GR86 1st Service

First service completed today. Cost £126 at an independent JDM specialist. I supplied the filter/washer. He took the time to point out many other ‘areas for improvement’; such as underbody preservation requirements, the lack of attention to detail wrt the caliper spraying (Skidz), wheel coatings issues (Ecosse Powder Coatings), rusty oil filter seal (Toyota) but, he also offered some good hints about engine bay preservation and where to put it etc. I got to go all around the car and underneath whilst on the ramp to take some photos.

That all sounds handy. I look forward to seeing the photos along with detailed guidelines.

First service booked at local garage tomorrow - well respected local place. They were a little hesitant, at first, with it being the first service, but I explained it was little more than a visual inspection and the oil & filter changed (I did buy a cabin filter to change too). Only an hours labour and I don't expect them to find anything untoward.

Oooh, look at you all 'la-di-da' with a great big haul of Toyota stuff! :giggle:

First service done at Snows Toyota Salisbury.
Great little no nonsense dealership . On my asking, they have adjusted headlight sensitivity to 20% less, switched off auto air circulation, setup windows down feature from remote. They have done the big one… enable keyless 2 door unlocking.
No issues with parts.
Service cost bit steep at £315, but well happy with service received.

Those going for the main dealer initial service, it's worth haggling . Two in my neck of the woods, Scarborough & Hull were prepared to do it for £295 instead of the listed £315. I believe £295 is the price if booked on line but the functionality wasn't working so they were prepared to do it at the lower figure.

Worth mentioning again that the Toyota owner’s club premium membership gets you money off if your dealership is part of the program.

Cardiff is and I got 15% off. Membership is £20 so paid for itself and a fair bit more!

Just had first oil change at 1300 miles. I bought the oil and filter.

What would be a fair price for someone to change the oil, and what would be a cheap price? I feel that I've been undercharged.

I paid £30 on my Civic, when I got my own oil and filter.

I’m less focused on the price (to a point) and more interested in the quality of service and workmanship. The very basics you’d hope for yet many garages fail to achieve are…

  • Filters fitted correctly, oil filter pre-filled or car cranked in “clear flood mode” to circulate oil before starting. Filter and sump ring tightened and torqued to spec with no leaks or anything over tightened.
  • Car not driven like a holiday rental car that’s been handed to a teenager when road tested.
  • Not treated to a gritty sponge valet when the service advisor has been instructed explicitly that the car is not to be washed.
  • Technicians boots not dragged across sideskirts and aperture trims. Same goes for tools, watches, belt buckles, buttons etc being banged on or dragged over wings and bumpers.
I appreciate it sounds full on OCD and I know it’s a £30k Toyota not a Ferrari. That said it boils my piss when you pay someone to do a job and they fail to achieve a standard of work you’d expect from a professional. It’s even more egregious when it’s something you could do yourself at home and are only visiting them to maintain the warranty cover.

Approaching its first birthday (1st March) not heard a thing from local dealer should I be surprised or worried? They have changed hands in the last year so dunno if that has anything to do with it.

Toyota ownership experience goes from bad to worse.

I heard nothing from mine (which is also a GR centre). Everything was initiated by me, made sure to book a month in advance to give them time to order the (apparently) elusive oil filter.

I was plagued, e-mail, text message(s) and phone calls. Didn't take it to them in the end!

Turns out the change of hands had caused the problem, Steven Eagell (new owner) had no record of my car, FFS! Don't offer discounts to Toyota Owners club members either and were very offish about offering any kind of inducement to me using them, pity they are the nearest to me, really want to take my custom elsewhere.

You don't have to use Toyota at all for the first few years (just a vat registered garage I think)

Yeah block exemption, but it would be nice to keep Toyota "stamps" all the way through and they way they have been with regard to customer service and their contempt for their customers (see the alarm issue) I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever that if it came to a warranty claim they would drag their feet, moan and put you right to the back of the queue to sort any issues without those Toyota stamps, they would have to fix it in the end but it would be a painful experience which they will do all they can to increase the pain.

1st Service today, had pre-warned them to check stock of oil filter when I booked it in 3 weeks ago. Turned up and they went to double check they had it before I left. All good.
They also listened to my instruction to not wash the car.
Only negative was they hadn't contacted me to book the car in and I have taken out a 3 year service plan.

Anyone have the Toyota Part number for the GR86 'Cabin Filter' please? The search function is not being my friend ...
