GR86 Alignment

I changed the front camber by 16mm top bolts and maxed them out. The geo machine showed -1deg L and -2deg R. After like an hour they managed to get it -1.2deg on both sides. Hoped for -1.5, but that is life.
The big difference kinda suprised me. It seems like a good idea to do a proper alignment after the change and not just max it out at home and call it a day.

I also have the back side unbalanced. Company doing the alignment did not want to mess with it, since there is almost no way to change it without camber bolts for the back. But honestly I think they just did not want to spend time with it. Next time I will visit some other shop...
There is no factory adjustment for Camber at the rear. I think they were professional to leave it alone.

Ninjin's right. You need either adjustable upper or lower control arms on the rear to adjust the camber (apart from the changes you get with ride height adjustment). Lower control arms are easier to install so most people go with these.

Don't hold it against your alignment place for not rectifying the mismatch. There's nothing they could have done to change it.

Interesting thread, I have always thought my alignment felt "off" from day 1 and didn't feel confident with the car, I put it down to being winter and the PS4s being rubbish in the cold, - for some reason it didn't occur to me that a new car would come poorly aligned from the factory.

This leaves me with two questions...

  • Camber Bolts - they come as a pair are most people just fitting one bolt per side?
  • Does anyone know of a proper alignment shop that can be trusted near Henley / Reading?

If you don't mind driving an hour or so, the lads at my local are very good. Independent business and all are petrol heads. They do track days and drifting themselves.

Wheels in motion/black boots gets a lot of praise, I've had 4 cars there and never had an alignment where the steering wheel wasn't on the piss, but they drove well.

I'd not take a car anywhere except Abbey Motorsport now so long as they were willing to work on it, only place that someone actually drive my car to make sure it was perfect which it is.

Bolts come in pairs, I've got two pairs fitted to my fronts. Can't remember the exact figure I managed with 1 pair of bolts but if you sift through my mountain of shitposts here you'll find the figures.

Thanks!

I've heard Abbey are good, but they are bloody miles away. I gues I'd hope for a "while you wait appointment" daft question, do they have a waiting area where I could spin up a laptop and do some work?

Yeah, on a sofa sat in front of the chaps that are working. They are nice people. Worth the trip and the wait for sure.

Yeah, Scott's dog, he's sometimes in the office (or was the last time I was there), so you might have to fight him for room on the sofa :D

Booked in for an alignment check and adjustment at Guildford Toyota. Arrived and after 30 mins they say they dont have the GR86 on their system. Pretty weird for a GR centre to not have a car on their system after more than 2 years. Anyway I ask them if they can use the GT86 specs and they said it is not the same. Have anyone else had this issue? The car is tramlining a bit and I want the alignment checked and adjusted.

Drive to Oxted and get it done at Abbey Motorsport by people who know what they're doing.

Thanks mate. Will give them a go then!!!
You wont go wrong with them. Very knowledgeable with this platform, if you tell them what you want from the car or if you've got concerns about the way it drives, they will probably be able to point you in the right direction (hah! geddit? because wheel alignment? I'll see myself out.... )

Another Abbey supporter here, did my Yaris on their Hunters rig recently. Friendly, knowledgeable, let you look underneath, good tea and banter as well.

Haha. Classic. They are absolute doylums there.

And another Abbey Motorsport vote here. I'd not take my car anywhere else.

Bit of a joke when they could manually look up the alignment settings from the electronic workshop manual!
