GR Yaris HJS Downpipe with ECE-approval

I noticed an update posted on the old forum on 29 October 2022. Tralien mentions he just installed the HJS and found the hose to be long enough. This makes me think he got the updated version.

However, the part/pipe of the HJS cat that is meant to slot in the OPF section was too long and required cutting.

So many reports suggesting poor quality control at HJS! If/when the time comes, I'll be checking what Armytrix offer at that time, as they are the only other sport catalyst I'm aware of with a chance to be street-legal in the UK; and in fact 200 cpsi, so more free flowing than the 300 cpsi HJS one.
FWIW the workshop that installed mine had no issues they couldn't deal with and did the whole job in 3h, first time working on a GRY.

Good to know. In all fairness, the post I was referring to also mentioned that they too dealt with the issue then and there, ie they cut the end of the pipe.

My point is about HJS and their quality control. After all, since what we can see isn't always as it should be, it makes me wonder how things are where we don't have access or knowledge to tell.

All in all, I expect more for the four-digit price asked and I echo posts like:
weird if HJS is providing fitting kit that does not comply with the car.

Agreed. When you spend a certain amount of money you expect perfect fitment.

the hjs is very expensive.....and to be fair, the too short hose and the too long pipe are problems that are very easy to fix. sure, it should fit out of the box...but it could be some point of "additional safety" when fitting to a non-oem opf / catback. cutting is much easier than if it would be too short ;)

overall I cant see any quality issues with hjs.....the hose was too short, sure, but the pipe that was too long could be for a good reason / compatibility reason. The heatshield solution e.g. is much better than the stock cat. so I can recommend this product overall

From what I gather the Armytrix is not compatible with the stock GPF, in other words it’s a full turbo back system, which could end up being quite expensive.
I only spoke with one of the Armytrix UK resellers and they are of the view that their sports cats are compatible with the stock OPF/GPF. It's just that Armytrix sell products to various countries, so we would need to advise which version we're after.

A few more points worth noting about the Armytrix cat:
- it's more free flowing than the HJS;
- its basic [stainless steel] version doesn't seem to have any heat shield like the HJS does. You would have to opt for the ceramic coated version for that;
- compatibility with stock OPF/GPF is likely but still not confirmed to me 100% at this stage;
- it has no ECE certificate like the HJS one does. It's assumed to pass the UK MOT emissions test, but I don't know if there might be insurance implications with using the Armytrix cat instead of the HJS one;
- I don't know of any GRYs having it fitted and I get the impression that everyone just goes for the HJS one, despite quality issues posts which I found quite a lot given the relatively small numbers of HJS units fitted.

My local Toyota dealer put my hjs on. Was a nice fit, no issues as far as i know. They usually tell me if something didn't fit. Is Armytrix 200 cpsi also Euro6?

@Spirited I'd say there was one small issue which is the same for several here reported (not multiple issues), instantly amended when finally someone could be arsed to alert HJS. The one with the too long pipe was also easily fixed.

I find small issues like this with other products all the time and they barely got reported (I try to) , so we have high quality reporting here..

As for being expensive, it's costly both to get the ECE approval (emission testing) and the actual catalyser must be loaded with rare metals needed for it to be as clean as OEM despite significantly better flow... yes not cheap but at least there is a reason (thinking about all the exhausts with GR Tax...)

I wonder how many are/were had the V-Band flange as warped as my one was, or if the installers even noticed it ?

HJS quality control certainty didn't :eek:

Butted up against the OEM flange

With a straight edge across it from one side

From the other side

As much of the flange as I dared taking off on a surface grinder to flatten it enough to get a reliable seal, seems to have worked

Pretty poor really especially with the cost of the product & being on the other side of the world 🤬

The Wagner one on my Supra was perfect & I assumed the HJS would be the same being German made.....

I had also flange? Issue though it sealed itself after run in - has been working fine so far but yes not 100% awesomeness (though I love my GR)

The "funny" thing is that all this is far removed from the Toyota manufacturing philosophy of zero defects, "kaizen", etc.

The Toyota CEO takes every opportunity to emphasise on the attention to detail for this car. He hints towards stringent quality control at 3:07 here and on other occasions.

But if we want to put a final touch, as he prompted us, by installing a more free-flowing cat that's street legal in the UK, I feel we're stuck with the monopoly of this HJS product. Despite its ISO credentials and the "made in Germany" badge, it seems to not always be a perfect fit, both literally and metaphorically.

Given have seen missing turbo clamps and cracked oil lines (same issue?) it is not zero defect fully, of course none production process is in real life.
Its new car and concept so there will be areas to improve for sure.

Have you seen the position the oil cap is when closed?
Very far from perfect. Quite literally the opposite.
A detail oriented producer should have corrected that.
Sure but in terms of quality standardisation the GRY is closer to a typical Toyota, Honda, Mazda, etc rather than a Lamborghini, where no car drives/feels the same even if they are the same model.

As a customer I favour anyone who strives for higher quality and zero defects.
Even if that's not realistically possible 100%, it's reassuring if the supplier is committed to that.

Hence I appreciate that the Toyota CEO sets that tone with every opportunity, so that this mindset cascades as much as possible to his workforce and hopefully is reflected on how my car is built.

Similarly, I would feel confident bringing my car to @Phil1291 for a service or mod, as, for example, you regularly mention in your videos that you check how well minor aftermarket parts fit to give you an indication of how well made and fitting the more complex parts of the same manufacturer will be.

So, while I'm glad we have the HJS cat available in the market, I feel that @Phil1291 's mindset and work output is more aligned to the philosophy of the GRY than the HJS's mindset and product output seems to be. This doesn't mean that I expect @Phil1291 to make no mistakes ever. It's just that I see a better cultural fit and I wish this was the case with HJS too.

If we're fortunate enough to have an alternative sports cat offered in the market with similar certification (ECE, Euro 6), this threat of competition may urge HJS to up their game and offer us a better finished product. I'll keep on dreaming 💤

What’s wrong with the oil cap? Don’t change the oil myself so I’ve never noticed.

I believe you tried to get in touch with HJS. Did you manage to get through to them and get a response?

Eventually

HJS offered to pay what it cost me (invoiced) to address ......which is fine but it shouldn't have happened in the first place

It only "cost me" $50 Kiwi, €30 to get the flange ground flat by a mate, the local dealership fitted the DP for me for nothing, so there was little point claiming that from HJS, by the time bank fees etc were taken into account it would receive very little in compensation, an insult really

The fact that the dealership had it on the hoist for all of the day & I had several trips into town etc to diagnose the problem, fix for it & get it back to them basically meant it destroyed a whole day for myself, lucky I'm my own boss otherwise it would have been a even bigger mess

So all & all a cluster, rest assured if it was a local product it would have gone back for replacement, little point from the other side of the world

I should have checked it myself when I received but never imagined a product like this would have had such a major defect, it should have been replaced
