GR86 First oil change (poll)

When will you carry out the first oil change in your GR86?

Some oil gets absorbed into the new oil filter after a few miles driving, so that would account for some.

Also it says check the oil, a couple of minutes after switching off on level ground, and use the lowest reading, as I think the dipstick sits at a slight angle in the sump.

Just wonder if the head drainback is just a lot slower on the Boxer engines compared to inline and V engines

Maybe the Toyota tech haven't left enough time for the real reading? It was at max and more even when I got home and waited 5 minutes before reading

Had a super weird coversation with the dealer. Supplied 5L of oil and they kept saying 5.8L is needed. Somehow 5L is only on the minimal line?

This is the third time I have changed my oil + filter, and have always found that 5L for oil + filter change is enough as stated on the user manual

I dunno have they been drinking my engine oil for fun or something. Or Toyota have sent a note to overfill by 0.8L...

The dealer is correct - I changed my oil at 1000 miles and it took just shy of 6 litres to reach the maximum mark on the dipstick.

I have changed my oil multiple times already in my GR86. Due to the boxer design it literally takes hours for the oil to drip down from the heads. I can confirm that it takes more than 5.3L when you really let the oil drain for hour at least.

I also can say that it is extremely difficult and near impossible to get a 100% clear reading. I can recommend to check your oil dead cold (opposite to what the manual says), on a level surface. Even a rock under your tire will ruin the reading lol.

Wipe the dip stick and leave the dip stick in the tube hanging for few minutes, do not push it all the way in to allow the oil drip down to the pan from the tube. After few minutes push the dipstick slowly all the way in and pull out. Check both sided, the side with the lower reading, which is the side facing rear of the car is the correct reading.

Also with the oil starvation issue I treat the max line on the dipstick as “time to add more oil” mark lol. I usually run 0.3L to 0.5L above the max line to keep my mind sane. No visible frothing as far as I can tell.

I changed the oil myself at 1600 miles, after reading many online posts saying 5 litres.
5.0 Litres barely filled it to the minimum mark and leaving plenty of time for it to drain into the sump didn't change that.
Luckily I had bought another litre for top ups, it ended up with another 0.6/0.7 litres to bring it closer to the max mark.
Concerned by this, I later found info saying 5.5 litres for oil and filter change, but can't find it now.

Starting off at the minimum after an oil change isn't a good idea, it will only go down from there.
Next time I'll know I NEED to get 6 litres and only have a small amount left. (y)
I checked the oil level today, cold, it had been stood for a few weeks.
The dipstick level was around 5mm above the max mark, the litre bottle for tops still had 0.5 L, it had actually been filled with 5.5 Litres.
So it seems 5.0 Litres is correct and it needs a very long time to drain into the sump.

You live and learn, 5.0 in future and add more if needed.
Having read about people overfilling for track use, I'll not be removing the excess this time.
Also good to know the engine needs to have been stopped at least 1hr to get a reliable reading. **When touring check the oil in the morning before starting, not after driving to the fuel station**

Just called up my local Toyota garage about a 1000 mile oil change, and they put me on hold for 10 mins and came back and said they don't recommend doing that, and that they've never heard about changing oil at 1000 miles in the GR86 lol. Even after I insisted it's fine, happy to have my oil change early - they basically fobbed me off and said they don't do services this early. Any material or advice I can point to that will get them to budge?

Yeah, go to an independent garage.

Seriously, don't even bother trying, the level of service and care you get is likely to be better if you go elsewhere. Toyota have no interest in car enthusiasts or anything other than the domestic appliances they sell. If you want more detail or to venture off piste they dont have the time for it.

100% what the 2 previous posters said. Toyota sell school run cars and shopping carts and they probably have a hard time chasing customers to bring their car in on time for a service. If it's not on the menu of items on their computer how are they supposed to book it in, computer says no. If you can DIY it or leave it, it won't affect the warranty and the engine won't seize if you don't change the oil.

First vote for 10000 miles DIY 😅

I had signed up for the service plan, but when it came to book the first service decided it wasn't worth it.. Cancelled the plan and ordered some Millers EE 0W20 & a filter. Drained 4.7L with the front jacked up and refilled with 5L to the top of the dipstick. Air filter, brakes, tires, etc are all good, nothing to do there. Going to follow the shorter intervals from the service manual from now on, so I'm not worried about the ~0.5L of break in oil left in there.

On checking oil levels, the service manual has this to say:
As the oil level gauge is used for daily inspection, standard of “F” line and “L” line of the oil level gauge is set for the condition that engine is cold.

I did mine last night, 110miles. At Snetterton next weekend so thought Fresh oil would be beneficial.

I can confirm "stuff" came out, there were lumps in the previously clean oil pan, I've not looked further to confirm what it is yet. Terrible picture for reference!

One question, I'm doubting myself... Typically Toyota oil filters all come with a plastic wrapper over the business end, and a gasket that is pre lubed for easy install/sealing.

As such when doing the Hilux I never "pre lube" the filter gasket. On my other cars I use k&N filters, I need to put a bit of oil on there as they arrive "dry".

Last night when doing the GR86 I pulled off the wrapper and installed and can't remember if I checked if it was pre lubed or not... Can anyone confirm if it is or isn't?

Genuine Toyota boxed, Subaru filter from Fensport.

The ones I've had from Subaru were dry.

Yup,

Looks like it's a case of RTFM... Or not even that as it's on the bloody filter itself...

I'm was rushing because the Mrs was nagging at me to mend the vacuum, that ceased to function due to the teenager pulling the retractable lead out like he's trying to start the thing...

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Will reseat and relube appropriately later, then wallow in shame for lack of attention to detail.

Just done over 8000 miles on ours and noticing oil consumption is high  (its making its way to the min level far quicker than any other vehicle I've ever had) Would have liked to have done the change after the break in period but as its a daily & don't WFH very often, trying to get it organised isn't straightforward..
Have emailed a Subaru specialist to quote for an oil and filter change.. Not too keen on sending any more business to my most local Toyota main dealer
(Would fail to organise a p*ss up in brewery levels of organisation)

Think you want to be topping up your oil asap though
