It is, every modern Subaru has it. I use it often when the car has been sitting for more than couple of days just to make me feel better lol
Great - mine will have been sitting for a few months so good know.

I usually drive my car only on the weekends and I tried to start the car after sitting for a week in similar conditions with and without cranking the engine first.

Without cranking the engine in advance I could always hear the valves clatter on the cold start. When I crank the engine first, the start is smoother and I cannot hear the valves. So I am thinking it is not a placebo and actually does as intended.

That doesn't sound right to me.

I can't hear any valve train noise when the car is cranking and on first fire.

maybe my ears are just sensitive but hearing the valve ticking/rattling few seconds after sitting for 1+ week is totally normal IMO. It’s just physics, the oil won’t stay in the heads by itself forever.

I usually drive only on the weekends during nice weather so all my cars that I ever had had valve clatter/ticking few seconds after a cold start. You will never notice this if you drive your car regularly.

The GR86 has the quietest valve train from the cars I had, because you can pre-oil/crank the engine so easily. On other cars you would have to pull a fuse to kill fuel pump to achieve this.

To me it's the injectors that make an awful ticking din.

I have the car just over a week now and done a 1000 miles. 4K rpm max 1st 400 miles then added +1k rpm to max each 200 miles. I haven’t read all replies, but here’s my take on oil change. I’m going to a DIY engine oil and oil-filter change at about between 1500 or 2500 miles with good 0W/20 and then let Toyota do the 12 month service in December guessing about 5000 miles.

My first service is coming up on the horizon very soon. Has anyone had good experiences with Toyota main dealers (GR centre or otherwise) within an 1.5 ish hours drive of Bristol?

If it wasn’t for the warranty I’d be inclined to do it myself at home but for now I’ll likely use a dealer. I just desperately want to find one that isn’t staffed by complete muppets which is the tricky part.

Isn’t that just for the ‘additional warranty’ that starts if you have it serviced by Toyota at the end of year 3? Under the ‘manufacturers warranty’ which covers the first 3 years, is there a condition that it has to be serviced by Toyota each year?

(Fact, for the first 3 years) If Genuine Toyota (Specification) parts (such as oil and filters) are used within the specified mileage (and time periods) specified (of 10000 miles or a year) then the service does not need to be by Toyota any competent place can do the service. But after 3 years to go for and have the extended warranty (up to 10 years) Toyota must do from 3 years on. Eg. Must be Toyota parts from day 1 and must be fitted by Toyota after 3 years but record of first 3 years be needed but not necessary Toyota just competent mechanic using genuine spec parts up to 3 years.

Legally they should fulfil any warranty claims as long as it’s a VAT registered garage using correct filters and fluids and to manufacturer standards. Equally having seen the standard of customer service from Toyota UK I’m not overly convinced they wouldn’t find some minor technicality to wiggle out of a substantial claim should I have a catastrophic engine failure or similar. The same reason I’m hesitant to take the car on a track day and open myself up to a claim being rejected if the engine lunches itself.

Don’t over think it. Enjoy the car.

First change yesterday DIY. Millers 0w20 at 4250 miles. Oil did not appear to carry any metal particles and there was no sign of RTV. I did break in carefully. It will now see the red line "when appropriate".
Great job. I am going to oil change at 1500 miles 👍

Changed engine-oil 1280 miles. 0W20 Millers Oils Part No 8430-5L. They recommend it for normal GR use and/or extreme use.

Done mine at 840miles (8 months old) prior to going to Spa and euro road trip.

Got back home and its showing around 2000miles now. WIll change oil again.

I'm using Mobil 1 5w30 at the moment but I change oil so freqeuntly that I don't think oil brand matters that much. May go Petronas Oil (I've used before in my Mini without issue) as its about 1/2 the price of Mobil 1. I guess my oil does 2000miles max.

Wow wow my car has loved its first oil change. 1280 miles. Used 0W20 Millers. Noticeable difference. Improved freer reving smother etc which I’m not sure if those differences are down to Millers or just the fact that it’s new fresh oil and the old original oil is out. All good 👍

Sorry if this has already been asked in here, had a skim and couldn't see.

How much does it cost to get the oil changed at Toyota? I just asked my local and they said 315 which I'm sure is just the price of a service...

I know I should do it myself given that it's fairly simple on these cars given the filter is up top, but I've never done it in my life and have zero experience jacking a car up (shame I know).

Well that should tell you all you need to know about that particular dealership! Sadly these days when you phone service you speak to someone in a central office who only goes by what the computer tells them in front of them. Had it with two Toyota dealerships recently, the staff usual have no clue about actually servicing unfortunately.
I did find a good garage this year who was able to undertake an oil service and scope/oil filtering (to check for metal and other debris). The oil change cost me circa £130 and the scope and oil filtering £35. Was able to go into the garage and was able to see them performing the scope. Hope that helps.
