Forgive my ignorance but I've never worried about over-revving at all, assuming the limiter would catch it, is this dangerous?

I drove for years on the track and never gave it a second thought, despite occassionally hitting the limiter a little.

Hitting the limiter every so often is fine, but all it does is electronically limit the revs by cutting fuel or spark. It can't prevent over revving due to a mis-shift which is what happened in the video above. The damage looks pretty catastrophic going by the amount of shrapnel in their pan.

@PVGR A video which quite nicely explains what a “MoneyShift“ , I found it informative.

PS Those of us in the Auto club, no need to watch other than to understand what the Manual folk will be talking about in due course 😉

Unlike the Americans, we can drive "stick"

We’ll time will tell 🤔 we’re also a bit different to our American cousins , Brits who wreck their engine through their lack of skill are less likely to shout about it and put it on UTooB . But they will complain that the “box is mis shifting“ and nothing to do with them , 🤷‍♂️ I do also venture into the GRY Forums occasionally 👀 Someone in Germany 🇩🇪 blew their GRY and I believe they we NordyLeafy “Experts” so apparently it can happen to the best of you “stickies“ 😂

PS You know where I think “sticks“ should go 🤣

Drinking game: take a shot each time AndyRC mentions that he ordered an auto.

Next time you at at motorway speed, put your car into 2nd and see how anything electronic can stop it*

*Don't actually do this.

A guy in Japan took the plastic oil pick up tube off and cut it open to have a look at how the strainer is designed , no evidence yet that this is the cause of the reported engine failure but at least we now know how it looks. I’m not an automotive engineer (but I am an engineer) and anything designed to catch “stuff” and prevent it getting somewhere it doesn’t belong will periodically need cleaning 🤷‍♂️ Another sump plug directly below the pick would do the trick to pull/suck the captured “stuff” out👍

Edit. It would make an interesting study for some under graduate engine student looking for a project at how the flow is affected as the Strainer becomes increasingly blocked. The top section always appears to block first as that will be normally be The path of least resistance to the oil being sucked towards the pump. 🤔

Interesting comments that in the US things “may“ be moving towards a “Service Bulletin“ regarding the issue of Room Temperature Vulcanising (RTV )Silicone breaking away In the oil pan. At least I learned what RTV is an acronym for 👍

Check out the matching blue calipers 🤔

I clicked the Like button when reading this post earlier today purely as a mark of thanks to AndyRC for posting the link to the video - after all, in this context, the word "Like" does not really seem to be appropriate.

However, having now re-watched the video and read the accompanying comments, I cannot help but wonder for how much longer we will all have to wait before Toyota (GB) PLC formally addresses the questions posed in my post at #89 above...

Did he say 5 oil filters will last him 6 months?

FYI - Took me ages to find it but he said this was his 4th or 5th oil change.
