Hi All,

I'm toying with the idea of an induction kit, I know it may not add much in HP, but I've always liked the sound and look in the engine bay.
Those who have dabbled in the dark art of induction kits, or maybe even had one on the original GT86, which one's would you recommend out of the 2 styles which seem to be available:

1. Right Angled Cone - One looks like a direct replacement for the filter panel so the cone sits lateral to the air flow so the airflow hits the cone as it comes in:

2. Straight cone - The second has the cone sitting straight ahead, so the air entry hits the inside of the airbox first before making a 90 degree turn to hit the cone filter in the middle.

Both don't change where the air comes in from the front bumper unlike the GruppeM which adds 2 channels of front air I believe, but which is way out of my budget.
Anyone had any experience of these appreciated?

Cheers.

Out of the two the MST, as it has more clearance should you need to fit an oil cooler. Performance should be fairly similar.

Stock intake with an air intake duct is probably the best option though.

And from experience, don't buy one with a filter that sits directly behind the bumper as its a pain to change the filter.

Lots of research went into induction kits on the previous generation. The general consensus was it's a waste of time, any performance gains came from leaning out the AFR due to moving the position of the MAF which upset the readings. When corrected the gains were roughly the same as a panel filter. Perrin and Grimmspeed were exceptions. I imagine this car will be no different.

I had a Grimmspeed intake on my old car which was arguably one of the best designed kit for that car. I sold it after a couple of months because I didn't like the sound. It's the not same as an inline 4. I'd be skeptical about spending your hard earned cash on an induction kit.

I really want an induction kit but couldn't bring myself to pay £350, have gone with a panel filter until the prices come down, its mostly about noise and looks for me anyway

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful.
Does anyone know whether the GT86 kits would fit? I presume not, but those are going for around £150 second hand which is more palatable cost.

Nope they won't fit, different design.

Any aftermarket options for just the air intake duct available yet for the GR86?

gruppe m do one that is a work of art, then again should be for £1400

Replacement Filters are £100 too! Blitz do an identical version of it.

Twice the airflow and looks great but too expensive :(

Anyone have experience with these? Makes me wonder what do those original parts do?
I believe those removed parts are resonators to improve air flow by dampening waves & evening out the flow in the induction system. Taking them off might change the noise more than the filter - looks easily reversible though. Interested to hear if anyone else has experience of it or even understands it, as it would be great to improve the noise without screwing something else up.
Probably, all else equal, the "best" induction kit is already installed from the factory.

Don't touch the induction!
Except the paper filter an and for US-cars remove the coal filter.

Everything there is designed to work together,
  • starting with the intakte tube, that generates high velocity intake flow
  • over the resonators, that remove air waves, that go into the wrong direction
  • to the intake bridge, that has the exact length, so that the cylinders charge their opposite cylinder

Any modification will break this fined tuned system and just reduce power (but may increase sound).

Fun fact: a German tuner (JP Perfomance) removed everything before the bridge for testing and got a non-deleteable error code, because the car was "thinking" he would cheat the emisions. He had to go to Toyota to fix this.

Many people in the US have changed the intake without mentioning error codes 🤔. Only reported issues generating CEL have been replacing the manifolds
