GR86 GR86 - What wheels and tyres are you thinking about?

5 spoke?

Too low for UK roads and my taste visually too if I’m honest but other than that it works well and Rega’s/spoon SW388 have always played well with JDM cars imo.

I was looking at Desmond before i found the Braids. They look great but didn't have sizing I was looking for.

What size are you after? Have you had a chat with @DesmondWheelsEU ?

EDIT: Those Braids are more expensive than Regamasters and RPF1s. In fact you could own a set of RPF1s and Regamasters for the price of Forged Fives, they are dear.

I've realised that I have a thing for 5 spoke wheels. I quite fancy some of these braid forged 5s now in 17x9 offset somewhere around et45 - they size them to order.

There are some well priced tyres in 245/40/17 sizing which have a similar outer diameter.
I like the idea of having a decent sized side wall for progressive feeling and ride quality while pressing on around the lake district where I live. Having seen the fitment of some cars on RPF1 in this wheel and tyre size i really fancy it. I much prefer the 5 spoke look though.
I'm not sure if i dare ask for a price on them. Partly for fear of how much they'll be and partly because I think I'll end up ordering them... 👹

Think I'd go for a bright silver or white as my car is very black at the moment.

Apparently this size is very tight on the standard suspension struts, so to avoid clearance issues + looking like a monster truck I might have to go for some coilovers at the same time. I haven't researched coilovers yet, but I wouldnt be doing a crazy drop as id like to keep decent ride height, (aformentioned pressing-on reasons) and would like to retain a moderate spring rate. Then there's the requires camber arms, bla bla bla, Where's the magic money tree?

Here's the fitmentView attachment 25205:
All of those stats and there is no weight listed.
Wheel manufacturer claim using forged or flowform tech and then don't list the weight is either laziness or they know they don't stand against other lightweight wheels

No not yet. I won't be looking to purchase until I've worn through the tyres on the stock wheels, then I'll use the stock wheels, with all seasons, or rain focussed tyres in winter.

I'm just thinking out loud right now really. I won't be rushing into anything just yet, but I'd like to make up my mind by the time I'm ready for a tyre change.

Weight is a big thing for me in the justification of buying new wheels. They have to be a good bit lighter than stock but still forged and strong.
Likewise. Or at least I'd like to keep the weight the same while gaining a bit more contact patch. In my younger years I bought a couple of sets of heavy alloys, which looked nice but ruined dynamics.

Just let me know when you’re ready for a chat.

I'm now of a tendency to agree with you there. All of the replacement wheels I've looked at so far have been either the same or heavier than stock. So I've sent an email to my local stockist enquiring about a set of Bola FLE 8x18 in Hyper Black, which are flow forged and weigh ~9.3Kg. Not a lot of difference I know but, the price is quite decent for a full set at around £860 before tyre options etc.

I'm still spending far too much time looking at different wheel / tyre / suspension offerings.

I'd love a set of Regamasters but I can't see myself being able to stretch to that budget

I came across these Kansei KNP wheels recently and think they might be the ones i go for. They have a great looking 5-spoke design and have the same/similar construction process as flow-forming, although they call it "Formlite". They're a relatively new company but reviews seem good from what I've been able to find.

They are available In 18x8.5. The only offset is ET35 which from what I can see is about as wide as you can go without silly amounts of -ve camber. The fitment can be seen here on S15RSG's car although I'll be looking at fitting 235/40/18 tyres for a bit more compliency.

I did quite fancy a 245 tyre on a 9J but at et35 I think i'll be asking for trouble. Any thoughts on this?

Now I need to make my mind up on suspesnion, but I'm already leaning towards the Bilsteins he has fitted. I REALLY don't want a crashy ride and the hike in spring-rate offered by most coilovers puts me off.

I've been dropping hints to my wife over the past few months such as, "I'm going to change the wheels because there will be more tyre options - It's almost like a long term investment." so i might pull the trigger soon.

How many people have gone down to 17" wheels? I'm considering doing so mainly to improve the ride a smidge, but also for aesthetics as well.

Have you got any photos of the car on 17s? It's obviously personal taste, but most would think it looks better on 19s.

The ride comfort should improve with 17s, but the handling should be poorer. I'm not sure about road noise.

Why do you think handling woukld be poorer on 17s? Many track focused cars have smaller diameter wheels.

Only from googling “GR86 17 inch wheels” haha! I’m not sure I’d see enough of a drop in handling performance for me to notice. Car isn’t going to be tracked any time soon and I’d favour more tyre sidewall/comfort than initial turn in performance anyway.

Tests on 17s, 18s and 19s often favour 19s for handling (depending on size of the sidewall, but with our sizes) and 17s for comfort, with 18s a good balance for the road. But as Dela says, whether you'd notice much for general driving I'm not sure.
