GR Yaris Dealer Service - Oil Query

This thread has set me off thinking and I now reckon I've been given the wrong stuff at the 1st service back in December. The invoice quotes T08880-83886 TGMO 0W20 AFE 5 which looks to be a GF-5 product. This morning I sent an online enquiry to Toyota Parts Direct simply asking what is the correct oil for a GR-Yaris and they came back with the GR Supra stuff which isn't GF-6/SN Plus either. So there seems to be some confusion around the dealer network, a bit of a worry when Toyota have flogged 3,000 GRYs in the UK.

I'm due another service or inspection next month so I'm going to go down to the dealer and have a word. Does anyone know the Toyota part code for the correct oil?

...
They are either worryingly ignorant or know full and well that they have no intention of supplying and fitting the correct oil.
It's probably a combination of the two, depending on which person/garage you contact.

Plus they treat us (as also indicated by the responses you got) as if we are completely ignorant.

They should be the experts educating us, not the other way around!

This is the oil used. Part number is T08880-83590 on the invoice: Copy of label on the barrel I was given.

Oh, Had mine serviced last week and that’s exactly what it’s got on my invoice. I too challenged prior to the service but was assured by the dealer it was the right oil. How did you resolve? As explained above?
Asked them to provide the technical information for the oil and demonstrate what had been used as the reference on the invoice was wrong.

Depends on what you consider to be correct oil.

The manual provides alternative options. Last time I checked, Toyota would only make available one of these options in the UK, ie the SN PLUS “Resource-Conserving”. However, I understand that this is the lower quality option and also it's not showing on your engine oil cap:

I have high confidence that Ravenol provide the oil spec showing on the engine oil cap.

@Brasso thanks for sharing code & photo. On that photo I don't see any reference to "Resource Conserving" or "RC" (eg next to the "SP" bit). Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me can advise.

The manual, like the cap, also lists ILSAC GF-6A as noted on the barrel label so I assume that's okay.

@oilman you offer correct-spec options. Should we be concerned when a label mentions "API SP, ILSAC GF-6A" with no reference to "Resource Conserving" or "RC"?

Thanks!

Mine was serviced week before last with a oil I'm not sure of but when questioned eventually told was wrong and so last week it went back in and was changed to 't 08880 - wa010' GR Supra oil and the oil that was previously used is actually fine too.

Now I'm worried that the GR Supra oil is incorrect as it says it is SN and the minimum for the GR Yaris is Oil grade: API grade SN PLUS “ResourceConserving” or SP “Resource-Conserving”; or ILSAC GF-6A multigrade engine oil Recommended viscosity (SAE): SAE 0W-20

Does anybody have a definite answer on whether the GR Supra oil is wrong? TIA

You have the definitive answer; it's as you wrote it above.

The SN is unsuitable.

Consider using the info you found in the manual to fight your case with whoever put the wrong oil in your car, no matter how may times they got it wrong.

You don't want the wrong engine oil in your car.

Googling Toyota Parts Direct, I read on that website "Working as part of a major Toyota dealership..."

So, they and their opinions are no more valid/reliable than the rest of the dealers, I guess.

you may find this useful: The issue I still have is that the Oil listed on my invoice 08880-83540 does not appear in the table so I’m still not 100% confident it’s correct. I’ve ordered Millers 🙄.

Would it be Millers 0W30 EE performance engine oil, Nanodrive Ester ,if so how much did you pay

I'm in the same situation with my local dealer, Snows in Exeter.
When I booked the car in I enquired about the oil spec they would be using and the bookings lady went off to ask, but came back with "it's the special Toyota one"! Not satisfied with this I persisted and she told me that I would be phoned back with more info, surprise, no call.

Rang again two days later, got through to service, asked again about spec and and after a rather awkward pause was told 0 - 20. I responded with "that's the viscosity grade, not the spec" and was rewarded with another awkward pause which I ended by directly asking if the oil met the spec as per my manual and as marked on the engine oil cap.

This was answered by yes it does, even though he clearly hadn't got a clue what I was on about!!!!!!!

NOT IMPRESSED

I'll be supplying my own.

I purchased mine from exeter, was not very impressed during that process. When I collected the tyre pressures were all over the place. I’m not filled with confidence that when it comes to the first service they will do a good job.
I may enquire at Paignton Snows when it comes to that time, they are not a ‘GR’ centre like Exeter but I don’t think that will matter.

The T08880-83590 code above is included in the table that @MerlinBV very helpfully shared below:

⚠️I notice there that under section APPLICATION (top row, capital letters, dark blue background), column Turbocharger, there is no "o" mark in the cell for that oil.

The "0W-20 AFE Extra" that's marked on the table as SNPlus, should be the one the manual lists as one of the options for the GRY. On the table shared above, the SNPlus does have the "o" mark under the Turbocharger column.

This makes me think that the situation in December 2021 (if this is indeed when that table was valid) hadn't changed. I understand that the only Toyota oil (barely) suitable for the GRY has consistently been the one showing on the table as "0W-20 AFE Extra".

If for any reason I had to choose an oil from the Toyota range, I would only find the "0W-20 AFE Extra" acceptable. I would be concerned about the T08880-83590 not displaying the Turbocharger mark that the "0W-20 AFE Extra" has on the table above.

In practice, non-Toyota oils seem to still offer higher quality options that are better value-for-money at the same time! For reference, you pay roughly the same money as for Toyota oils, but for a higher quality oil.

Hi Mark, 0W20 £43 from eBay. Looks like I bought the last one from this supplier until they re-stock

Thanks.

I filled out a online form last night and they contacted me this morning saying they agree its the wrong oil and are looking into it a bit more. Also, that the original oil they used was correct or at least acceptable so shouldn't of been changed. I am going to ask for a part number of that if they wish to use it again. I'm sure he said it was the 'barrel oil' which makes me think its hybrid 0w20 which I have seen other people mention??

Supra Oil is not GRY oil

This is what we use here

All oil is the same Bro......🤬

I have given the part number to him of the above from a Aus facebook post so I'll see if he can find that. Googling from the UK only comes up with Aus websites though.

I don't use my Yaris as a daily but I have been out in it for a proper drive since it has been changed, should I be worried about the engine in any way? A lot of people say 'I don't care what they put in, I have a 10 year warranty' but that's just daft to me, I don't want the hassle and what if something happens in year 11? Prevention is always the first method.

Toyota Japan managed to get 270bhp out of a 1.6lt engine.

Toyota GB offered this modern beast for the same money that 2lt homologation specials cost more than a decade ago. And then they threw in a 10-year warranty on top.

The least we can do is use the right engine oil.

It's proving tricky for many (which is awful and unfair if they trusted the official Toyota network), but I'm sure we'll figure it out together.
