GR86 GR86 Delivery Tracking and Collection thread

I spoke to Toyota online today, my silver GR86 ordered 3rd July '23 is apparently on the Georgia Highway expected to arrive at Portbury 19th September.

Starting to get excited now, I bought a model GR86 to check I still like the styling - I still don't think it looks quite as good as my Z4 (which will be sold soon). It does do the Japanese sports-car look very well though. Looking forward to my first non French or German car.

I've been round the loop of should I/shouldn't I over the last few days. Even went as far as planning how to do UK to Lisbon road trips in an electric car, then looked at electric car depreciation and that's a good enough justification to get the GR86 for me!

Does anyone know of any good/trustworthy detailers who can do ceramic coating in the Worthing/Shoreham/Brighton area?
I was dead set on another EV after driving a BMW I3s for a couple of years .. then I had a chat to my son who mentioned Tesla residuals dropping massively.. That and the shocking infrastructure in the NW and North Wales made the GR86 an easy decision 😉

Not long now!

Mine may be on the same boat, I’ll call online on Monday and check.

When did you get the “Left the factory” notification?

New car detail with a coating should be around £500, but maybe a bit more as your down south.
Front end PPF around £1200

My White Manual should have just got moored at Portbury this afternoon on the "Miraculous Ace". So thought I'd stop by and say hi.

Invitation 22nd June, ordered 25th June, build in progress 1st July, welcome call 11th July, left the factory 13th July.

Was in the middle of a mortgage application when they went on sale last year so I sadly chose to be sensible and watched them sell out in front of me.

I also own a 2003 WRX STi and a 1997 Mk2 MR2, so I'm hoping the GR is a nice blend of my two favourite cars.

Took my 95 MR2 on a long drive today and its very very similar to the 86 (slightly slower obviously 😉)

That sounds good to me!

My one reservation with the GR is the power. I know it won't be as quick as the STi (running 330hp) but I'm willing to sacrifice some shove if it's as fun to drive as the MR2.

Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to test drive so I'm going in completely blind.

Still heard nothing on a order placed at the end of July, stuck at 'order processing', should give TOL a call?

One thing I noticed on the spec list is the blind spot monitor / rear cross traffic monitor isn't on the standard equipment list. Does anyone know if they have removed this on this latest batch of cars?

I heard that the latest cars don’t have it.. Did you see the order spec in the source code on the order page? I don’t seem to be able to see that on my Mac..

It's nothing like the power of an old STi. I loved my Scoob. This is indeed very different.

Just looking at the attachments in my emails from Toyota.

You won't be disappointed, coming from someone who's had 500bhp cars.

I think someone will be disappointed if they're after that thrill you get when you put your foot down, and get thrown back. Particularly with 4 wheel drive cars, where you can get the power down early out of corners and just laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. If however, you're after the feeling of control through and out of corners, with a bit of sideways action if you want it - as well as a lovely looking sportscar - then this fits the bill.

Of course there are some who find it's not for them, and sell-up. No car is the perfect choice for everyone.

Two possible problems with that though:

1. Such easy performance can get boring quite quickly. It's superficial, effortless, and repetitive. The GR86, like the GT86 before it (and other more modestly powered cars, particularly older ones) take time, effort, persistence and skill to get the best out of. The tactile, organic pleasures are available more of the time.

2. There's very limited opportunity to use some of these high powered instant ready mix performance cars without landing yourself in trouble. Plus other road users will think you are a dick. Just think of all those RS3s and Golf Rs and A45 AMGs tearing around lane swapping on motorways or racing through city centres popping their ridiculous exhausts on an otherwise pleasant summer's evening. Everyone thinks they are dicks. Even they think they are dicks.

These simple principles apply when considering GT86s and MX5s. What the GR86 brings is (just?) sufficient power and performance to enhance the experience even further.

Totally agree with you. I've had reasonably high powered 4 wheel drive cars over the past 25 years - last of the MK1 Impreza turbos, Audi TTS, and recently a Yaris GR4 that I've just swapped for a GR86. All the 4wd cars a great hoot powering out of corners and getting fast off the line but like you say, becomes an old trick after a while and the grin slowly fades. More importantly it becomes obvious that the road holding/cornering has very little to do with the driver and is just demonstrating the prowess of the 4wd software. Personally much preferred my MX5, Z4 3.0Si (widowmaker - that really kept you on your toes) and now the 86 as much more driver involvement, subtly and skill required to get the best out of them.

The Yaris was a hoot on track and gripped unbelieveably, but if it was overcooked into a corner it was simply a case of point the front wheels where you want to go and floor it and the software sorted it for you (even with all the driver aids off) highly impressive but not really my kind of driving, much more fun driving the old 115bhp MX5 round the same track - power isn't everything 😉
