GR86 "That's a fresh whip bruv"; or the Toyota GR86 collated feedback thread

I was driving away from my local Gtechniq Detailers when I got waved down by an elderly lady, so I opened the passenger window to see what she wanted: "That is such a fantastic looking car, I love it!" she said gesticulating wildly from bonnet to boot, "The blue colour is so wonderful, it's beautiful! Beautiful! I just had stop you and to tell you". I thanked her for the kind comments and gave her a wide smile (the sort reserved for when backing out of a room from a potential maniac). Suddenly wishing I'd played it more safe with the Hai-Karate aftershave, I made good my escape with a warm glow and honour intact.

Surely that's part of the detailer's service - compliments included? :p

What is a local Gtechniq Detailers? I mean, I know the brand, and I know what a detailer is, but I didn't know that the brand had their own endorsed detailers?

I went to Waitrose in Salisbury to get some snacks after collecting my car from its first service. As I got out, couple boys appeared on their bikes. They must have been about 10. One of them goes, nice car man, how much for one off these? What model is this?
I said it is a GR86 and it will cost you about 30 grand to get one of these. Wow boy goes, looks fast, does it have twin turbo? I said no, it has boxer engine, pistons move horizontally in this special engine. Both boys were looking at me blankly, they did not have a clue what I was on about. Then they parked the bikes and sat at the bench near by, admiring the car. I went in got things and went out of the shop, they were still sitting on the bench talking about cars. I drove off with the smile.

Went to pick up a Sonos speaker off a guy the other day and he saw my car and said "is that your Porsche?"

I smiled and politely corrected him....

Not direct feedback per se, but a quote passed on to me by Ms Fox representing the views of one of her work colleagues (known as WC from here on).

The subject of cars apparently came up, and Ms Fox mentioned my GR86 and how much we liked it. WC asked, quite reasonably, how much the GR86 cost, and Ms Fox mentioned the £30k us first batchers secured our cars for. WC apparently displayed some malcontent at this, and reported that we "should have got a new Merc for that".

Now everyone is entitled to their opinion, but in the spirit of the 'what could you have bought new for the same money' thread , I had a look to see just how much 'New Merc' £30k gets you.

The answer, comrades, is the bum-basic A Class A180 Sport Edition, without any options and with a blistering 136ps, for £30,705.

Think I'd rather sh!t in my hands and clap, to be honest.

Seems like WC is a bit out of touch when Golfs start at £27k these days.

Hopefully your wife will avoid sharing any further information with WC who clearly loves to piss on people's chips.

Thankfully my chips remain dry.

I think this fellow mentioned is a label/'badge' freak. Would rather have a 'Merc' (any Merc) than a bespoke RWD 2.4 sports coupe with LSD and other nice bits, even if it is a boggo poverty-spec hatchback with power that a supermini would be embarrassed with.

The sort that would happily spend three figures on cheaply-made knitwear if it said BOSS HUGO BOSS on it, but has never even heard of John Smedley.

Each to their own I suppose.
