GR Yaris 👎 Negatives - what annoys, disappoints, puzzles and generally irks you about the GR Yaris?

Found the usual issues to start with like the mirror position and thought the seat was high. However I must say I am now used to both. I don’t give the mirror a second thought and actually find the seating position good now. Out for a B road blast today and go round a blind blend to find Pheasants casually crossing. Here we go I thought, new grill on the way, slamming on the breaks (no cars behind me) I used the horn for the first time. WFT! Absolutely no use what so ever. It was almost like the pheasant’s stopped and burst into laughter. How this horn can possibly be fit for purpose is beyond me. With all the safety kit on this cracking car I think Toyota missed a trick with this. It would however go perfectly well in Mr Beans mini 🤣.

Just a minor point of amusement/bafflement. The air con controls.

When the green LED for the right hand knob is on it means the ‘Auto’ function is on.

For the left hand knob the green LED is on when the ‘Dual’ function is off???!!!
When the left led isn't lit, the right knob controls a single temperature for both sides. When it's lit, there are two zones, left controlling left and right controlling right.

Yup - I take it as Dual light on = two zones; dual light off = single zone.

Wish I could have it on windscreen only through the normal direction selector rather than having to use the separate button then slow fans down...

I'm going to add the stop start.

I know a lot of people hate stop start and turn it off every time they get in to a car with it, but I have no objection to it in principle. I have it on my Skoda DSG and it's totally fine and unobtrusive.

The GRY is the first manual car I've had it on so my "new" problem might be something others have been aware of for years.

When I want to pull off, dip clutch, engage gear and start to apply the accelerator as the clutch pedal comes up and I release the handbrake. But the Yaris doesn't react quite quick enough, so the engine isn't quite up to speed so it stalls.

Muscle memory kicks in so I dip the clutch and hit the starter button to restart the engine, except because of the stop start the car still thinks it should be running and tries again to start the engine just as me hitting the button has actually turned the car off.

At which point I have to keep the clutch down and hit the button to restart the car again...

Typically this only happens when I'm at the front at the lights (not unusual in the Yaris) so I hold up a line of cars behind me. If I'm a few cars back, I react more slowly dipping the clutch and selecting the gear waiting for the car in front to move.

It's the tiniest of frustrations and something I have to learn (I currently disable start stop if I'm at the front of the queue), but the 5 seconds or so of messing about feels like a lifetime of embarrassment.

I turn it off every time I get in. I think it maybe related to the clutch bite point but I've stalled too many times using it. Not had such problems in Fords I've driven recently like the Puma ST where it works perfectly well with a manual powertrain.

i recognized lane center assist is rubish already on the test drive in summer. but in heavy rain it is annyoing. on a wide street it detects the ghost tracks from the car before you and tries to align on that, instead of the street markings.

Why aren't you disabling it every time you get in. I do that even before.y seatbelt is on.
A Feature or function that's in a car should work as intended. If you like it keep it on, if you don't switch off. But a Feature or function that's faulty or doesn't work as intended, it's definitely a negative thing to point out. Solid valid fact to point out in my opinion.

Get me right, I don't like lane assistance at all. But if it's working great, I'd don't call a negative if it's in the car. I just don't use it. But if it's working like @JPN is reporting, it's definitely a thing to keep in mind and even to report to toyota as well.

A agree with a few respondants like this one - Nothing wrong with Start/Stop in principle. It's just that Toyota's implementation is so bad. I had it on my Peugeots and would never had thought about turning it off. On the GRY it's the first button I press after start - thinking of putting a sticker over the dash though cos the light for it is so stupidly bright.

Just stick it in Sport. This disables stop/start but doesn’t show the dash light.

I use mine as a daily driver, and have no issues with the stop/start. It's never caused me to stall the car in 13k miles.

In contrast, drove a Tiguan as a hire car in Ireland, and the stop/start was dangerous on that, and it would kick in when the car was moving and pulling away at a roundabout!

Could it be that there's a problem with the stop/start on some GRYs if people are having vastly different experiences with it?

My only grumble about the s/s is that it’ll kick in while the engine is still warming up. Don’t see the point in that and cannot imagine it has a positive effect on overall emissions.

In general I leave stop/start active when in shopping mode. I have a quick assess of the traffic lights and dip the clutch if the lights are ready to change. It does amaze me though that you can peel off the highway at 110 (plus gst) and come to a stop on a side ride and stop/start shuts the engine down immediately. Hmmm. What about my turbo? Weird. The M2 would let the car idle for a good couple of minutes before shutting down.
