It's part of the whole "it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow" sort of thing.

You have to put the effort in to get the best out of them and you're not breaking any speed limits doing it.

A Grom at 60 is a lot more fun than a Gixxer thou at 90

I understand that bit. Close to 30 years ago I swapped in my ZX9R for a KLE500. The salesman didn't understand at all.
I only sold my AR125 a couple of years ago.
The Grom is a physically small bike though - an evolution of the pit bike (which I never understood either). Minimotos, I get - just not midget bikes on the road.

Here’s a some of my back catalogue! Mainly Ducatis, best bike I ever had was a 996R back in 2001, a big regret letting it go. Had the 1098 for 10 years, other than servicing had no problems with any of them. Fabulous bikes. Got the Panigale V4s in April 2018, way too fast for the road, so off it went and in came the Yaris
