GR86 GR86 - Auto Fold Mirror Kit

Anyone purchased the Ali Express version. Goes for £38 quid each. Looks exactly the same as the mod society. Save about 25 quid total. Good deal or nay?

I saw that but preferred to pay a bit more and buy the MS one.
Think for me it was because I didn’t know how Ali Express deal with faulty parts. Mod Society you actually have a known company to deal with.
Im happy with the quality of the MS parts and loom.

Could someone with the Mod Society module run a quick test to satisfy my curiosity?

1. Get in the car
2. Use the button to fold the mirrors in manually.
3. Lock the car.
4. Unlock the car.

I have the other Australian module, from Trac Electronics and it works fine apart from in this specific scenario...even if the button has been pressed to manually fold in the mirrors, they will still unfold on unlock. Meaning your button is out of sync until it's used again. Really, it should not override the button.

It's only a small annoyance, but I did have cause to park in a really tight car park the other day, trying to get as close to the wall as possible. Usually I'd fold the mirrors in and unfold them manually once out of the space, but I was aware that if I did this and they unfolded when I unlocked the car, the mirror would end up scraping the wall.

I bought. Doesn't work.

Just tried it - they will still unfold when you open the door (rather than just unlock it), they'll then fold again when you either start it or turn on to accessory - as the button is still depressed.

Not sure if that helps?

Yup. Sounds almost identical to mine, except the mirrors unfold on unlock, rather than opening the door...then re-fold as per the button status when the ignition comes on.

So it seems like both modules have the same flaw. Really, if the button in the car is depressed, then the mirrors should stay folded no matter what the lock/unlock status is.

If I recall, I think the instructions of the Trac module said there is a loop of wire that you can cut and it will change the behaviour, so that the mirrors only unfold once the ignition is turned on, rather than just unlocking the car. I would guess that would fix this flaw, because if the ignition is on, then the status of the button would take precedent and the mirrors would stay folded.

But personally, I really like having the mirrors fold out on unlock. If nothing else, it's a good way to spot that I have forgotten to lock the car up. I'll just have to take care not to park anywhere where the mirrors would hit anything while folded.

My mirrors have stopped unfolding with the Mod Society mod I'm having to unfold them manually by hand.

If I fold them out manually and press the buttom on the door it folds them in (they make a banging sound before moving) , but pressing it again wont unfold them.

Possibly a problem with the motors in the mirror housing? But it's strange it's both mirrors.

if it were me, I’d remove the module before taking it to the dealer for any sort of investigation into the motor/warranty fix,

I've just taken the door card off to have a look and the Mod Society box has water in it and some corrosion on the connectors . I had it in the same location of wilster888 photos in post 110. 🤷‍♂️

Mirror switch works fine without it fitted.

Any idea of how the water got in? Any water marks on the door card or the clear plastic? In the position you fixed it was on the inner part of the door. Do you think the water followed the wiring down to the unit?

No idea, no water marks anywhere. The wiring was taped to the outside of the plastic sheet.

I’m stating the obvious here but there really shouldn’t be any water there - could get in the speakers too. Has the plastic membrane been compromised at all? Also, how long has the mod been fitted for?

Plastic membrane is fine. Fitted it late December last year.

It could be but would need the right conditions. Is the car garaged?

No.

No.
Oh right - so hasn’t lasted long at all. Have you noticed any excessive moisture on the inside of the windows on cold nights?

Nope, I've never had any moisture on the inside of the windows.
It’s a strange one then. Could be down to just really cheap metal/components in the mod I guess (making it susceptible to rusting quick). The water is a mystery though - definitely getting in somehow). Be interesting to see how others mods hold up. Mines only been in about a month 🙄

I’m very tempted to pop the door card off and have a look at mine. I’d rather catch any ingress now before either the module or the car itself gets damaged.

Does anyone have any suggestions to stop ingress? Current thought is insulating tape to try to create a weatherproof “boot” from the cable, over the connector, and to the module. Will likely look a bit of a mess but I guess it doesn’t really matter.

You will always get some moisture in the door card (hence the vapour barrier) but it shouldn't be excessive. I would get a roll of self amalgamating tape and mummify the module and connector.
