GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

Personally, I've no issue reaching any of the controls in the MK1 while sitting back in my seat with a helmet on (I'm on lowering brackets).
Smaller people in full harness apparently had trouble reaching all controls. The ergonomic standard that got us the, for some, too high seating position in the first place.

Time for a European manufacturer to build us a 4WD manual petrol homologation special adapted to suit taller drivers ...
Oh wait, there is no manufacturer left who would do that :(

By what I see from the youtube video I guess it's pretty clear the RC variant won't come to Europe, and then I must sadly forget about my dream of having a vertical handbrake in my future car...
If you check the right side of the steering wheel, the RC is missing all the buttons for excluding (ar activating) cruise control and for the much-hated ISA, so I guess all that mandatory ADAS systems (much-hated as well, by myself at least) are missing from that car.
As far as I know, it's a Japan-only variant that it's mainly used by WRC rally drivers for tests and recce, being very like a light-weight competition-ready car.

You can always import one and use it for occasional recce and track fun. And kiss the ISA and other BS goodbye

Early last week Toyota Europe has communicated prices to the most part of the European countries. We should receive further prices for other countries pretty soon.

March for the UK if the comms pack sent to UK dealers is to be believed.

That would really be a tempting thing to do... :D
I can't stand even only the idea of having ISA on my car, most of all here in Italy where speed limits are set to ridiculous low figures, just to put the whole responsibility always and only on the driver. And where you can encounter tons of speed changes in a matter of a few meters... just insane

I know about France, but what are the other European countries that had got their prices, as far as you know?

Btw, anytime I find myself staring at the WRC plate on my GRYs Mk1, many doubts start flooding my mind about moving to the Mk2.
What if the Mk1 really is the last actual homologation special of our times?
No WRC plate on the Mk2, as far as I see from the official interior photos, am I wrong?

Buy a car because you want it and it’s fun not because of some cheap badge stuck on it.

Of course, but sorry, it's not just a cheap badge, it means it's the only homologation special car built in ages, and very likely the last one to be sold for who knows how long.
I want both and I'm sure both are fun.
Not an easy choice, at least to me.

Well, the WRC (Rally1) never materialised, but it did now in the Rally2 and that feels great tbh. But probably at some point they will probably be changed to the 2024 optics?

In the end what I theoretical miss most is the stiffer body of the mk2, just because that theoretically is always better. But I write theoretically because I really can't complain about body stiffness for the driving I do. And I've driven some wobbly cars in the past and this one is just fine.... Would I be able to notice the difference with the mk2? Maybe. Would it matter? Not really, I haven't bothered to brace the chassi either, because I know end of day it's very incremental improvements. I've spent a lot of time and money improving previous cars that were significantly less stiff, but even there it was incremental and I should have spent that energy improving the driver and enjoying the driving with hindsight.

Same goes for badge/no badge. It really doesn't matter, and if it does to you personally - you wanna be able to point at it for passengers, a great conversation starter, nobody will hold it against you if you stick one on yourself. Just as we have thread here of folks making badges with chassi numbering. Because the car, at large, mk1 or mk2, is the same and developed for the same goal.

And if you find a bloke that shakes their head upon seeing it, shake their hand on being totally hardcore, they deserve a badge on their forehead ;)

well technically it did. one of the unicorns is in Jyskä TGR WRT factory. The others (two?) location is unknown, would guess Japan.
According Tom Fowler it would have swept the field had it raced 2021.

This all falls more to the category what you feel is important, not what it is.
I've been pondering if it would make any sense to delimit GR - in reality it makes no sense but it would feel nice to have top speed of +270km/h - for a Yaris. Those small things make it feel more special every time you drive it. ;)

Indeed they did materialise literally, but they never raced and thus needed the homologation, which is something immaterial lol. That is, untill Rally2.

Yes I believe the launch was postponed due to covid or some other mess due to covid. Maybe Fia just played it safe and wanted to freeze development for a moment. Who knows, but it is a nice another rally story. I believe it was ment to be introduced in a rally (New Zealand?) that got cancelled due to Covid. But do not really know detail of the events how they went (Fia or Toyota etc)

For visuals The Unicorn is here in the profile picture :) 👋

If the MK2 was substantially different to the Mk1 in terms of design, functionality or aesthetic I could have some sympthathy for the "mk2 isn't homologation therefore isn't special" argument... but the reality is that's not the case.

Everything about the Mk2 seems to be an evolution or improvement over the Mk1, essentially what we used to see as Subaru delivered their first WRX then improved through the STi range year on year, or what Mitsubishi did with the OG Galant VR-4 which then became the Lancer Evolution, again improved year on year.

In my view the homologation specialness is being built upon, not diluted, and if Toyota are true to their word about the GRY becoming a "normal" model, then we'll probably see further evolutions over time.

For me the biggest thing on my mind is price. I hope it remains under £40k in the UK but we can only wait and see on that.
