PCV valve has failed open. At idle, take your oil filler cap off and place your hand over the opening. If you can feel vacuum the valve has failed open as it should always be shut at idle.
Thanks a lot! Kind of late for my case, but will keep in mind on other cases. It is a common failure point on the race cara here, so I will see another soon enough.

No problem. It sounds like they are easy to replace on these cars and cheap. Some are incorporated into the rocker cover which makes it a pricey repair.

Hmm. Maybe time to pop to Halfords and grab a top up bottle.

It's been about 8 months since the car was serviced, so it's not a huge amount of loss. But I was hoping not to have to worry about it at all between services. Nevermind. Maybe I'll check the PCV using the method someone mentioned earlier.

Was it definitely full at the last service?

Yeah.
Weird thing is, I took it for a drive this morning, then popped to Halfords later for a top up bottle. When I got home, I checked it again...and it was slightly higher than when I took that photo, at pretty much half full. Both checks were done after the car has been sat for at least a few hours. So I stuck 500ml in and called it a day. The dipstick is just a PITA to read accurately.

I've been a bit lazy and haven't checked my oil for a while. I got a bit of a surprise when I noticed it's used about 7-800ml of oil! Mine had a deliberate overfill so it only just dipped below the max level but considering its never used any in the last few thousand miles it caught me off guard. Sounds very much the same behaviour as the OP of this thread described. Car is at 9200 miles, I will definitely be keeping an eye on it. My GT86 never used a drop between services.

Yep that is the same sort of thing that’s happened to me. I am on 26k now and it’s randomly happened twice

About 4mm below the top mark today after slightly over filling about 1k miles ago.

Nothing a little top up can't fix but I'll be sure to keep checking it regularly.

I read a bit of a horror story today on another forum where a US owner didn't check his oil at all in his first year of owner ship and his engine blew as a result at 12k when it dropped way too low after going over the service interval.

It's his own fault for not checking and missing the service but still something I wouldnt wish upon anyone.

Do you all guys run 5W-30? If not then this is your sign to do so ASAP. Ever since running 5W-30 my consumption is nearly gone, it still consumes a little bit during track days (100ml maximum per event), but that is absolutely normal.

Failed PCV usually results in outrageous consumption like 1L per 1000 km or miles. And I wouldn't blame PCV if you don't have to top up every 1 - 2k miles.

I have the luxury of renovated parking garage and fortunately the floor is perfectly flat. And I can guarantee, even a small rock under a tire will distort the reading. And on top of that it takes ages for the oil to return to the pan from the heads. If you don't have a perfect place to park, just try to standardize your measurements so each dipstick reading is accurate and comparable to the last one.

I'll check my level the weekend but I haven't driven it much so don't expect to see usage. It hasn't really in the last 13000 miles but I will switch to 5W-30 come service in December as I do plan on doing track days and further drives next year. This year has been nuts so hasn't happened.

Oil level is measured in the same place every time, I get what you are saying but when the car doesn't consume oil over 9000 miles then suddenly it does that to me points to some other than oil weight. Same goes for the OP, he done 20k without consumption then has it sporadically. PCV valves can be intermittent, they operate in various states.

5w30 could improve it but then it's just masking a potential true cause. Given the reputation of PCV valves on Subaru platforms and the fact they are to be considered a consumable I'm more suspicious of that.

An interesting read, mine used a mildly concerning 1.5 litres on run in with numerous top ups to keep it above minimum.
Serviced at 9500 miles and again at 19000 and it didnt seem to use a drop in-between.
Ive become a bit more relaxed on checking the level so I think I need to be a tad more diligent!!

I topped up 200ml at 14000 miles on the weekend. Think it's only the 2nd time I've ever put some in. I don't drive it enough and when I do I tend to push on harder. Will look at going for 5W-30 for the change in December just to see.

I was watching a video earlier where they were discussing the effects running an engine at low RPM. One of these was increased blow-by and oil consumption caused by 'lugging' the engine - WOT at low rpm.

Has anyone found correlation between average rpm and oil consumption? Please don't take this as a forum fact, I'm more asking the question than anything.

I actually want to increase the idle rpm but because I want to put a lightweight flywheel, of course that will mean a tune and voiding the warranty so I am holding on it for the time being.

If my car is anything to go by high rpm causes oil consumption 😂

I've done less mileage this year and consumption has settled, not sure if that's less mileage or it's done burning some extra 🤷‍♂️

Just taking my car for first service. Checked this morning and oil was a little over minimum on one side and more in the middle on the other side. 7700 miles. I redline it often and the car is pretty much driven every day.

I decided to go 0w20 again in the end but bought a 1 litre bottle just to keep an eye and more importantly know what they are putting in it for future reference.

Due to order some oil for the service. What is everyone using now as there was discussions about upping the weight? I've been happy enough with the Millers 0W-20 but can't find a 0W-30 that meets the spec, only a vague mention of Asian manufacturers.
