Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

Just a reminder all, this thread is titled Hyundai Ioniq 5N, so the focus of discussion should be that.

You are all welcome to discuss other Electric Cars, old tech, alternatives cars etc throughout the forum and indeed some of the subjects do already have dedicated threads and if it doesn't start a new thread.

The more we all stick to the subject / thread title, the better the forum will be so please make an effort.

Oh. Ok.

I had a good nose around one yesterday at Paide Rally. It was being used as one of the organisers cars. I am not in the market for an electric car at the moment but if I were the 5N would be top of the list. Might go for a cheeky test drive though!

The new thing on youtube is that if an EV is well reviewed, then the review has to be bought. In the reviews themselves are pro journos and enthusiasts with a channel that are smiling and laughing and usually actually digging the theatre, the performance, the handling. A lot of them.

I've taken a few car friends out for a drive, the reactions are the same....

You should @Euge

I've been enjoying watching this lady rebuild her Celica, but also on her Youtube Channel, this ex-USAF Engineer and car rebuilding enthusiast gives the 5N a good review. Having owned a Kona N, I'd be happy to own one of these down the line.

She's quite goofy in a good way, and kudos for showing us under the car what it looks like. Didn't expect the 10...

Yeah, she really puts some effort and energy into her rebuilds (and YouTube content) with a fine attention to detail, especially for someone who isn’t sponsored by a corporation.

So WLTP is 440km, for me in practice I'm around 320km with a mix of driving, driving it hard on a back road you're down to 200km range. Sounds bad?

As it turns out, the GR Yaris would have about the same range when driven hard and out on back roads, would also need to drive back to civilisation to find a fuelling station.

I practice, neither have been a hinderance to driving fun.

Then comes the amazing part. 2,2 tonne car driven at least as fast point to point, accelerating faster, is using one fourth to one fifth of the energy. How is that even possible? Answer: efficiency and amazing regen on brakes.
Charging at home, the cost of electrons is less then 10% of the cost of the gasoline. Even at a quick charger it's half. Like for like gasoline performance bruiser (2tonne 600hp) would be almost double as expensive again....

Just some fun (for engineers at least lol) facts...

Does quite well on a tight autocross course, 3rd place overall with a new to the car driver:

You might like this video. I was there that day and in person the thing was rapid! (the GR Yaris in the video towards the end is a forum member I think).

Great vid. Wow, what a machine, looks like an absolute riot 😍
A smaller (cheaper) one, i20n size would be very attractive.. hopefully that's where the Alpine A290 will be

Yep, reception by people whos opinion matters to me in the review space (the ones that can drive) has been amazing. Happy to see Joe didn't disappoint and could set his admitted prejudices aside.

As it turns out the size fits my life great, but yeah this gives high hopes for smaller EV enthusiast cars. One key here is 800V though, for the track tech to work with high regen and low heat (4x lower heat with half the current) the higher voltage is almost a necessity, and no small platforms yet as of now with 800v tech afaik. Maybe new battery tech with low resistance could also do the trick...

Some people still struggle with the fake noises though. If anyone here reading this does so, I can give a small lecture on the subject ;)

I am quite curious about the ‘gearbox’ - what happens if you don’t upshift for a while and it hits the fake limiter? Does it eventually override and just continue driving on?

Nope it doesn’t. Just sits there, at least as long as I've bothered to entertain it. It introduces some required skill, which is fun just like driving a manual requires (a lot more) skill. As said before, to me it's my EV equivalent of a "sequential gearbox" which I lusted for in the GRY. Of course not really the same, but in driving terms, kinda.

A lot of tesla people are grossly underestimating the performance of the 5 N, wrongly comparing it to a Model 3 Performance (much smaller), thinking some better brakes and lighter weight will beat it everywhere. And that a Plaid with ceramics is in a different league altogether.

Material for some comparison, the 5 N did Pikes peak this year. The 5 N with the same driver, Pobst, did the same time up Pikes peak, both fully racecar modified but with stock drivetrain and cooling, Similar weight, plaid 350hp more and more aerodynamic shape and being more expensive didn't help the Plaid. Even a model S is still significantly more cramped than the 5 N in the rear cabin.

Model 3 fully modified (slick tires, brakes, suspension, aftermarket cooling, full cf bodywork, spoilers the whole shabang) did 11:06 in 2022, while a STOCK 5N on street(!) tyres (Yokohama V107) did a certified out of event 10:33 this year. However weather was bad for the Tesla losing roughly a minute, it should also be a minute faster being full racecar.

Tesla clearly isn't better...
