Has anyone that’s done an early change seen any visible signs of metal in the oil or filter? Or sent the oil for analysis?

Will be doing its second oil change and its first gearbox & diff oil very soon at 5500 miles!
For the gear oils, is that short interval just for the first one and then you'll leave it in for years / standard? I'd be interested to see how it looks.

First oil change done at 980 miles. I cut the filter open to take a look and aside from a few specs of what looked like RTV, there was also a few bits of green stuff. I'm not sure what it is, but it seems to be relatively common. I didn't see anything in the oil, although I didn't check it too thoroughly.

I changed the oil & filter on my GR86 at 1,003 miles yesterday. I used my borescope inside the sump - no evidence of excessive RTV sealant anywhere, and there looks to be quite a thin spread in between the sump to block join.

Did you manage to get the borescope up in the pickup?

I think if there were excessive RTV used that could cause an issue, you’d see evidence of it being squished out between the joint either side.

Just booked mine if for an oil change Service. Mileage will be at 1300 ish by then. My dealer said not necessary, due at 10k. But happy to do it on request. £142 oil and filter change.
Don't know if this is overkill but I'm not mechanically minded so I'm urging on safer side. The Forum seems divided on necessity 🤷🏼

Usually the Muricans are the ones shouting and preaching early oil changes..
On another forum one guy specifically (some will undoubtedly know who I'm talking about :p) takes it personally if you don't change oil every couple 1000 miles.

I do wonder why Toyota US and EU suggest such different intervals.

US: twice a year or every 3-5000 miles

UK/EU:
once a year, or every 10K miles (15K km)

That's double the oil changes...

Maybe they use good old US of A mineral oil. Does it mention about going for a 'tune up'

I think historically the engines and the oil was very low tech and wouldn't last, but the habit of doing it often has not changed despite technology moving on. The words "conventional oil" in the above quote is strange, as Toyota spec is synthetic. The full wording is "Synthetic oil ordinarily should be changed each 7,500 - 10,000 miles. Toyota suggests getting your 2022 Toyota GR86 oil & filter changed each 3,000-5,000 miles for conventional oil. " -

I havent changed the oil in my own car for a while, but I think I'm going to start doing it again with the GR86. Including one around the 1k miles.

Can anyone offer any advise on how doing my own oil & genuine filter changes would affect my warranty etc. Is it best to write it in the service book or just keep receipts?

Thanks.

A receipt from at least a VAT registered garage, using OEM parts/fluids would be required to keep warranty. The dealers don't really like that though, so might battle if that is your only service history and try to raise a warranty claim.
You'd be Ok doing your own 'between' regular service intervals though.

Fit an OEM filter and nobody will ever know that the oil has been changed... For peace of mind fit a new copper / crush washer and torque the sump plug (filter too if you are worried about over tightening it and can be bothered to buy a filter socket)

Just ordered 5 litres of Miller's EE performance 0w-20 from Opie oils for £42.49.
It meets the requirements e.g. API SP and ILSAC GF-6A.
I found a lot of the Toyota 0w-20 online is only ILSAC GF-5, and not API SP.

I am at 3000 miles and did my 3rd engine oil change. I experienced oil consumption around 0.5 L per 1000 miles consistently, which is expected on 20 weight oil during hard driving.

I sent out used engine oils for analysis.

1st oil - factory 0W-20 , 1000 miles, under 4k RPM break in method - The oil was straight garbage, the oil didn't meet 0W-20 univeral requirements and showed high wear levels.

2nd oil - Ravenol SFE 5W-20 , 600 miles, hard driving - The oil was in good condition but the sample showed higher wear level than the factory oil. (Probably due to the hard driving and break-in not completed just yet).

3rd oil - Ravenol SFE 5W-20, 1250 miles, hard driving - Awaiting used oil analysis results, will update later. However just from the visual POV, the oil looked clean.

4th oil - Motul 5W-30 - my latest oil change. I will monitor behaviour and send a sample for analysis probably next year as I won't drive much in the winter.

If you use this car as it was intended, I strongly recommend to run 5W-30 even in the winter, unless you live in the arctic circle or Siberia.

BTW I also did my Trans (MT) and Diff oil at 3k miles.

Trans oil was fine and the drain plug showed minimal debris. However depending on the oil used, the oil can affect the shift feel, so you might consider that to make your shifts smoother.

Diff oil was another story. The oil was pitch black and smelled nasty, the drain plug had large amount of debris. Definitely worth the change IMO.

Note that my 86 serves as a second fun car and majority of my miles are hard fun miles.

Very insightful! Thanks for taking the time to post. Interesting the factory fill oil wasn’t very good…

On the contrary, that's a bit of a sweeping statement, swap to it if it suits your use profile. 0w20 is perfectly suitable.
