Got told, flat out, by an 'expert' that my car wasn't a real GR!

The logistics behind finding a written-off 5 door car, and getting it rebuilt as a 3 door, lower roof, wider arches, GR bumpers, etc. astound me, but apparently that must be what I've done.

He knows it's not genuine 'by the way I set off from work' apparently.

It would be flattering someone thought you build that one from regular 5 door car in a barn, and also exclusively designed and built bespoke 3-cyl engine that happens to be worlds most powerful 3-cyl. Tony Stark levels. ;)

Well yesterday evening.
i was taking my boy to Maccy D’s and decided to go the back lane way (from Bluebell Hill to Snodland via St.Peter’s Village, Kent)and got behind a black 71 plate GR Yaris. They noticed me behind them and gave me a hazard light flash recognition👍 which was nice. Then we both proceeded to have a good Jaunt towards snodland😁
unfortunately there was some loose gravel on the road and and ping, cracked windowscreen. Oh well😢

That's a bit funny to me, the other day I gave a ride to a friend meeting a seller who asked said friend how he got there, and he instantly follwed out to my car when he was told 'rally car'. The seller guy complimented me on my work in widening the car :D, after correcting him some small talk followed, however no talk about it being fake, some people are amazing ;)

That is a beaut. I mean, what would easier; Walking into a Toyota garage and putting down a £250 deposit on credit card and getting a GR Yaris on 0% finance or; Buying a hybrid and doing everything you’ve said, including a new set of forged BBS wheels and upgrading the brakes, oh what’s the point.

I wish I’d written down all the stupid things that self proclaimed car enthusiasts have said over the years, it would make quite a funny book.

A car alarm fitter once told me that his rather ratty looking Vauxhall Vectra was much faster than my Honda Integra (which isn’t crazy despite his model not being the V6 version), but then that it had 700 bhp and did the quarter mile in under 10 seconds.

These people must have to stop breathing when they pee, to free up the brain power.

There are some good sleepers/q-cars out there though, strictly speaking fitting a 700hp mill to a ratty Vectra is not that far fetxhed for someone working with cars for a living? Of course some of them are just self-delusional dreamers, aka liars ;)

Downside with sleepers, some previous cars but even the "yaris" has quite a lot of such vibes to the unknowing general public, is people don't believe you if you tell them it's "faster then this" or it's for the latter "a rally car for the road". They only know to be impressed by Porsches, Supercars and possibly anything that has a general shape as those...
 
Parked the GRY away for a few days and switched to the Mini, which feels a little bit „imprecise“ or „spongy“ and has harsh suspension…
 
Installed shifter bushings. Nicer feel but now notice ~3-4mm free play in the shifter fore-aft. Is it there on a stock car too, or anyone else with these? My shortshift seems solid so curious if I just didn't notice it before, or if there is some issue that needs adressing.

Edit: I now think it's probably normal. Left-right has centering spring so feels tight but on gearbox end there is actually some play there too. Fore-aft no centering spring so you'd feel the little play that always exists. But with mushy rubbers in I never thought about it, perhaps why they are there, for general "refinement" ...

Spent some time driving the little rocket, changed the gear knob & some TLC to get rid of the fine scratches/swirl marks on the back spoiler and tailgate plastic then washed and polished. ✨

Had an early morning drive to the local supermarket, I had to take it easy as the fuel was very low 14 miles remaining. Filled up whilst watching a range rover back into a poor car owner, then off to get some beer and pizza ready for the rugby. I saw a group of young petrol heads taking pictures of their cars . I just couldn't resist driving slowly passed and saying "you need to buy a real car", the reply was "what U talking about, you're driving a Yaris". The youth of today really need educating.
 
Gave my car a good clean, wish I hadn't. Stone chips on the spokes of the wheels, OSF wheel arch another chip that has broken through the PPF and finally a black scuff to the top of the NSF wheel arch.
That said , my car still looks and drives amazing
I feel so lucky to own this very special car and drive it daily
 
Was followed by my friend in his S5, which has a very similar power to weight ratio and was told my car gains speed way too fast off slow corners and roundabouts.
