When will you carry out the first oil change in your GR86?

On the contrary, that's a bit of a sweeping statement, swap to it if it suits your use profile. 0w20 is perfectly suitable.
of course if you park your car outside in freezing temps and your car serves as a daily driver with low RPM short drives, then sure. 20 weight oil is probably fine.

But most of us (I hope) drive the car harder than your usual daily driver and do not see extreme cold.

Mine was in for the first service. It had around 12000km.
When I picked it up, I noticed they filled it with 5w30 Oil.
Since the standard oil supposed to be 0w20, I asked why they used the other.
After consulting the workshop manager, he told me it was an official instruction from Toyota to use 5w30 because there were "accidents" with 0w20.
So "what kind of 'accidents'" i asked.
He replied "you know accidents because of the oil...."
Well I raised my eyebrow and left it at that.

Did anyone heard something similar? Or did they just filled the 5w30 accidentally and made up the story about an official instruction.

That makes me feel a little better that I did an oil change after break in. I waya beginning to think I had been overcautious.
Ditto! Think I’ll be supplying my own Millers branded stuff when it goes into the dealership, too.

I am at 3000 miles and did my 3rd engine oil change. I experienced oil consumption around 0.5 L per 1000 miles consistently, which is expected on 20 weight oil during hard driving.

I sent out used engine oils for analysis.

1st oil - factory 0W-20 , 1000 miles, under 4k RPM break in method - The oil was straight garbage, the oil didn't meet 0W-20 univeral requirements and showed high wear levels.

2nd oil - Ravenol SFE 5W-20 , 600 miles, hard driving - The oil was in good condition but the sample showed higher wear level than the factory oil. (Probably due to the hard driving and break-in not completed just yet).

3rd oil - Ravenol SFE 5W-20, 1250 miles, hard driving - Awaiting used oil analysis results, will update later. However just from the visual POV, the oil looked clean.

4th oil - Motul 5W-30 - my latest oil change. I will monitor behaviour and send a sample for analysis probably next year as I won't drive much in the winter.

If you use this car as it was intended, I strongly recommend to run 5W-30 even in the winter, unless you live in the arctic circle or Siberia.

BTW I also did my Trans (MT) and Diff oil at 3k miles.

Trans oil was fine and the drain plug showed minimal debris. However depending on the oil used, the oil can affect the shift feel, so you might consider that to make your shifts smoother.

Diff oil was another story. The oil was pitch black and smelled nasty, the drain plug had large amount of debris. Definitely worth the change IMO.

Note that my 86 serves as a second fun car and majority of my miles are hard fun miles.
The analysis for my last sample just came in.

3rd oil - Ravenol SFE 5W-20, 1250 miles, hard driving - Wear elements are slightly lower than in the previous sample, which is nice to see, because this sample saw 2 track days and double the miles. However, the wear level is still very high overall. The guy who did the analysis strongly recommended to go with 5W-30.

As for my 4th oil, the Motul 5W30... I won't drive much in the winter, so I won't have any analysis done until like May - June the earliest I think.

Well come on then how was it, the suspense is killing me.
Lol.

We'll the oil change was a simple straight forward affair. Job done.

However...

The dealer took it upon themselves to 'clean' my car. As happened during pdi prep they scratched the soft rear light plastic in doing so. So now my detailer has to weave his magic and sort this. Very annoyed. And spent 30 minutes complaining with the service manager.

And to add to my shitty day, I picked up my first windscreen chip driving home!!

This was the second attempt at the oil change. First attempt the parts didn't arrive 🤦 so I had to rebook.

Joy 🤬

This is the Subaru oil filter matching the part nr of the one currently in the car:

Replying to a very old post so apologies in advance! I've not changed oils on previous cars myself but wanting to look after the GR a lot more than those work horses so looking to change the oil more frequently and carry out those changes myself between dealer services.

It looks straightforward enough - I'm just wonder is the sump washer that comes with this filter also suitable? Or do I need to order a different one separately - can anyone with a bit more experience advise? Thanks 😁

That looks to be the right washer, same as Levorg / FB engines. When I bought the filter from the subaru dealer, I needed to purchase the washer separately, pt no 803916010

Gutted.

I think from the dealer experiences I've read about and experienced so far I'm going to have a specialist work on my car, probably means forfeiting the warranty.

probably means forfeiting the warranty.

Not for the first 3 years, under block exemption regs you can have any VAT registered garage perform the service if using genuine parts or parts that meet OEM spec. Toyota now circumnavigate some of it under their new 10 year warranty, to qualify for the remaining 7 years your car would need to go to a Toyota dealership, but not consecutively from what I understand.

My GT86 and GR86 only ever go to specialists because of similar experiences with dealerships.

It’s definitely leaving me wondering the best course of action with the GR given the incompetence of most main dealers. Having to argue that they were wrong about the service interval of a previous car when booking it in for starters isn’t great. I’ve also suffered a 50 grit sponge wash down leaving the previously immaculate car needing a full paint correction to remove a lot of deep swirls.

Equally though the same car I had a similarly terrible experience with a well regarded specialist. They didn’t wash it but they did make a mess of a cambelt and auxiliary belt change. It was wasn’t done correctly, they damaged parts of the car and left front bumper looms disconnected. I only discovered the looms weren’t plugged in months later due to the fog lights not working. By which point the open connectors being exposed to a winter of salted roads and the pins had corroded completely leaving me to have to replace the plug connectors and re-pin the ends of the looms. 🤬

Ah fair enough, I knew about the block regs but I've never dared put them into practice. Most of my servicing over the last 15 years of driving has been dealer based although its always left a sour taste. I've had my cars damaged (bumper scratched) although had to really make sure they didnt wash the car.

Always reminded me of going to the dentist. Expensive and I didnt want to go and didnt enjoy it and wish I never went.

Your location says Surrey, I would take it to Abbey Motorsports, they have a lot of experience with the old car, they also work on the Yaris, highly recommended. Those guys have serviced mine and conscripts car recently.

Thanks thats who I had in mind actually.

Car detailed today. All sorted. Back to gleaming paintwork and no scratches on black plastics ❤️

Had a super weird coversation with the dealer. Supplied 5L of oil and they kept saying 5.8L is needed. Somehow 5L is only on the minimal line?

This is the third time I have changed my oil + filter, and have always found that 5L for oil + filter change is enough as stated on the user manual

I dunno have they been drinking my engine oil for fun or something. Or Toyota have sent a note to overfill by 0.8L...

I am taking mine on the 5th but not supplying anything so will report back for how much they charged me

I changed the oil myself at 1600 miles, after reading many online posts saying 5 litres.
5.0 Litres barely filled it to the minimum mark and leaving plenty of time for it to drain into the sump didn't change that.
Luckily I had bought another litre for top ups, it ended up with another 0.6/0.7 litres to bring it closer to the max mark.
Concerned by this, I later found info saying 5.5 litres for oil and filter change, but can't find it now.

Starting off at the minimum after an oil change isn't a good idea, it will only go down from there.
Next time I'll know I NEED to get 6 litres and only have a small amount left. (y)
