GR86 GR86 Confessions

Mine feels better than the GT86 I owned, but I will probably still swap a better quality transmission fluid at some point.

Here goes... I've yet to really gel will the 86, Im a long way off falling in love with it, I hoped to have been smitten but its not happened yet (1800 miles/5 months)... I havent done a proper cross country blast like Wales or similar which might be what I need to bond properly. I cant put my finger on it (though I do hate the throttle mapping but I've asked Toyota to look at this next week), just something not adding up yet 😣

Hope this changes as the test drive I did in the demo car I loved and didnt want to take it back, at the moment Im not fussed with mine :cry:

I understand how you feel. We sold our MX5 for the 86 partly because I thought our Dog might fit in the back & we could use the car more.
But its hopeless messing around with the seats to get her in the back. Its so much easier taking the FK8.
I don't think Toyota will help with the Throttle mapping, I have tried! I have bought a Pedal Commander which helps a little & some people who have changed the Clutch spring say that helps, things you shouldn't need to do with a new car!
So no we haven't yet bonded with the car either. My Wife would sell it tomorrow for another MX5!

With an FK8 at your disposal it has a high bar to live up to, one of the all time great drivers cars. Ive not driven an MX5 since 1998 which was a first gen I think, it still sticks in my mind to this day as a great drive, especially the gear change and feel of the steering.

Pedal commander is next thing to consider. Feels they've engineered responsiveness by making the throttle too sensitive and all in the first inch of travel, nothing much happens in the last 20%.

What would you say the issue is with gear change? I’m still less than 1000 miles but it feels pretty good so far. Now and then there’s a little snick from 1st to 2nd when driving really slowly and changing up at low rpm. But otherwise I’d say it was a pretty slick change.
Did the change start of nice and get poor over time?

Yeah it felt smooth to start. Changing gear can randomly feel crunchy, like the clutch isn't fully disengaged when going in to the gear.
 
I've havent driven mine that much and I had a GT86 for 3 years before this but I am still unsure how much I like it, I know its built to a cost but the drivers door rattles like crazy when `I have music on and its not that loud and the door mirrors also vibrate a lot. It rattles from the A pillar somewhere as well. The clutch catches me out now and again when moving around slowly in traffic or low speeds.I think once its run in it will give me a better understanding of it.
It gets lots of attention as its a good looking car and had someone film me the other day and someone was looking around at it as I walked up but jumped in their car and drove off as I arrived back, they must have been shy..

Sorry to hear that. Appreciate your car history, it’s a car of compromises. I must admit in isolation I’m less invested than my previous toy but I love it every time I drive it. At 1100 miles and expecting the love to grow as I have more memorable adventures.

Hiya, have a word with Toyota about those rattles, I've got the same, it goes in next week for a 2k mile oil change, (The car was built May 22 so its 12 month old oil and gives me peace of mind rather than wait for Jan 24), rear parking sensors, ducktail, front mudflaps and snagging list including:
Driver door speaker / grill / card vibrates at higher volume badly
Driver A pillar creak where the air bag is
Driver dash near air vent rattle on bumps
Knocking from behind passenger seat
Check throttle
Open both doors on fob
Recall according to the gov site I believe might be DCM looking through this website, though not had any comms from Toyota on this.

Overall I think the interior is pretty decent for the price, love the Ultrasuede, seats, leather steering wheel and even quite like the materials used around the central dash, very pleased it has buttons and not touch screen for everything.

Despite what seems like moaning, Im determined to love it one day, its everything Ive been looking for for years, manual, small, coupe with a N/A engine and good looks without paying 50k for a Porsche, I just want to understand and feel what the magazine's have felt especially ECOTY and when it was deemed better than an Alpine by Dickie Meaden...
 
We also have a 2012 Fiat 500, 2 cylinder, at the moment and I confess to choosing it for my short commute recently. It uses half the fuel, doesn't mind where it's parked and sounds way better than the GR (sort of). In all other respects it's a bit crap.
 
I really don't like the sound of the engine. It's the only thing I'm struggling with really.

Listened to all the exhaust clips and still not convinced any make it sound good... Just better than the naff stock sound 🤐

Yup. Tend to agree. I've got the HKS and it sounds better, but given the price, it's still not amazing. It's mainly just amplified and deepend the sound. If you want to make it sound radically different, then I think you'd need to change the manifold.
