GR86 Broken

Ohh that sucks. Sorry to hear this.
I am sure Toyota will sort you out, hopefully you get del details of what occurred and why it is not going to happen again after its been fixed

Hope you get this sorted . Indeed sounds like bottom end.

The fact that you checked the oil just the day before, and it was at max line (if I've read that right), worries me. A few similar posts on the gr86.org group had a more hazy view on their oil level prior to failure.
Fingers crossed dealers sort this no issue 🤞

Thank you all for the good wishes.

Called the dealership early morning, they discovered the issue "oh, that blue car that got dropped over the weekend?". Told they would look at the issue hopefully in the day and couldn't sort out any courtesy car as it's "last minute" (sorry, next time I'll book my big end destruction in advance...).

Got a call back in the afternoon that went a bit earlier. It's making "quite a a bit of a knock" (you don't say). Toyota has asked them to pull the engine out and open it to investigate. Still at loose ends regarding courtesy car, I can't say they were particularly helpful but they'll talk to Toyota to get something sorted in the next couple of days.

I managed to blag a cat from work as a favour but that can't go on forever.
I guess, in summary, the investigation steps are what I'd expected. The customer service has room for improvement...

Same, really disappointing news, and worrying from such a low milage car. Hope it gets sorted soon. Hopefully it's a cut and shut warranty case...any modifications on the car?
Hopefully it'll be.

Mods are only cosmetic (carbon fibre spoiler and splitter, change of wheel colour) so I'm sure it'll affect the bottom end lubrication 😕

Yes, level was at the max dot, like it's been done the service at 1000 mi at the end of run-in

No update yet on that. "It make quite a knock" is what I had from Toyota Norwich and they've been instructed by Toyota GB to pull the engine out and inspect it.

It sounded so broken I can't imagine it can be repaired, so I'm hoping for a new engine under warranty. Engines don't tend to break after 9 months and 4500 mi.

No news on the courtesy car either, which is absolutely poor customer service...

Is it at a GR centre just out of interest?

Based on what you've said, examples on GR86.org and from the old gen I reckon you've spun a rod bearing. That means material circulation around the engine, worn journals and a scored crank. New engine time.

I agree. Surely can't be down to low oil this time though!

Yes, they're a GR centre.

I agree, that's what it sounds like but they're dragging their feet.

A bit of an update, progressing by wee tiny baby steps.

Called the dealership on Wednesday morning to ask for an update on the courtesy car. Still none, but after I said it was quite poor and I was losing my car from work as a favour on Thursday evening, they said they'd look at getting one of their courtesy cars as soon as possible before Toyota GB approves a hire car.
Got a call at 17:45 today saying they have a car and to get myself there before 18:00 to get it... Which was impossible so I'll pick it up at work tomorrow.

During that phone call, I got an update on the technical side. One spun crankshaft bearing apparently but Toyota GB wants them to "open up the other cylinders" before deciding if they replace the broken shells etc or get a new block to rebuild. Not filling me with conviction it's gonna be the new engine I want but a half-arsed rebuilt i won't have confidence in.

Later on Wednesday afternoon, got a phone call to ask "questions that are not tricky but just to understand the problem" about if I had accessories on the engine, the proportion of high engine speed running, the motorway vs. city driving, how long I drove with the engine making a noise, reminding me that "the computer records everything in the car". It smelled a lot like fishing for ammunition for ways to void the warranty but maybe I'm too paranoid.
The guy said "obviously it's covered by warranty" but I have a feeling its just their opinion and Toyota GB hasn't confirmed it.

I don't really see why they are asking. I wouldn't expect the warranty to be denied depending on how the car was being driven, unless you managed to money shift, ymor you spent hours bouncing off the limiter...in which case the ECU would tell them.

After it happened, I wonder, did you check the oil level?

Me neither: it's a sports car so of course I'll have spent time above 6000 rpm, there's another 1000 rpm before the rev limiter...

Maybe it's standard questions and I'm paranoid, but they were all questions about "have you been revving it and abusing it?"

I checked the day before and it was on the max dot.

I checked before the AA arrived and there was oil all over the dipstick. Engine bay was cleaned apart from a little oil from the crank breather... Nothing on undertray etc

Pleased your making progress & at least getting a courtesy car, fingers crossed it will get sorted for you.
Hopefully it’s a one off and we are all not driving a ticking time bomb.

Because they want to know the circumstances it failed under. Without knowing that, they can't link cases and potentially fix a lot of ticking time bomb.

Just out of interest, had you changed the oil after the run in?
I’m just interested.

Sorry to hear this hope you get sorted, as you say it should 100% be covered by warranty, these cars are meant to be driven.
