GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

I'm dreading service time.

I always maintain my own vehicles and don't beleve any dealership spanner monkey will take care of my vehicles like I will, -They'll sit on the bolsters and everything! It's already had three oil changes at under 5k miles, and it frustrates me that I'll have to pay for another, where they'll then try and upsell me new tyres and brakes.

But as mentioned above, service histroy, warranty.

I'll have a genuine supplied filter form Fensport in the glovebox as backup though...

For my 20k service I'm actually just going to Fensport to get it done, too much stress with a dealer otherwise (and RRG are a long drive away). I'll keep record of the correct oil and filter used if any warranty issue arises.

It's already had one oil change at 1000m done by me. I have another filter, but they wouldn't use it as it's a Subaru part.

With this level if silliness, if I play by all the rules and get it 'serviced' religiously by Toyota I have little faith they'd honour any warranty claim.

I expected way better from Toyota.

At least they have an inherent culture of continuous improvement.

Oh no, wait a minute, your right, they ran out of oil filters last year too.

Was it in a Toyota box?

Tried to have mine serviced today - been booked for a couple of months. Even called two days ago to make sure they had an oil filter, felt a little patronising asking if a main dealer had an oil filter for one of it's cars, but was re-assured that yes they did.

Having taken the morning off and driven a not inconsiderable distance - dropped car off, just over half an hour later with the car not turning a wheel - it was cancelled, they didn't have an oil filter and Toyota can't tell them when they'll be in stock.

Told in no uncertain terms that they couldn't use a Subaru part, so now just waiting...

Also told that they couldn't use 5w30 oil as it isn't recommended and might due irreparable damage.

I thought Mercedes were bad - supercillious yet slap dash. No hint of supercilliousness from Toyota

Quite annoyed - if the car weren't so good (and the 10yr warranty) I'd never darken their handtowels again

Regarding the oil, refer them to page 370 of the owners manual, where it specifies 5w30 as acceptable, and then the following page after talking about 0w20 states “An oil with a higher viscosity (one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions.”

Don’t you love dealership staff who confidently give the wrong information?! 🤦🏻‍♂️

I pointed out the page to Toyota and they refused to acknowledge anything other than 0-W20 was to be used

I feel your pain! Might be worth pointing out to them that the filter the car comes with from factory is a Subaru part!!
number is 15208AA170. Attached, image of mine as supplied with the brand new car form the dealer.

On a side note I've given up on Toyota, using my local Subaru guys who looked after my BRZs and know what they are doing. Oh and actually seem to care about me as a customer.

Tried that.

We don't recommend that sir. Anything but 0w20 risks irreparable damage.

Hey ho. Next closest dealership 70miles away and no guarantee of any less crap. I'd be biblically unhappy if I drove that far and got cancelled. It's not like there are nice roads there.

Yep, also tried that. Allegedly their system can't cope with non toyota parts.

Get the feeling they didn't fancy it.

Perhaps it's me. I thought I had been nice and polite (some of that left me after they cancelled it)?

It seems very dealership staff dependent. My local dealership after a little dialogue (the contact centre handling bookings was initially a blanket “No” until I challenged it with the info in the manual) was happy to use my supplied 5w30 on the understanding of it needed to be the correct specification to uphold the warranty. Fair enough, really.

The filter is bad enough (I have a spare in the garage and will never let that catch me out) however, they should read their own manuals with regards to oil options before making that kind of statement. It was a simple conversation at the dealership I went to, and 5W-30 was used and a sheet added to the service invoice stating the same. Looked like it was printed off of a workshop system, as it was different than the handbook. Was it a GR centre with a GR trained technician doing the service?

It's a GR centre, no one did the service so no clue who it would have been. Felt bad enough asking whether they had a filter, can't imagine the conversation about training records or competency assessments of the person doing it.

Unfortunately the oil thing was exacerbated by me contacting customer relations at toyota, a quote from their email:

'I have spoken to our dedicated parts department within Toyota GB and they have advised the owners manual may mention different oils, for different Markets (and Climates) - Also for emergency use, which then needs to be drained and the correct oil fitted but the the only recommended (and serious damage may occur if incorrect oils used) oil is 0W-20.'

Absurd yet insistent.

Perhaps they are concerned about the harsh winters here in Cornwall.

No hang on a minute...

I thought I'd test my local dealer who supplied the car. Ordered an oil filter. Parts guy said it would there Tuesday. Teesside dealer have one on the shelf. So not sure how Toyota can't tell them when they'll be in stock. I'll keep it on the shelf when (if) it arrives and can use it at next service in February

Does this mean that some of the things I've been told aren't entirely true?

I fear I'll just be marked down as a difficult customer.

Never mind, I'll get over it.

Stuff like this makes my head spin off.

Perhaps you may be better of speaking to their undedicated parts department.

Just called my dealership and filter and gasket in stock so will collect Monday and keep in my garage until service is due (December) just in case they happen to be out of stock by then.

Thought I'd have a crack at the minor damage I did the other day. Popped to Halfords and picked up the TCut Colourfast stuff in "mid blue"...seems to be a good match for electric blue.

It's removed the lighter scratches okay, but there's still some scuffs. But I need to get the Chipex out to do the chips, when I do I might try 'smearing' it onto the scuffs and then polishing. Not sure how well that will work but we'll see, I'll do it when the bumper is off and I'm not crouched at the kerbside.
