GR Yaris (Gen 2) Intelligent Speed Assist / ISA

No, it was compulsory already 2022 for new homologated models, now from July 2024 is it compulsory for all new cars produced irrespective how old the model is.

Notable cars that can no longer be sold in the EU and countries following the EU rules are the Porsche Macan and GR86, and probably many many more that will slowly slide away without much fuss...
Perfect and short to the point. It helps to have English as your native language, thank you :).

I apologize to you and to @Greenthumb, you are totally right, I've just read the original text of EU Regulation. I forgot I should never trust Italian magazines and journalists... And I also see that many countries outside EU are following suit. I hope that such Regulations will be quickly dismissed once rear-end collisions number will skyrocket in a matter of minutes.

Seems like Toyota USA shares my views on the direction cars are heading with autopilot and electrification etc. Cool little piece of marketing, and definitely a little nod to Initial D I would say. And a lot of not so EV-positive social commentary :ROFLMAO:

I went out in a 2024 Corolla yesterday which has the new isa system.

Basically it’s an extension of the road sign assist (rsa) so the car still displays the current road speed but now if you exceed it even by 1 mph the symbol starts flashing and car starts beeping at you.

It’s possible to turn it off or just disable the beeps however it’s via sub-menu system in the car settings. Which is fine but the annoying thing is it defaults back to fully on each time you turn the engine off. I could not figure out how to keep it off. Figures crossed it’s button controlled on the new GR Yaris

I live in Wales and all roads are now 20mph some of which are being questioned if they should be put back to 30mph. The car was beeping away at 21mph. It didn’t make for a relaxing driving experience and I was glad to get back in my 2021 RAV4.

Very good information 👍

I just miss the information on how to switch off the drive assistants like ISA?
Possibly via the drive mode button? 🤔
Since Thursday, a brand new Corolla Sports Tourer GR (2024) has been in the Family-fleet. If the GRY gets the ISA thing exactly like that... then goodnight. No one can sugarcoat it, you'll be in for a shock😏.

You have to click through a crazy on-board computer. Without it, it's undrivable. 53 in a 50 zone and the concert starts. We have a 30 zone here, but because of the construction, you can't even drive 25. Even then the concert starts, because it's too slow :). Restart, everything again from the beginning. But the steering intervention is even worse, I've never experienced anything like it before and I thought BMW was going crazy.

Had an Audi A3 lone car with this tech. It ruined an otherwise half decent set of wheels :(

On the german Toyota Website the manual is already available. Tu turn off ISA(RSA) you have to press the "Settings" button on the display, then go to "personalized settings" , then to "RSA". And from there you can deactivate it. It turns automatically on again after every motor start.

One interesting statement in the manual is following: The new GR Yaris supports "Over the air" automatic updates for the cars safety/multimedia software, so its done automatically.
And then it says more below *deactivating certain safety systems can be disabled in the future if laws changing

I dont wanna be too pessimistic. But I already see the EU making the speed control laws even more strict in future, toyota updates the system without asking us, and boom, fun is over.

Ok, same in the Corolla. Absolute Horror.

And to all of you who are trying to make it sound better, we'll talk to you again once you've spent a few days with the system🥺.

Thanks for the info. The manual is dated 2024-04-08 so maybe tomorrow there will be some new information for Germany.

Does the speed sign recognition work better in the new Corolla? In the GRY its wrong many times and it does not even know stuff like the "Ortsausgangsschild". Combined with the ISA stuff this would be a double nightmare.

The most important car magazine in Italy ("Quattroruote") performed a test on ISA systems recently.
The outcome was a real disaster, partly due to faults in the system, and partly to the miserable conditions (in average) of street signals in Italy.
For instance, while driving on a highway, the ISA read the speed limit on an exit ramp (in Italy they are always insanely low, set at 40 km/h), and the car abruptly slowed down from the regular limit (110 or 130km/h) to 40 km/h. Chances of being reared: roughly 100%.
Moreover the ISA couldn't understand when a reduced speed limit was specific to some kind of vehicle, like lorries.
Through the 40 kms of the test, they encountered 32 speed-limit changes, and 4 of them were in the span of few hundreds meters.
I guess it was like being driven by a drunk auto-pilot...
Overall, the ISA made 28 mistakes in the span of the test, and the magazine concluded that they are not ready for being used on ordinary roads (will they ever be, anyway?).
Maybe the EU (and politicians worldwide) should listen carefully to this kind of tests and to the feedback by daily drivers before imposing a safety threatening system like this, not to mention the option to make it permanent one day.
Otherwise the Mk1 would became the last GRY to own, I guess. (This is also to justify the posting about ISA in the MY2024 thread... 😬)

