GR86 Disable engine noises through car speaker - yes or no

Engine sounds through car speaker - 3 options:

  • Keep the engine sounds through the speaker, it's better than no engine sounds

    Votes: 25 26.6%

  • Disable the fake engine sounds, I'd rather change the exhaust to get authentic engine noises

    Votes: 32 34.0%

  • Disable the fake engine sounds, I'd rather have a quiet engine than fake sounds

I'm just going to disconnect mine myself if it bugs me...
 
For me I’ll be turning it off. I’m not a fan, the way it sounds isn’t pleasing to my ears. I mean, it’s not the worst out there. I’ve experienced one that has been unplugged and I find it quieter, but it sounds more pleasing at higher revs. I’ll maybe consider a Remark axle-back to add a bit more authentic noise.
 
I'm hoping that the service department of my dealer can do it, they didn't sound sure but I sent them the thread on here, so fingers crossed.

Either that or I'll just unplug it myself.

The benefit of just unplugging it is that you can simply plug it back in again if you want as opposed to having to take it to the dealer to be re-programmed.
 
Still running in, so haven't been above 4k revs much to hear it. When I can rev it out after 1k miles I'll form an opinion.
I tend to like keeping my cars standard, it's how the designers intended, but I'll see how it goes.
Unplugging is the way to go,.it's so easy, why pay for coding.

Mine was pretty noticeable even below 4k (I'm still only at 500 miles) - there's essentially no engine noise at all without the ASC.
If you have a laptop you can pick up an OBD adapter for a few quid and use TechStream - that gives you the opportunity to change settings whenever you like. For example I turned the auto lights sensitivity down but found it was still too sensitive, so I was able to to turn it down some more at the weekend.
 
I disconnected mine back in April I think, but since then I've soundproofed the car and fitted the Focal speakers. That's made the car almost too quiet now. (for a sporty car says the OH - she was wanting me to get a different exhaust!)

So last weekend I put the artificial noise back on and I think I sounds better than it did through the better speakers? OH is happy as it "sounds more like it should". Cheaper than an exhaust anyway!

Doesn't the fake noise come out of a dedicated speaker in the dash?

Correct. It is this box:

I can also say with confidence that the sound generator does not use the speakers of the audio system. The company who upgraded my audio system did a lot of measurements and this box above is the only source of the fake sound.
 
Disconnected my sound generator after the first motorway journey of note.. The droning was tedious.. I now have to hope that the droning is gone and what I heard wasn’t the tyres 😬

Very simple process.. I did wonder whether I should protect the cable end and the sound unit connector as they are no longer connected together but I guess they are out of harm’s way behind the glove box…
 
I haven’t been over 4000 rpm and have put all noise down to tyres and weight saving lack of sound deadening rather than fake sound. Thought it only kicked in at higher revs?

Unfortunately they are pretty noisy, there isn't much sound deadening and the Michelin tyres are quite noisy.
I use mine on the motorway a fair bit and it is noisier than my previous Seat Leon.
I think I remember you had a Jag E or F pace, it will be way noisier than one of those unfortunately.
It's not a luxury coupe, it's almost a track car, so it is noisy.
Maybe sound deadening and different tyres could help.

It's throttle position mostly, just gets even louder at higher revs. Floor it from lower revs and it sounds more farty. There's a happy medium at around 3.5k rpm and about 60% throttle where it actually produces what's IMHO a fairly nice sound - any more throttle and it's raucously obnoxious, and more revs.. will have to wait until run-in is over :p If the aim of the game was to discourage full throttle applications then it works for me sadly..
 
It's the engine noise equivalent of a fleshlight. It lasted less than a week.

Hi, have you got to 1k yet to test the noise?
