GR86 Best induction kit for airflow?

I found one of Kevin Vo's videos where he's changing headlights and includes bumper removal. It looks straightforward, but if I had a quid for every time I'd said that before ending up spending hours on something, then I probably wouldn't be driving a Toyota.
Yep. Bought a few bits for mine, thinking this won't take long to fit then find I'm 2 days in and I have to admit defeat and it goes in the pile I'll fit when it goes to a garage

Given that I might have to be doing it soon, do you have any how to videos you followed? It's the bit I'm dreading the most, so I always feel better if I go in knowing what needs to be done.
Personally I found the best bet is to forget the washers are there, let them ping off into a bush when the bumper comes off, swear, worry you've broke something, then refit and test to find all is fine.

Worked for me 🤷‍♂️

Yeah that was me too!!!

Then when I put them back on and tested them, I discovered I had put one back on the wrong way up, so it was spraying the ground. They have little arrows on the back to help stupid people like me who don't look!!

Good news: new intake is out for delivery today.
Bad news: it won't be here until at least 6pm, so I might not get time to fit it tonight...and it's raining tomorrow :/

Infinity intake is now installed...

First impressions are great. Some notes:

Quality & Installation
Quality is fantastic. Really well made and designed piece of kit, and incredibly light. Installation was a bit of a pain; but to caveat that, a lot of it was my fault. The package arrived yesterday evening. I already had the bumper off and the old intake out in readiness, and I wanted to get the new one fitted so the car wasn't sitting without a bumper all night and it would be ready for a morning drive. I figured that fitting should be fairly straightforward, and generally it was, but a couple of things caught me out and there was no instructions supplied. It wouldn't usually be an issue, but I was rushing a bit, so got a bit frustrated.

Also, removing the bumper - not a huge deal, removing it wasn't a problem really. But getting it back on was a bit of a pain. But again, by this time it was dark and I was tired. And I still didn't get it quite right - a couple of tabs under the front weren't seated correctly first time, so I had to unclip one side again this morning and sort that out. Luckily that didn't take long though, and the bumper is now back on and looking fine.

So as long as you give yourself plenty of time and daylight, no real big issues with the install. I should have held off until today rather than succumbing to excitement.

Sound
Glorious. It's similar to the K&N in that you need to be up in the revs and have the throttle wide open to get the most out of it. So day to day, it probably wont sound any different, but will reward when you rev it out. And gives a nice little bark if you blip on a down change. I don't think it's quite as loud as the K&N, but it sounds a bit smoother to my ears.

Driveability
Infinity claim +10-12bhp / 5-10lb-ft. I can't verify that, but unlike the K&N where I could swear it felt like I'd lost a bit of oomph, the Infinity feels the opposite; if anything it feels like the engine has a little more urgency low down. Haven't properly managed to exercise it yet though, as this morning the roads were absolutely sodden, so I had to take it easy.

Also, I have the feeling that throttle response is smoother, and that this intake has gone along way to helping iron out the jerky acceleration from low revs. I'll need to drive it more to be sure, so I won't say for definite. But if it has, that helps justify the cost a lot. As always though, have to be careful of placebo effects. But I'm really happy with how it drives.

Videos
I did manage to film some videos from this morning's drive and they didn't really come out well. Recorded on my phone mounted in a vent holder, windows were down a bit so you get a lot of wind noise/tyre hiss, and the roads were soaking wet, so the full throttle you need to really hear the intake at it's best, wasn't always possible. I have uploaded them and will post the links, but don't expect much. I also don't have any editing software, so they are just the raw clips, not cut down to key moments or anything. I'll see if I can get some better clips in the coming days.

EDIT: Found myself some editing software, so I went out and recorded a few more clips, this time with the windows up to reduce wind noise. Unfortunately, it's still a bit muffled, but hopefully it gives you an idea.

Longer bit of B-road driving.

Short pull into NSL

Another longer B-road segment

Another short pull along a slip road (windows up). Also swearing at a middle lane moron. Parental advisory warning.

I liked the part with the middle lane moron 😂. The best way to make yourself feel better is to squirt them with the screen wash as you cut across their front. Although it's not as satisfying to do in the wet.

I think I heard some nice barks amongst all that. Thanks for the commitment to the cause!

Thanks @Conscript Sounds good. It seems less on/off than the K&N. Good to hear that you think it's less jerky from low revs.

Yes, I know what you mean by "on/off", that's what prompted me to think that perhaps it was revving smoother. The K&N would really highlight if you weren't smooth with the throttle as it would bark a little. Whereas I haven't heard that so much with the Infinity, making me think it's smoother overall. Like I said though, don't take that as gospel, I haven't driven it enough to confirm whether it's just in my head or not.

Sounds great @Conscript - I have fogotten what exhasut you have?

Was the filter element oiled?
HKS Hi Power Spec L2
Yes, it's an oiled filter, so should be serviceable.

Can't tell if the blip coming into the village 30 sign is coming from the intake, or exhaust?

Always difficult to relay the actual noise into videos as rarely comes out right but appreciate the efforts here, as it sounds decent even through a phone mic!

The bark you hear with the annotation on screen is from the intake as I blip the throttle...then just after, there's a little pop which comes from the exhaust.

And thanks, yes it's difficult to record sound properly. I'm actually wondering whether it might be worth buying a remote Bluetooth mic and placing it near the headrest, but I don't know how to guarantee getting one which is better quality than the phone's microphone.

I missed the new clip with it being an edit. It sounds a lot more 'enginey' than stock, even on a phone video. I like it.

Went out for a longer drive this morning, and it was dry so I was able to stretch the car's legs a little more. Definitely feels like Infinity's claims of a slight power increase are true. Nothing world changing but the car feels like it has a little more oomph in general and sounds great when the throttle opens.

Also, I don't want to tempt fate and claim definitively, but I am convinced that its hugely improved the jerky acceleration I was experiencing (or what I refer to as jerky acceleration, as I think there's still a bit of subjective debate about it). Think when rolling out of a junction in second gear then putting your foot down as you straighten up....in that sort of situation I'd always got a kind of stumble as the revs rose, which I think we've all put down to throttle mapping. I tried to provoke that kind of behaviour a few times today, and the car felt much smoother. Not to say that the throttle mapping still doesn't need improvement, but I didn't get that feeling like I was jerking the throttle, even with my foot held rock steady. I'll keep monitoring that to see if it's in my head, but so far I'm very happy with it.

Not sure if its just me driving like a clown because of the noise but 2 tanks in I've lost a couple of mpg and i’m sure I'm getting the occasional pop & bang

Those with the Infinity intake setup, do you find yourself full throttle everywhere to get any noise? I've got a very quiet cat back exhaust, and so when I disabled the Active Sound thing it was so quiet I immediately reactivated it.

What's part throttle like?

And right up top 7-7.5k at full chat, is it howling, or does general engine noise still take over?

Cheers

You do still have to get the throttle open quite wide to get noise from it, just pottering around town you wouldn't hear much difference. To be honest, I don't actually spend much time at full chat, most of my fun driving is done in the midrange, but I would say it's probably more audible up top where the catback sound tends to die off a bit.

What I like most about it is that you get a nice bark when you blip the throttle when downshifting.

I was thinking of picking up a Bluetooth microphone, hoping that even a cheap dedicated one might be better than the in-built one on my phone. If I do, I'll try and record a better video.
