GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

Word. For similar reasons HUD doesn't work for me either, it takes longer time for my eyes to 'autofocus' back and forth as it strains my eyes to to look at the HUD, and therefore loses the whole purpose of showing it up on the screen. On top of that it can be distracting when trying to read the road. It's worse at night too. Better to develop ones peripheral driving vision while quickly glancing at analog instruments...

(I'm old too ;) )
Setting the analog gauges at dim dark during night driving is fighter pilot stuff - very convenient for eyes 👌

In 1945 maybe but when I started they looked like this.

Re the car manufactured price I recently read that a ship with approx 3750 assorted new Bentley, Lambos and Porsches was a total loss after an electric Porsche caught fire in 2022 and destroyed everything including the ship. The insurance claim is after 150m not sure if $ or urines. If you do the math that values each car as around 40k without factoring the ship. That is presumably the manufactured cost and includes having to restart a manufacturing line for the Lambos which were last of line.

I see the Japanese shipping company is taking Porsche to court, this is serious.

It sounds obvious, but I like that analogue dials physically move. This is partly why I like mechanical watches and would never bother with an Apple Watch.

That’s a great analogy.

I feel the same. I’ve always worn a mechanical watch and always will. It's a timeless piece for me. I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing an Apple Watch, even though I use an iPhone.

It seems like people fall into two camps: those who are old school and love mechanical devices, often because they grew up in the '80s, and those who constantly upgrade to the latest iPhone every year because they need the newest tech and check social media every hour. I imagine the latter group prefers the digital layout of the MK2.

I despise the tech in modern cars. There was something special about the simplicity of having three pedals, a steering wheel, and the action of shifting gears. Watching analog dials on the dashboard move feels incredibly organic and satisfying.

I'm right there with you. I can't stand digital dashboards like the ones in the new BMWs and other cars. They look so tacky. I mean, the retro digital dash look on the MK2 isn't as bad as some others, but it's still digital and it just doesn't have the feel of classic analog gauges.

One of the main reasons I went for the MK1 was because of its analog gauges, believe it or not. The simpler, the better. They look perfect to me and remind me so much of the B5 RS4 gauges. The best thing about analog gauges is they never look outdated or old. They age really well, while digital dashboards quickly look old-fashioned, even the ones trying to look "retro" with a square design.

Something no one talks about is how much easier on the eyes analog gauges are. That's never going to change. Digital gauges, no matter how much anti-glare coating they have, are always more distracting and worse for your eyes, whether they're LCD or LED.

The only upside of digital gauges is that they can be customized to show different screens, making them easier to read on the track, but that hardly matters since 99.9% of the time, these cars are driven on regular roads.

IMO, analog gauges = timeless
…or I’m just old :D

Agree 100 %. Analog is my preference too. When I first saw the MK1 interior, I was relieved to see those good old red needles ! Digital Gauges can be interesting in some applications, but it doesn't work for sporty cars.
I'm probably getting old, but that doesn't mean has-been !

Shift lights are definitely handy, and likely make changing gear at the right tight slightly easier.

But when I'm having fun, I don't really want my GR to do too much of the work for me. Timing your shifts using an analogue needle is a skill—mastering it is part of the fun, IMO. It makes driving much more rewarding.
I hardly don't even look at the tacho anymore, I "hear" when I have to shift. As far as I remember, I've always driven that way... Maybe because I'm old. 😉

Sadly you own a car which doesn't make enough sound to hear it (if exhaust is stock) :P If you disable the "sound enhancer", you hardly hear the engine in the cabin.
You can shift by listening when you're just on the road (even B-roads). But when you are on track and want the best laptime, shifting lights will be much more accurate.

It's not sad at all ! :giggle:
I do agree with you that at least one programmable shiftlight on track is a must to systematically shift @ the correct RPM, due to air displacement noise, exhaust screaming, earplugs & helmet, especially in an open car, thus making it difficult to hear the engine. But in the GRY, OEM exhaust, sound enhancer, I don't feel the need at all.
I do drive "by ear" but to be on the safe side to avoid over-revving, I have a dongle plugged into the OBD-2 bought from MagnusT here (https://www.gr-zoo.com/threads/mis-shift-over-rev-warning-beeper-for-sale.221/), which you can set to beep at any given RPM. Perfect for B-Road fun, and keeping your eyes on the road. Works for track days as well ofcourse.
I don't use the GRY on track though, (just tested it once & to complete the running-in, and will take the opportunity of a heavy rainy day to have some fun on the wet).
Otherwise, I have a specific track car built for the purpose, and exclusively used on track (MK Indy RR). But that's not the subject here.

Well look what we have here, another GRMN?

After looking at these photos, I'm thinking that maybe my white GRY 2024 shouldn't be so ugly, after all...
The open-mouth-zombie effect is less evident than I thought.
Or maybe I just should immediately order the aftermarket lower splitter for the front bumper... 😬