This is sheer madness. The MK1 is already bogged down with pointless safety features. They're at risk of ruining the MK2 with this nonsense. Most modern safety systems are more about appearance. They offer drivers a dangerously false sense of security. Sure, they can help. But for every potential collision they prevent, there's a chance they could cause one by intervening at the wrong time. For instance, my pre-collision system nearly caused an accident when it braked suddenly at a stoplight because of a nearby biker - who was not actually on a collision course with me, as we both saw each other. It acted when it shouldn't have, almost resulting in me being sideswiped by other cars. I've had to permanently disable it. There are countless scenarios where these systems could do more harm than good, but apparently, our politicians think they know best which aids we need.

it's a catastrophe. There's a place in the neighboring district where cars slam on the brakes at 100 km/h because they all see a 10 km/h sign, which doesn't exist. The Corolla is one of them. You can probably imagine what has already happened here and what will happen in the future. The whole thing just doesn't work and it was still unleashed on people.

And it can no longer be deactivated with the press of a button. You can't fight your way through a menu. You have to click everything off individually and with some you even have to hold it down for a long time to turn it off. And every time you stop, you have to start all over again. That takes all the fun out of it.

Sounds it like it's the same system as the Corolla then. I experience that a month ago and it's not the best. https://www.gr-zoo.com/threads/intelligent-speed-assist-isa.5878/post-94820

I was really excited about this car but that excitement has faded with all the recent revelations about price etc. :(
Some say there's a hologram of Greta Thunberg displayed in the rear view mirror if throttle pedal exceeds over 60%, speakers playing how dare you at the same time.

So the MK1 GRY is the last new car I will ever own then. Oh the joys of being a still relatively young car enthusiast and watching your hobby die!

The excitement after booking my Mk2 made me totally forget the ISA problem... But this is serious trouble indeed, since it looks like it could heavily hamper any driving experience on any new car. Add to this the thing of the on-the-fly software update, and the Mk2 could be doomed for good one day or another.
The only options left to fix this would be related to tampering with the software of the car in some way, and for many reasons it would be a path I wouldn't consider taking.
I know a few of my friends who bought a new car recently, and I'm really surprised no one is lamenting the problems with ADAS in any way.
I already had many troubles with ADAS, even before ISA adoption: car braking abruptly with no reasons, the lane assistant putting me in danger while I tried correcting it, and I felt being all alone in complaining about this.
I have to conclude that for the most of people driving a car has become just a quiet opportunity to check on Instagram and TikTok, while not realising at all what happens inside and (even worse) outside the car.
I am really disgusted by the turn things are taking with the approach to cars, and Gazoo should realise sooner than later that they need to set the ADAS with specific controls in cars like GRY, otherwise if they sell them with the settings of a Yaris Cross, it's outrageous to spend 60k euros for a car enslaved by faulty software systems.
I need to have a deep brain-storming with myself on my Mk2 order now...

All this complaining about ISA and pricepoint here. I think there is still plenty of us genuinely excited to be buying (hopefully) the Mk2 GR Yaris.

I'm willing to click some buttons to disable annoying stuff when pushing.

I know ISA ruleset won't change in 12 months and update the car to be useless. Current ISA technology is not reliable enough to make cars know the speed limit correctly most of the time and that cannot be magically updated and enforced OTA. Most countries around where I live they don't even recognize town signs to adjust speed accordingly (where it would be most important to enforce).

I don't believe Mk3 is going to happen in a way that will be an overall improvement. I've got some hints for people in quite high positions that next-gen car is happening, but will be very different car.

And pricepoint.. yeah.. 10k less would have been amazing. I've made extensive research in what I can buy for this money to fit what I'm looking for and it's priced okay. 5k less wouldn't really make a difference to people who planned to buy this car I guess.
