TL;DR - my cars interior was damaged and have rejected.

This whole thing has been a headache for me and was starting to cause me a lot of stress. Went to inspect today pending collection on Friday and find the back seat was warped and the leather badly stretched. Nothing mentioned on PDI. I feel that sinking feeling and call Toyota who say they need to now do a full investigation into X, Y, Z and it could be a while before it’s ready to collect. Sent over photos and the manager at the dealer also taken pics. Being at my whits end already with it I cancelled my order. I can’t bare the thought of weeks back and forth again. It’s taken the shine of the buying process and left feeling annoyed with it all.

Doing myself a favour and going to step away.

Best of luck for others collecting their cars, be sure to check everything over!

@Jayware33 That is such a bummer! Pretty sure that's the 4th or 5th car over at Western Toyota to be rejected due to defects? Was the seat defect quite obvious to the casual observer? Makes me nervous for mine up at Halbeath - I'll have to take a head torch, clipboard, pen and do a full inspection before I take it away!

The seat was not sitting correctly and it looks like the stitching was defective.

The dealer should have spotted this and said nothing. They have been awful to deal with, no contact, no phone calls when promised and felt like I was at the bottom of the pile, just felt like someone they didn’t want to deal with which is sad as I’ve been a loyal customer to them over the years. Toyota Online were no angels either.

TBH, the car should never have left the factory with a seat looking like that. Seems somebody in the QA process has skipped a few boxes there! You are correct wrt the dealership, they should have flagged this up themselves. It's like some just couldn't give a f**k because it wasn't sold by their own team :censored:. Good luck with your future purchase. With luck on my side you may see mine out and about next year 🤞

Thanks mate. Hopefully mine is the exception. I did also find out the reason mine has 32 miles on it was because it was previously rejected. I suspect now I know why, but nothing concrete there.

Fingers crossed for you, sure it will be good to go!

That’s extremely poor form on all fronts. Toyota online have aggravated a fair few of us with the interactions we’ve had the misfortune of having with them and the dealer proving to be every bit as bad is the cherry on the cake. I can understand you feeling you want to walk away given the whole saga you’ve endured so far!

I presume no word as to whether they have any stock of cancelled orders left to take if you understandably feel you have to reject this car ?

It’s been a rough few weeks. They never said about cancelled orders but I’ve lost all interest now. I felt a weight off my shoulders when it was cancelled if I’m being honest. Going to paint this one up to bad luck and timing.

Completely understand, a bit like a failing relationship there comes a point where the effort feels like flogging a dead horse and it’s better for both parties to walk away. Hopefully you won’t end up wondering if it’s the one that got away later on down the line.

The only alternative I can think of that might make for a better outcome (and remove frustration of TOL and your local dealer) would be if a forum member with a well cared for and “good” car has to part with theirs in the future due to a change in circumstances,

Yeh, I’d seen a few on auto trader for similar money but with PPF too. My other option was an ND2 MX-5. Brand new for £26,350 and that car was a blast to drive. Really enjoyed it so may end up moving toward this.

That's horrendous QC from Toyota, and not much better from Western. What are they playing at - very disappointing that they hadn't checked this.

That seat doesn’t look great but I reckon it’s an easy fix for a decent trim shop. I’ve been to one that does all the repairs for main dealers with seats etc. I would just TOL to get you another car. Unless you’re a hairdresser and really want an MX5. 😜

They could simply order a new seat.. Job done

The seat cushions are easy to remove, they are held in with one easily accessible bolt. It would easy to just swap one from another car, does the dealer in question have a demo car? If so, I think I'd be tempted to demand they just swap them there and then.

Regardless, it is pretty appalling that it got to you in that state at all.

I can't believe this would pass the quality control at factory, I suspect something happened at transportation, or even at the dealer.

@Jayware33 having read about your frustration (that rear seat - how can anyone think that's acceptable to pass on to a customer?), I logged in to say the same thing as @Hachi-roku here. Sound advice.

I can empathise with your situation, Toyota have managed to drop the ball so many times and then miscommunicate at every step of the way, it's quite an achievement.
The whole sales model has been a disaster from the start and, if the car itself wasn't so good, they could have had many more cancellations.
I did what @Hachi-roku mentioned and bought a car privately, even though 'my' car is now ready and it has been a pleasure to deal with the seller so far. Collection Saturday 😎

Wow! That's terrible that it could even get to the dealer, never mind being shown to you! Really poor service from a company that's built it's reputation on quality! Good luck with whatever you purchase.

Totally agree thats terrible. But try not to get to disheartened, you felt like a load had been lifted off your shoulders so thats really positive. Good luck with whatever you decide to buy, but take your time looking I think the MX5 is a great option, seem solid and have that cracking gear change.

At the same time are we overreacting? Problem has been caught, the dealer would fix it free of charge, and there's still a 10 year warranty on the car if you service at main dealer.
You buy any other car there's 3 year warranty...

Can see what you're saying. I have a lot going on at the moment and this buying process has been failry rough from the beginning. It wasn't the seat as such, it was all the little things up until that point, it was mentally exhusting for me. This felt like the final cut. I don't have to take this on, I could let it go and it got to that point.

Interestingly, Toyota want to make it right when I requested to cancel but I have little faith. Having slept on things, I will allow them one more chance to see if they can deliver, or at least give them the opportunity and see what comes of it. Im not hopeful though given the experience so far.
