GR86 GR86 - Brake Upgrade Guide

Anyone just upgraded pads yet? I want something that will work well for light track use and general fast road driving.
Also, am I right in thinking that any post 2017 non-Brembo equipped GT86 pads will fit just fine?

I am currently on Endless MX72Plus all round and new high temp fluids now. Massively improved the brake feel (much firmer pedal with less travel, braking power very adjustable with pedal pressure alone), will need to test it on track but do expect it to survive 15 minutes sessions fine.

I'll probably go this way too. What was your fluid preference? How much does it need?

I ended up going for PFC Z-Rated and Motul RBF660 fluid, booked in to be done next week. I'm at Brands Hatch Indy on the 29th so I'll let you know how I get on.

ETA: You should need just under 1L @KobayashiMaru86 - I ordered 2x 500ml bottles of RBF660 from Opie Oils. Use discount code GET10 too, although better voucher codes may be floating around too.

Bedded in my new pads today and happy with the result. Perfectly fine in normal driving but get noticeably better with some heat and no fade encountered yet. The fluid seems to be doing its job. I’m at Brands on Wednesday so will see how well they fair on track.

The car acquitted itself well at Brands Hatch yesterday. What was supposed to be just a regular track day seemed to end up being an informal test day for various racing teams so it was a tad intimidating to begin with but I got into the groove eventually. Constantly looking for ballistic Caterhams in your mirrors was the order of the day though.

Brake fade wasn’t a problem with sessions kept to around 10-15 mins and the limiting factor was the stock PS4s which get gooey pretty quickly.

There was a chap there with a modified GT86 and it was good to compare the two - it’s certainly given me some ideas.

@Will300 what's the clearance like with those wheels, and do you think that kit is likely to clear most 17 inch wheels as well?

Barrel clearance is extremely good. Offset clearance is very good, the only wheels I'm aware of with issue are the stock GT86/BRZ (Gen1) wheels, as it requires a spacer. It's probably the most common (UK) kit for the Gen 1 cars, so plenty of people have used them with lots of different wheels.
The smallest wheel I personally tried is a 17x7 +40.

Awesome, thanks for the info. Have you upgraded the rears as well or are they stock?

Where did you order the pads from?

I went with Ferodo DS1.11 all around and Motul RBF660. I've track tested it and works very well. Works well on the street too but with some noise. I will definitely fit some Porsche brake cooling ducts as next step.

How do they perform from cold ? Is it possible in your opinion to run those pads as dual track/street pad or would you rather swap them in before track days (noise is my last concern) ?

It’s definitely possible and I will do it sometime when I’m too lazy to change back to stock pads. They work very well to brake the car from cold but they do make some more noise depending on how much transfer layer you have. They will also be quite abrasive on your discs if not up to temp but luckily discs are pretty inexpensive.

Wow. Just wow. 👏

With a GR86 on order and a plan to do moderate levels of track work with the car I was about 10hrs down the hole of what conversions are available with what pads for the car.

This post is the single best post I've seen on any car forum for any marque. I feel my first toe in to Toyota ownership since my Mk2 MR2 (more Porsche 911 than the actual modern 911) is giving me confidence in the community around these cars 👍

My GR86 isn't even here yet but brakes are going to be the first thing I will change for something a little more beefy. From what I have seen from pictures I have looked at is that the "Brembo Performance Pack" for the old GT86 bolts straight up to the GR86? Also these calipers look identical to Subaru Impreza WRX calipers from 2008 onwards so they should bolt straight on?

WRX STi calipers seem a lot more plentiful and could pick up a full set for about a grand. Refurbish them, new discs, pads, lines and shield and I should have a decent setup for around 2k.
