GR Yaris Dealer Service - Oil Query

Best go to dealers where the staff actually owns grys
Is that worthwhile, unless the staff are intending to keep the cars long-term?

If a car is only being kept while in warranty and is kept in the Toyota network, owners may not be worried what oil is used.

Better still take it to a dealer that is a GR centre, and has trained GRY technicians who understand the servicing schedule for the GR Yaris. Mine told me they had bought in the oil in bulk.

I don't think GR centre mechs get any different training. As far as I know, the only difference has been that they have had demo cars available for us to test drive. That's about it.

... they had bought in the oil in bulk.
Do you know which oil? I'm asking as the only oil Toyota indicated as suitable, as per...
So just to update, I contacted Toyota through social media and they asked the technical team and came up with this as the oil that should be used. I am going to check my oil cap and get back to them with a picture of mine if it is the same as another posters above.

They did also confirm that using the GR Supra oil was incorrect and should be logged as a error.
... appeared to be available only in 1lt & 5lt until December, as per this table...
you may find this useful: The issue I still have is that the Oil listed on my invoice 08880-83540 does not appear in the table so I’m still not 100% confident it’s correct. I’ve ordered Millers 🙄.

It would be great to have clarity on this, if you could get any details or spec for the oil your technician sourced. Thanks.

Millers in. Has anyone else had a stubborn oil filter? If so what tool did you use to remove?

GF-5 SN is the issue. As long as it's SN Plus it should meet the requirements for preventing oil induced low speed pre-ignition (LSPI) but personally I would want GF-6A SP for peace of mind as that standard looked at LSPI as a specific requirement

This thread seems to be going round and round with people not reading earlier posts.

Toyota GB has had GF5 standard since launch, which isn't to spec but they seem it 'acceptable'. GF-6A needs to be provided, some Toyot dealers will be happy some won't, some like RRG even supply GF-6A from miller's/fuchs.

Any decent indy can do this if you prefer, there's a tick box sheet to maintain warranty, no it won't be 10 years, just the 5. Keep the receipt of the oil purchase showing the spec to go hand in hand with this.

That's the choice we all currently have to go through.

Phoned a couple of Toyota dealerships near me to ask specifically about oil spec they use for the GR Yaris. Yeomans in Eastbourne use GF-5 and that was about as much interest as they had. Yeomans Brighton however were much more interested and did a fair amount of digging. It turns out that the oil they use for the GRY is known to be GF-5 because for some reason Toyota can’t order the GF-6 in bulk in the UK at the moment. Because of this, whenever a service is being done for the GRY they have to order the oil direct from Toyota (I’m assuming this is to monitor which cars have been serviced with the GF-5) They (Toyota) then send bottles of oil to the dealership, so at least they’re not using the bulk oil in drums.

Additionally after doing some more research and calling me back (a rare thing these days it seems) the guy discovered that Toyota have recently updated their requirement for oil to be GF-6 so maybe they’re going to switch their bulk oil to this as well?
I also mentioned bringing my own oil which he had no problem with, he did however say he would give Toyota a call to check that the oil I was providing was of sufficient spec which it obviously will be. This would just be to cover their arses in case of an (unlikely) warranty claim from engine failure resulting from the oil.

Anyway, sorry for the long post thought I’d throw some more information out there. I’m now going to go and look at some of the oils linked in earlier posts.

I think that's great customer service! In fact, I enjoyed great customer service at the service department of Toyota Brighton years ago. The person I dealt with has left, though, and my experience from their sales team when looking for a GRY wasn't as good.

Best one I've found is this:

My car is booked in at Durham stoneacre and they were fine with me providing my own oil so that’s good

For what it’s worth, I had my 12 month service done on Friday at Listers in Stratford. Checked prior to leaving the car with them and they used GF-6A and led me to believe that this is now recommended spec from Toyota UK.

Someone whose views on this I trust wrote recently:
Ok, I don’t pretend to know the difference. only reason I thought it might be better is that the efs one specifies turbo cars and mentions that meets/exceeds Toyota spec, the other one doesn’t, I had already ordered the dfe stuff when I spotted the other one. I was going to phone up and cancel the order tomorrow. Should I not bother and just stick with the dfe?

I won't pretend to know the difference either, but I'm confident that by choosing the DFE, you're getting the absolute best for your car. This is also reflected on the price; it's circa 15% higher than the EFS which seems to be more "Eco" focused (think ecological).

For clarity and peace of mind, why don't you phone up and ask them what the difference is? When I spoke to them, they were nice, helpful & professional.

If you manage to get expert insights, let us all know if the DFE is still the king 👑

Had an update, after some more communication with the dealership in Peacehaven. This is the email he had back after checking up on the oil I was going to provide.

I have got a mixture of news for you. Regarding using your own oil, this is the reply from Toyota

<<The only oils that we can approve, are Toyota’s own TGMO product.

We cannot and do not approve other manufacturers oils.>>

I just had confirmation from Toyota that the GF has now become available from toyota in 208l barrels only, we have one on order which will reach us next week. So Yes we could do your service with GF-6 oil please contact our service dept to book in. Best regards

looks like they’re finally switching to GF-6 oil which is good news and should make things less confusing..

Been trying to book in first service first emailing Toyota Bracknell 6 weeks ago querying bringing my own engine oil and full fluid change, first response a few days later saying they'll need to check with garage manager and what oil i'd be supplying

sent them photo of the label for the Millers oil Opie recommended, 2 weeks pass and email saying she's been out of office, will get back to me 'asap', nothing for another 2 weeks sent a chase up email a week ago and nothing, abysmal tbh, you'd think they'd bite your hand off for more money but apparently not 😄🤔,

Time to check elsewhere I suppose

Had my car in Toyota Durham today for first service and radar recall

Provided my own oil and genuine filter and sump washer and they knocked £90 off the price

Done and dusted in 2 hours no issues

Highly recommend Durham Toyota if anyone is in the region
