I’ve read some stuff online with people getting higher power figures than quoted from Toyota, is this fake news or actually happening?

Also does anyone think Toyota will be running a downtuned map to keep it away from the supra 2.0, would be good to know the full NA tuning potenting of the GR86 and whether a remap could bring it up much

The GR86 dynos at 210-215 hp at the wheels, stock GT86 does around 165-170 hp, so that's around a 25% real increase in power. Cars typically dyno around 15% less at the wheels, so the real crankshaft horsepower for the GR86 is likely closer to 250 bhp.

Compare that to the 228 bhp and 200 bhp manufacturer figures for GR86 and GT86 and you can see where the rumours come from.

I doubt you will get much more out of the car without forced induction, maybe 5-10% extra with a less restricitve exhaust and a remap, but the potential is definitely there and I don't personally feel the car lacks power.

A Remap on its own probably won't do alot, however there appears to be some good gains with a full exhaust and intake system.

Revolution a Japanese tuning shop, have already got 280PS out of their GR86. Although I've not seen what ECU management system they are using.

280ps is impressive!

I’m aware it’s rare to get much gains from a NA engine with a remap my line of thought was if it was purposely downtuned to not rival the supra 2.0 then a more than normal increase in ponies might of been achievable. I remember the bmw 125i running much less than 130i with same engine and a remap released something like 30-40bhp because it was downtuned standard.

I wonder what the real times for 0-60 and other acceleration times are compared to quotes

Dynapack hub dyno numbers tend to be optimistic so I would take the above graph with a grain of salt. Even so, even if reality were 20hp less it would still be good...

I do think that people that think this will be much the same as the GT86 just a bit more might miss out on an great NA driving experience. I think I previously figured out that at 4000rpm or so where the old one had its torque dip, the GR version produces up to 40% more torque. That's... significant and should transform the subjective impression...

interesting that the EU spec GR is officially rated a few hp more than US/Japan - I would've thought the GPF would've made it slightly worse or is that more of a turbo engine thing?

The US cars have an extra charcoal filter in the airbox which is a requirement, that may be why they are rated a bit lower. Japan and the EU gets the full fat version, there is no GPF.

Found this in the Owner’s Manual , requires 98 but if you can’t get it 95 is ok and won’t affect engine durability or drive ability 🤷‍♂️

I'll be using Tesco Momentum, or VPower... I use to be a Shell Snob and only use Vpower... but since moving to momentum I can't see any difference in any of the cars I drive and for what 3p more a litre than regular. It's a no brainer.

You own one or planning to buy?

I thought GPF was required by law in the EU and UK now? Every car I’ve had since 2019 has had one.

I don't believe so. GR86 has 2 cats like the predecessor, primary in the manifold, secondary in the front pipe.

I should of paid more attention to your profile never knew at the time your from U.K. haha. I thought this was already released in other countries
It is, in Japan and US for example.

To your question. Most performance cars from Toyota but also from other japanese manufacturers like Honda are some kind of underrated buy factory. That's not only in times of the prominent gentleman's agreement. Toyota is just the most known example with the 2JZ Supra.

I asked some one at Toyota japan why they are doing so. He told me they observe the typical clustering of the cars and choose the lowest frequently achieved number. He said it's more down to mentality than engineering. Understatement is quite a big part of japanese working mentality.

Is 0-60 that important 🤔 I’m past traffic light drag racing , more interested in mid range performance 30/50 , 30/60 etc these days and how quickly it will scrub off speed at legal limits.

It looks like the car requires 3rd gear to hit 60 as well. So under 6 seconds is decent considering.
