Hopefully it'll be.Same, really disappointing news, and worrying from such a low milage car. Hope it gets sorted soon. Hopefully it's a cut and shut warranty case...any modifications on the car?
Yes, level was at the max dot, like it's been done the service at 1000 mi at the end of run-inHope you get this sorted . Indeed sounds like bottom end.
The fact that you checked the oil just the day before, and it was at max line (if I've read that right), worries me. A few similar posts on the gr86.org group had a more hazy view on their oil level prior to failure.
Fingers crossed dealers sort this no issue![]()
Any update on the cause and the solution? Will Toyota replace the engine for you under warranty?Yes, level was at the max dot, like it's been done the service at 1000 mi at the end of run-in
I agree. Surely can't be down to low oil this time though! Is it at a GR centre just out of interest?
Based on what you've said, examples on GR86.org and from the old gen I reckon you've spun a rod bearing. That means material circulation around the engine, worn journals and a scored crank. New engine time.

After it happened, I wonder, did you check the oil level?A bit of an update, progressing by wee tiny baby steps.
Called the dealership on Wednesday morning to ask for an update on the courtesy car. Still none, but after I said it was quite poor and I was losing my car from work as a favour on Thursday evening, they said they'd look at getting one of their courtesy cars as soon as possible before Toyota GB approves a hire car.
Got a call at 17:45 today saying they have a car and to get myself there before 18:00 to get it... Which was impossible so I'll pick it up at work tomorrow.
During that phone call, I got an update on the technical side. One spun crankshaft bearing apparently but Toyota GB wants them to "open up the other cylinders" before deciding if they replace the broken shells etc or get a new block to rebuild. Not filling me with conviction it's gonna be the new engine I want but a half-arsed rebuilt i won't have confidence in.
Later on Wednesday afternoon, got a phone call to ask "questions that are not tricky but just to understand the problem" about if I had accessories on the engine, the proportion of high engine speed running, the motorway vs. city driving, how long I drove with the engine making a noise, reminding me that "the computer records everything in the car". It smelled a lot like fishing for ammunition for ways to void the warranty but maybe I'm too paranoid.
The guy said "obviously it's covered by warranty" but I have a feeling its just their opinion and Toyota GB hasn't confirmed it.
Me neither: it's a sports car so of course I'll have spent time above 6000 rpm, there's another 1000 rpm before the rev limiter...I don't really see why they are asking. I wouldn't expect the warranty to be denied depending on how the car was being driven, unless you managed to money shift, ymor you spent hours bouncing off the limiter...in which case the ECU would tell them.

Because they want to know the circumstances it failed under. Without knowing that, they can't link cases and potentially fix a lot of ticking time bomb.I don't really see why they are asking.
