GR Yaris Balance of tuning and durability limits

I am always listening for pinging/detonation when I drive the car hard. My Fiesta ST started pinging after flash-tune one time. Its was a 95 RON tune and it was pinging on 98. Never used the same tuner again.
The last time before that was my GC8 WRX pinging on stale fuel.

Never drive hard with the stereo turn up. You might not hear the rattle until its a smoking mess.

Who tuned your Motec?

This is how a 450 hp engine looks like from a good tunet

Closed deck rebuild, forged pistons, reinforced rods, etc.

Coming back to that a new video was just released from MPS Engineering who are probably the most experienced tuners in Germany when it comes to the this car and probably even in general.
He demonstrates a 500 hp setup and talks about all the work and materials it takes to get there. Part 2 with some street driving is coming too

power peaks at 7.4k, much feel like riot

Saito san will not be the one denying your warranty, it will be Toyota corporate warranty & risk and if they want to void it, they will regardless of what you say. Best to completely avoid the situation with 5w30 is GF6A and SP grades such as Total Quartz 9000 Future with adequate oil cooling, 3,000km changes. Stockpile parts for when the clutch goes as that is engine out anyway.
One of the first things they do in Toyota Europe when having engine problems is to take a sample of the oil in the engine and do an analysis…if the results show that engine is not within 0w20 specs, then whatever happened is not under warranty. So changing to 5w30 oil (or any other, for that matter) means losing your warranty, basically.

Yes, and also only Toyota manufactured/marked oil, we had a meeting recently, and without beating around the bush, Relax warranty will only be honored if every maintenance is all Toyota OEM parts/liquids, oil included, that is why for further maintenances i will be using the much more expensive Toyota OEM oil in stead of Valvoline that is up to spec perfectly, if something were to happen, they can digitally see in the work order what oil was used, so i wont risk it.

I'm not sure why this one hasn't been shared here, but as I said, there's no need to panic. Even at 300kw at the wheels, the factory piston won't fail if you keep the temps, fuel, tune and maintenance solid.

Nice explanation etc, he does say @ 7.20 that if you have a Yaris and its suffering from knock even at stock power levels its very common to shatter a piston.......... wow.

I wonder if the UK GR centres that are openly using Fuchs for example are aware of this policy!

So i guess the internet is true then............. we are all doomed to a shattered piston at some point.
Well, that depends on the circumstances which appear to be quite rare for a stock car. E.g would require a combination of bad fuel, high heat and possibly poor maintenance thrown in for good measure.

In that video you shared, Ryan from powertune says, and i'll quote.

" typically if you have a Yaris engine that has knock problems, you'll break one of these pistons, its very common, and it can happen at stock power levels"

I'm not going to sleep tonight!!!!!!

To save you a restless night, and I am being genuine here, interpret that like this: It is common for a piston to break given circumstances that produce solid knock (bad fuel + high heat + poor maintenance), which can happen at stock power levels.

Thanks, I'll get my bed socks ready x

slight OT but anyone planning to make a custom exhaust manifold, Elmer Racing surely makes nice looking billet collectors to ease the project.

Not much point as the 3 cylinders have their exhaust pulses well seperated already (equalling twin turbo on a six and quad on a V12), other then pure flow optimisation which is minor in the grand scheme of custom exhaust manifolds... Unless really going for top power far beyond what can be considered durable beyond pure dragracing...

Theres always a reason for billet
