GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

Went to the lakes at the weekend with a bunch of lads which included some roads but mainly drinking…

The convoy included a 997 GT3, 997 turbo, Jaguar XK8, GTI Ed 30 and a Mercedes SL350…. Too much traffic for enjoying the roads during the day, but some good views. Wales is better for driving!

A scare in the GT3 on the return leg which had a low oil warning, 1/2 litre of 0-40 at the Lakes Porsche dealership saved the day.

Were you sat in a traffic jam on the M6 around J29 on Friday afternoon? I saw a GR86 in that colour, the first one I've seen on the road.

Yes, we were heading northbound on Friday afternoon so it may well have been me!!

Did you go over Kirkstone Pass? I was working on the wind turbines up there all of Saturday. it was a scorcher for sure!

I'd probably agree with you there, although the average speed cameras in wales have ruined a lot of it. There are some great roads in the lakes, but you have to get them while theyre Quiet - the afformentioned kirkstone pass is one of them. The GR is a perfect size for it.

If you're heading up the M6 and want some great driving roads - possibly the best in the country - The North Yorkshire Dales and the Northern Pennines just to the east of the M6 are unmatched. There's a small town called Alston. Any route through that town has amazing roads. a mixture of open moorland, twisties and switchback hill climbs / descents.

I live in Kendal so I've explored a lot of the "local" driving. I've put an example route below, but anywhere around the yellow circle has great roads. I often continue east through Sedburgh towards Hawes. it just depends how much fuel you want to use. The stretch betwen brough (at the A66) and Middleton is probably my favorite road and a real test for both car and driver. Then you can head into the lakes from Kendal or Penrith for the boozing / lake activities.

Thanks for the tip! We headed east to the coast on one day to explore the coastal road - bad idea - and did a 50 mile drive on Sunday morning local to Wigton where we were stopping, went on the A66 but traffic was there at 8am… Shropshire roads are much quieter where I am!

Down holidaying in Dorset currently. Wandering around the Weymouth sea front and came across a small car enthusiasts' gathering. (My car is safely tucked away at our accommodation and we were on foot).

@chopper602 as a member of the close-knit 2CV community perhaps you know this car?

I enjoy driving with the windows down, always think the car sounds better than way, but don't enjoy buffeting. It's not too bad in this car, but a few people have said a small set of wind deflectors fitted to the quarter light help. Verus Engineering make a set for 70 dollars (lol). But as they're just plastic strips, a few people have made their own 3D printed versions. Found these on Etsy for £12 so took a punt: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1764350443/anti-buffeting-wind-deflectors-for-2nd?ref=yr_purchases

Unfortunately with international shipping they ended up at about £30 but still...they fit perfectly onto the strip by the quarter light and look very unobtrusive. They don't come fitted with any, but there's a recess in the back to apply your own trim tape so that they stick on almost completely flush. From a quick blast up the dual carriageway, I think they are having an effect. Mind you, perhaps you need to be going faster in order for buffering to really become an issue. But still, I haven't lost anything...if it wasn't for the telltale texture you get with 3D printed parts, you'd be hard pressed to tell they weren't OEM, so it's pretty much a fire and forget modification.

Some say that they increase wind noise with the windows up. That may be the case, but I couldn't tell over the sound of the radio, which I'll almost always have on at cruise anyway.

Yeah must have been the Thurs bike night as there were more bikes than cars.

Didn't get to Portland, but plan to when next down that way (which will be ASAP if I have my way!) so will follow your excellent suggestion!

Washed it. Hardly exciting stuff but thanks to the cretins at Thames water and their hosepipe ban I felt I best give it a freshen up and get rid of the vast collection of dead insects scattered over the bumper, bonnet and a pillars!
