I did this little mod a few months ago because I couldn't stand the original mirror. Originally I was just going to use a mirror riser like many others but I had difficulty fitting it on and came to the conclusion that it didn't do enough for what I wanted. So, rather than drive without a rear view at all, I bought a little driving instructor mirror and fitted that.
I cut off the suction cup end off the mirror and luckily it was solid so I just drilled a little pilot hole into the middle of it. Then I got the mirror riser and drilled a hole through the middle of that, got a screw and screwed the two together with a couple of nuts between the two so it wouldn't rattle (also to space out a bit because the instructor mirror stalk was a little short). At the end, I ended up with a mirror half the size, raised up to the roof and one which still retained adjustability. Which is essential, because I let my mum drive the car occasionally because she loves it.
