GR Yaris πŸ‘Ž Negatives - what annoys, disappoints, puzzles and generally irks you about the GR Yaris?

Is there??? I have not noticed that! YOu need to explain how it works as i am convinced mine does not return to its original position....
Mine doesn’t, and never has done on any 3 door Toyota Yaris I’ve owned, dating back to the Mk1. I’ve always assumed it’s like that so that when the person gets in the back, the seat doesn’t automatically slam back into the same position and squash their legs?

Agreed it’s annoying when no one actually gets into the back…

I'm going to add the stop start.

I know a lot of people hate stop start and turn it off every time they get in to a car with it, but I have no objection to it in principle. I have it on my Skoda DSG and it's totally fine and unobtrusive.

The GRY is the first manual car I've had it on so my "new" problem might be something others have been aware of for years.

When I want to pull off, dip clutch, engage gear and start to apply the accelerator as the clutch pedal comes up and I release the handbrake. But the Yaris doesn't react quite quick enough, so the engine isn't quite up to speed so it stalls.

Muscle memory kicks in so I dip the clutch and hit the starter button to restart the engine, except because of the stop start the car still thinks it should be running and tries again to start the engine just as me hitting the button has actually turned the car off.

At which point I have to keep the clutch down and hit the button to restart the car again...

Typically this only happens when I'm at the front at the lights (not unusual in the Yaris) so I hold up a line of cars behind me. If I'm a few cars back, I react more slowly dipping the clutch and selecting the gear waiting for the car in front to move.

It's the tiniest of frustrations and something I have to learn (I currently disable start stop if I'm at the front of the queue), but the 5 seconds or so of messing about feels like a lifetime of embarrassment.

Sport mode disables stop/start, that’s all I’m going to say…

I know Sport mode appeals to those brought up on RWD and/or wanting to get maximum value from their LSDs, but I've spent the vast majority of the last 40 years driving front wheel drive or front-biased 4WD so that's the feeling I'm used to.

It's great that the Yaris has the different modes, but the front bias is right for me and that's the configuration I'm most comfortable exploiting. Not that much of it makes any difference at less than 30mph round town where stop-start is happening

I too β€˜grew up’ with front wheel drive cars. Well, I learned to drive and did all my initial trackdays in them.

But Sport mode feels best for day to day driving, as it corrupts the steering the least. The car is not even remotely tail happy in sport mode, it feels perfectly neutral, even when pressing on and getting on the power early out of corners.

I honestly think track mode is there just to balance out the load and heat build up in the diffs, when on track. I’ve tried both on the airfield day with all assists off, and Sport mode feels best, it’s not oversteery at all. Just less understeer.

I have no idea what Normal mode is for, possibly snow?

I only mention twisting the dial to Sport as, for me, it's easier than pressing the s/s button, and doesn't give you the annoying lamp on the dash.

As for driving, 98% of the time it makes no difference as the mechanical grip is so high and most of the time we're not going full gas, but sometimes it's nice to be able to get a little helping hand from the rear in tighter corners with just a squeeze of your right foot :D

The stop/start is something that annoyed me to start with but now i work round it and use anticipation to avoid any embarrassing moments so to speak...

I commute in mine as a daily so it is another "competition" to see how much time the engine is off, had nearly 10 minutes once on a bad day!!

Has to be better for fuel consumption and the environment in my small brain!! :ROFLMAO:

I'd never had stop/start on a car before, and got it wrong a couple of times in the beginning. It didn't take long for it to become natural for me to work with the system tbh. If I'm expecting the lights to change imminently, then I might dip the clutch to start the engine ready, or if I don't want it to kick in, hold the clutch in.

There's nothing quite like having an immobiliser on your car to teach you not to dive for the start button when you stall :D

As someone mentioned above this week I've been driving in Sport mode with traction control off. It's a different car! The main difference is that it doesn't get bogged down off the line. Traction control sucks ass, every car drives better with it off.

Yeah, I tested mine to ensure that Ghost didn't kick in when the car was stalled. Even though I was testing and knew the car was going to stall, I instinctively went for the stop/start button!

(by the way, Ghost doesn't kick in if the car is stalled, it's as you'd expect it to be)

About one month in for me now. FWIW, there's not a lot bothering me. In order of annoyance:

- Tyre roar at higher speeds.
- Harmonic thrum around 100 kph in high gear.
- Silly parts prices dictated by Toyota Europe.
- Initial turn in a bit numb and damping occasionally overwhelmed at slow speeds. Never when pushing on though.
- The pointless 6 month service that depending on who you ask is either mandatory or not for warranty coverage.

Nothing that can't be sorted one way or the other. And aren't we Β§"$Β§"$# lucky the idiots at Toyota are into the same type of car that we are?

- Tyre roar at higher speeds. - Not noticed this too much. Have you disabled ANC?
- Harmonic thrum around 100 kph in high gear. - Yeah, annoying. See my thread.
- Silly parts prices dictated by Toyota Europe. - Luckily I've not needed any parts...yet
- Initial turn in a bit numb and damping occasionally overwhelmed at slow speeds. Never when pushing on though. - Increasing camber should help. I plan to do this soon.
- The pointless 6 month service that depending on who you ask is either mandatory or not for warranty coverage. - Thankfully not a thing here. I didn't think it was a thing in Germany either?

Nothing that can't be sorted one way or the other. And aren't we §"$§"$# lucky the idiots at Toyota are into the same type of car that we are? - tru dat 🍻

I find the tyre roar is very very road surface dependent...

Some like concrete are horrendous, others can be really quiet...

Not sure if someone posted this already (I might have missed some posts through this 11 page thread πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«) but for me the one thing that bothers me is.... the lack of gear indicator. I guess I just got used to having one from other cars. Obviously the seating position could be better but this has been beaten to death already by everyone.

Surely the gear lever is the indicator???

Just a minor point of amusement/bafflement. The air con controls.

When the green LED for the right hand knob is on it means the β€˜Auto’ function is on.

For the left hand knob the green LED is on when the β€˜Dual’ function is off???!!!

Oh yeah the air con controls are all over the place. No logic at all.
