GR86 GR86 - Brake Upgrade Guide

I'd like to double check, if I want to take mine on a track day and I have some MX72+'s on the original (under 10k mile) disks this should be fine? I'm no racing driver and it'll be my first real track day (probably at Brands Hatch).
Has anyone got an instructor to go with them before? is it worth it? I feel like I'm a competent driver but there's a difference between competent and driving near the limit (whilst also avoid it and binning the car).

If the discs are not worn to min thickness then you’ll be fine. Consider changing fluid too to something like RBF 660. Those pads will be more than good enough. If the car is stock then consider adding some front camber if you can, your tyres will thank you.

If there’s an instructor available (usually free for a short session) definitely go for it.

Main thing on the day is to keep an eye on tyre pressures, keep sessions short and make sure you have a proper cool down lap.

I have been looking at alternative solutions to the standard Toyota discs and pads. Ideally discs with better protection against the elements, given that mine require replacement after less than 12,000 miles.

The feedback from @911sse on the Brembo xtra setup is pretty appealing. The only thing that worries me is that drilled discs aren't as strong.

I was browsing on Fensport's website and they have grooved discs from DBA and MTec. DBA have good reviews but quite pricey at almost £450 for a full set (before choosing pads}. MTec are priced more affordabley but I was immediately put off by their Google reviews.

While checking out the godspeed big brake kits, I noticed that they offer grooved discs for standard calipers.

At £280 for four discs it looks quite appealing.

When shopping on eBay, I came across the following discs:

The business buys genuine brembo plain discs then machines in grooves and dimples. £370 for four discs and standard brembo pads.

I am considering either the godspeed or machined brembo discs. For pads, I like the sound of the brembo xtra pads, or ebc yellow stuff pads. The car is only used on the road.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience or feedback with these suggestions?

Went with Brembo extras also, they are dimpled not drilled, with their pads, one stop shop and very happy for road driving, especially when the rain comes down.

That’s good to hear, I was planning to go with this option but haven’t had the time unfortunately so it will likely be next year now.

Hope the pics help, the front pads are xtra version so red backed the rears are their standard ones as didn’t have the option of xtra. The coating on the non contact area of the discs is a nice touch and it is also on the top of the discs too.
As you can see dimpled not drilled. IIRC Brembo determine if they should be dimpled or drilled depending on car etc.
