GR86 Best induction kit for airflow?

Not sure why it's in dollars, there website says they are UK based.

I can confirm it is a UK company. I met the owner at Bedford Trackday and he bought a GR86 for development. He is actually on the FB GR86 group.
 
One alternative that did show improvements on otherwise stock cars is the GR intake, tested by Charles V on GR forums. His findings were that this provided a health +15hp, but when paired with other mods, did not show substantial change.

I havent checked but is that a US based car? They come with some charcoal filter that sits in front of the airbox and ripping it out seems to provide a 10hp increase. So it maybe that.

I am not convinced we will see any real increases from any induction kits which is the case with most cars. Only engine I ever heard of responding so well to breathing mods was the Honda K20.

I dont know why US cars have that, UK cars dont have it. I did wonder if it was a way of matching power to the GPF riddled UK cars or something. We get the GPF, they get a charcoal filter.

I don't think it's that, because if I recall, the US cars make about 228hp and UK/EU cars make 235hp, even with a GPF. Removing the charcoal filter gives them back the ~7hp lost.

I guess its something to do with meeting strict Californian emissions rules, although I don't really understand how an extra filter in the intake does it...unless strangling the power a little puts it in a different emissions output band or something.

I think its to stop fuel vapour coming out of the intake when the car is parked. This seems like a totally pointless exercise to me as i imagine the amount of vapour is probably a fraction of a percent of the amount that is released while fueling up a car. Someone in the legislation department probably has a family member who manufactures charcoal filters.

The comparison is versus the oem intake with the diaper removed. He is doing a great and detailed work, with the normal flaws that cannot be controlled. Not sure this forum’s policy on that, if Ok I can add the link.

Can't see it being an issue, think a few of us are signed up in the US forums too, so go for it. I think I've seen the thread you're talking about, handy for people here to see it.

Gonna put some stick on placebo heat shield stickers at the bottom and then its going in the car!

The charcoal diaper didnt put up a fight. A firm yank and the plastic welded tabs slipped right off. No sharp instruments involved. Fingers intact.

Looks great, that filter panel looks to be 3 times the size of the OEM filter 😲
 
Had the K&N CAI fitted for just under a couple of months now, but I'm doing a bit of an experiment and have put the stock system back in place.

The K&N sounds fantastic, and drives no different when you rev it out. But I am sure that I could feel a bit of a lull in the midrange which wasn't there before. It's difficult to tell without a dyno, but it just feels like the car isn't quite so eager to pickup sometimes. This could be psychological, and caused by the fact that the intake now makes more noise which isn't always matched by the acceleration. But I began to think back to the data that HKS posted about their suction pipe which I discussed with @KobayashiMaru86 earlier in this thread (https://www.gr-zoo.com/threads/best-induction-kit-for-airflow.3125/post-105450) - they showed a graph noting that the removal of the extra chamber on the intake pipe does lead to a reduction of torque in the midrange. Perhaps that's what I'm feeling, as the K&N doesn't retain that chamber.

Also, when I swapped back to the OEM intake, I did so the other evening not long after I'd driven home from work, and I noticed that the interior of the K&N heat shield felt red-hot to the touch. Granted, it was a very hot day, after a drive, and I'd never felt the OEM intake in similar circumstances, but it did cross my mind that the construction of the K&N system does leave a lot to be desired.

No matter. I'm going to stick with the OEM box and see how it feels for a while, and if I miss the K&N intake noise more than I am worried about losing power, it's only 15 minutes work or so to switch it back. If not, I will sell it on if someone else is interested, with a bonus for any potential buyer being that they don't have to go through all the faff of fitting the heat wrap and seals themselves :D

Interesting to hear your thoughts. I have only done about a hundred local miles with the K&N fitted so not decided about it yet.
