So I guess I’m pretty old school in my approach to cars, but the idea of having to change tyres for the winter seems like a right faff - surely PS4s aren’t so specialised that they’re only good in dry conditions??
But reading the posts about all-season tyres I’m wondering if I’m missing out. I daily drive my car and it’s still running PS4s with loads of life left in them, and so far all seems ok. I did have to drive up a short hill on a bend early one morning at about -3c when it had rained the previous night (and the gritter had forgotten to salt the road) and in fairness there was some pretty comical sideways action, but I suspect any tyres would’ve been the same in ice rink conditions?
So a few noob questions about all season tyres:
Do A/S tyres provide more grip than PS4s in all conditions except when it’s bone dry? (if so they sound like a better all round choice for a daily driver?)
Would A/S tyres be better than PS4s on a rainy summer’s day? Definitely
What are the conditions where A/S tyres provide worse grip than PS4s, and are they a lot worse (similar to primacy’s on a GT86??) Warm, dry days.
When you guys with CC2s are saying they’re great, do you mean you can actually press on through the bends on grimey B-roads, as if it was a dry road?? (If so then count me in…) or are you still being mindful that we’re in a RWD sports car and going a bit easy? Yes you can press on much more confidently than on summers. But in near-zero and sub-zero temperatures you still need to be careful.
I’ve read a few comments on here about folk having fun on a wet roundabout on CC2s - I thought the point of these was to provide more grip in wet? Or is it just that they’re more progressive? You need to be pretty deliberate on a roundabout to get it out of line if it’s just wet.
When there is actual ice on an unsalted road are all season tyres any better than PS4s or are we all in the same boat? Massively so.
Has anyone tried running PS4s at lower PSI in winter - would this have a similar effect as running all season tyres? No idea, but I’d doubt it.
Thanks!
