GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

I swear, if I ever bought a GRMN (which I still plan on), the very first thing I'd do is slap some sense into it by painting that black, riced-out carbon bonnet to match the body color. Enough with the tacky designs already!

Ok, rant over :D
GRMN is actually the only other model than the MK1 I'm interested in, in terms of looks. I even like the bonnet.

That said, I get the feeling the cars they are selling now are more track focused than rally focused. Even the GRMN suffers for that.

Confusing statement

1. They’re selling road cars to the public, who use them on tarmac

2. The cars being sold can’t be said to be that unlike rally cars in tarmac spec

Yep, most owners (excluding those from Scandinavia) would likely have a meltdown if their car even drives near a bit of dirt or a stone.

In Oz outside the major cities little choice unless you stay on the main roads. Mine does maybe 15% gravel road. I love it even if I have pushed the suspension to be tarmac focussed. The V107 daily duty tyres are awful on gravel, no grip but the AD08R are decent so track tyre swap for serious dirt work. I would love to have some fun on a beach but clean up afterwards would be a nightmare.

It's not really confusing, and there is a lot of difference between track setup, and road.

The GR Yaris was hand fettled by Tommi Makinen himself in Finland. Obviously it was run on tracks as well, but the point is the components are now being changed away from what is designed for a good ride across dodgy terrain, to being hyper focused on smooth tarmac, which I'll tell you is far from common anywhere in the UK right now.

The newer cars are edging towards track day toys. It's fine, they'll probably sell more cars that way but I do wonder if the suspension changes might make them much less compliant on the B road.

I'm essentially saying it's the same thing that James May was complaining about years ago with 'developed at the Nurburgring'. I don't fully agree with his sentiment there that all cars run there are ruined, but it's not too surprising a hyper track focused car might struggle with conditions that don't match up with where the majority of its testing occurred.

I agree it looks cool but have tou seen the maintainence schedule for it. Great xhoice if you have a butler. Other than the lairey spoiler they're mostly just different split settings. Could some tuner not provide me with a "donut" launch button in the glovebox?
I was watching a YouTube video of MPS Engineering doing some testing on a costumer GR Yaris and indeed there is a AWD control module from Syvecs

Even gives you burnout mode if you really need something like that but it's not something you can just plug-in and be done with it.

The GRY is not a rally car and is not suitable for rally use—none of it. It’s a rally-inspired road car made for the road. Mixing a road car with track use never works out well in the end because too many compromises have to be made. I'd prefer the GRY to be aimed towards road compliance and not circuit use (or gravel or tarmac or whatever).

We live in a world full of racecar driver wannabes who think cars like the GRY or Civic Type R should run circles around a track without affecting the brakes, tires, and cooling. That’s unrealistic and borderline impossible. Even a GT3 RS pushed hard enough around a circuit will eventually experience brake fade and other issues. Let’s keep our expectations grounded in reality.

Found a cool piece online this morning about GR Production. Loads of photos of MK2 GR Yaris being built and the current production line (Yaris and Corolla on the same production line).

Very interesting read. Thanks 👌

You're right, it hasn't gotten a cage and many other attributes. But you're also wrong. Car was developed 50% tarmac and 50% off road, and even completely stock with a proper driver it would show its heels to a lot of lower division pure bred rally cars in tarmac and light gravel rallies.

There was German TV program that ran a stock car with a rally driver down a rallycross dirt track on PS4S an it's laptime was competitive with awd rallycross Polos and Fabias...

Many years ago when a round of the wrc was held in Western Oz you could get crazy access to drivers during a service stage in a little hole called Collie. I was talking to the late greats Colin MacCrae and possum Bourne about the wrx's. Mostly I had no idea what Colin said but possum said something that really struck home. He could take a stock wrx and against his wrc car it would be (say) 35 seconds slower than his wrc car on a stage. Swap the engine and it would gain 5 seconds, swap the suspension and that was another 5 seconds, add the stiffening and cage etc and that would be another couple of seconds. But take that stock car and bolt on the hand cut mud and snows and it would be close enough that a single mistake in the wrc car would see it come second. Oh and on a transport stage I was doing the legal 100 kph and Colin passed me at at great rate of knots. The pea gravel off his tyres smashed all four headlights and the fogs. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for weeks.

I hadn’t appreciated that the MkII had a body coloured rear spoiler.

Also, I would definitely choose that grey if going for one, might be boring but think it looks fantastic.

I'm glad Mk1 does not have body colour rear spoiler, prefer quite bit more the black one.

btw that diff cooler in one of the pics above is HUGE. I have now radiator envy as thought my oil cooler is largest on the planet. :ROFLMAO:

Yeah, it destroys the line of the roof...

But this silver/grey colour is epic on this Car👍🏻.
