GR86 Duckbill or not?

Thanks all - appreciate much useful and prompt suggestions!
Will go ahead with the spoiler fitting tomorrow.. and share pics once installed.
 
I installed before collection so never saw it without, I was in two minds about it, but understood (possibly incorrectly) that fitting by the dealer before collection made it easier from an insurance point of view.

I'm still in two minds about to be honest.

I had similar confusion and checked re this with my dealer - he confirmed that that doesn't make any difference. As per him, anything that doesn't come fitted from the factory is still considered as modification from insurance point of view, irrespective of who fits it. (Under the circumstances, it was in his favour to say otherwise).
 
Got mines fitted this week, I think it look greats and you can see it in the rear view mirror when driving (could be handy for parking? lol)

Mine just came back from the dealer fitted with spoiler. Its dark enough outside, to be able to see the spoiler properly ((esp. for Magnetite color).. this is going to be a long night for me :D

I checked this specifically with LV and their response was that a modification was something not added by the manufacturer. In the context of this discussion they said that having the spoiler and rear parking sensors fitted by the dealer before collection didn’t constitute a modification. £100 less on the insurance as a result.

I guess it must be different from insurer to insurer. Back in the day, it used to be fairly lenient and you could get away with most things and he insurance only cared if it added over 10% to the power output. Now, most companies want to know any changes from the original specification, this includes any optional extras or dealer fit accessories.
 
How do we call this type of spoiler duckbill platypus or duck tail?:eek:
 
Update - So glad I went with the spoiler. It looked good before (which made me wonder if I needed the spoiler), but as others have said - the spoiler 'completes the car'. I think duckbill is an absolute must for this car.
@TigerJim - I think the spoiler makes the car look even better from the rear compared to the side-front view in real life, as opposed to photos.

Apart from the cosmetics, does the duck tail make any difference to the driving experience, maybe extra downforce? windnoise?

It's a spoiler stuck on another spoiler! Wasn't for me at all...... The line of the car is spot on already. Personally I think it looks tacky but of course that's my view and others may love it.

I decided that I’d prefer to spend the spoiler money on a personalised registration.. I’ve never had one before but may make an exception for the GR

Here in North Wales (I’m exiled here) they seem to be the norm

I think it's just for looks, as for road noise very very unlikely to make any difference, I can't hear anything from the back end.
 
I'm sure I can feel the 0.24% increased downforce at 98.36mph. 😛

Just looks I'm sure like the aero cover, personal taste I think the car looks pants without it, and it's official not some tacky add on from AliExpress.

Apparently it makes a small difference to fuel economy as well, slightly less drag. Seem to remember that from one of the US forums. I love the look of it and generally hate spoilers and wings. After seeing the US cars with it I didn’t really have a choice.
 
Yeah I think the spoiler really suits the car so ordered mine from my supplying dealer about 6 months ago so it’d be fitted on delivery.
Had the car for over 2 months now and dealer still ‘trying their best’ to find a slot to get it fitted…
It’s almost like they don’t care 😐

Not at road speeds. I'd guess that at very top speeds it'd have a small effect on reducing lift. Drag is trickier - at low speeds it might increase it a touch (and probably why it's never fitted prior to registration for this reason in the UK) but if you could go fast enough to cause airflow to separate over the back window then it'll actually help reduce drag by preventing separation. We need an enthusiast to stick small bits of string on the back of the car and film them to check! Doubt there'd be any increase in noise either on road or track - too far back to be heard from the cabin.

It looks a simple job for DIY, if you just go down the 3M tape fixing route. Youtube has several videos on using masking tape to ensure correct positioning. There's also one video (for a BRZ) here that shows how the bolt carriers on the Duckbill are actually held in place with 3M tape anyway! So drilling the tailgate could just be a needless exercise in panel damage by the dealership...
 
You don't have to drill but when I fitted mine in the depths of Winter I wasn't taking any chances of it failing. Didn't trust the dealer so did it myself. It's not too difficult but was nerve wracking at the time.
