GR Yaris (Gen 2) GR Yaris Mk2 (MY2024->)

I just noticed that the carbon fiber vinyl is gone in the new model, I don't think this was mentioned before.-

That caption is incorrect though, it’s the same roof construction for the original, just with added vinyl to cover the Howdens Granite effect kitchen worktop aesthetic (jokes).

I'm glad Mk1 does not have body colour rear spoiler, prefer quite bit more the black one.

btw that diff cooler in one of the pics above is HUGE. I have now radiator envy as thought my oil cooler is largest on the planet. :ROFLMAO:
What do we think / know the cooler is for? Engine oil? A/T oil? etc. Apologies if I have missed it in previous chat.

You're right, it hasn't gotten a cage and many other attributes. But you're also wrong. Car was developed 50% tarmac and 50% off road, and even completely stock with a proper driver it would show its heels to a lot of lower division pure bred rally cars in tarmac and light gravel rallies.

There was German TV program that ran a stock car with a rally driver down a rallycross dirt track on PS4S an it's laptime was competitive with awd rallycross Polos and Fabias...

I couldn’t disagree more. The car we drive was developed strictly for road use, and Toyota did an amazing job brainwashing everyone that it’s ready for light rallying in stock form. It’s not. Never was. I don’t believe for a second that, in stock form, the GRY could outperform many lower-division purebred rally cars. It simply wouldn’t.

The GRY in stock form is a compromise in every conceivable way. The suspension, while excellent for the street, would bottom out and fall apart at the first major rally-like obstacle, whether it’s a significant dip or a pothole at higher speeds. The brakes would overheat, and the pads and fluid would degrade in less than 10 minutes of intense, hardcore driving. The list of limitations goes on.

While the stock suspension and brakes perform amazingly on the street, they are not designed to handle the rigorous demands of rallying.

There’s a reason why a Rally2 car costs something like 300k Euros. These vehicles are engineered with specific reinforcements, components, and features that enable them to withstand the extreme demands of rallying. I bet that if you compared components, 95% of everything on the Rally2 car is not shared with our cars.

.. and off road was clearly part of the design brief, and plenty of footage of development cars on gravel, so not sure what you're on about. But yes it's a road car by the definition homologated as a road legal car.

10 minutes? A rally stage is rarely longer then 10 minutes. And I clearly said lower division rally cars and tarmac or light gravel. There are classes for near stock cars and if you only did the bare necessary to enter safety equipment but didn't change the suspension you would need to slow down more in some parts but overall will still be faster then a big bunch of the cars you can see in a local rally. They make a hell of a lot of a racket, but they aren't necessarily fast... This isn't theoretical, quite a few GR Yaris have passed by my screen in near stock form and do well with a good driver. Mäkinen himself said you can rally this car, just don't do it on public road*... I mean, if there ever was a road car (yes it is) that you could throw in 'a' rally (not Rally2/3/4), it's this one....

If I ever return to this platform, I will make it my mission to prove you're wrong 😜

* hey nobody was around so it wasn't public at that point in time...

OneHp summed it up well. The GR Yaris is a very capable rally car out of the box with a few safety mods. The GR Yaris Iberian cup is a good example of this. Cars are built to group n4 spec, no longer an international class but can be rallied at a national level (no mods to chassis, just a cage and some other protection like sump guards). Full specs here;

To be fair they have different dampers and springs, and different clutch and an oil cooler. Still if one would be stubborn, one could skip those and be a little slower but not massively so. In the end a bit theoretical exercise, even a GT3 RS that is regularly tracked will do some small mods to improve reliability, but that doesn't mean the out of the box car isn't very capable...

I agree. We also have over here "Rahvaralli" which is basically a public rally series. Closed roads, standard road car - although some of the GR Yaris over here run the smaller RC brakes to allow for smaller gravel wheels. GR's over here have had a few wins. BMWs are very popular.

I’ve seen on the Japanese options the roof vinyl is now an option in two finishes. Standard and forged.

Why don't we get this choice!?! Cmon Toyota :) I will do it anyways as soon as I get a car, but it will cost more than an option probably. I will put XPEL PPF on it.

and syvecs and maybe center diff removed with mech clutch slip discs as lsd? or do they still run the magical center clutch pack?

Solid reason for all the (already lucky) Gen1 owners to keep their beauty - 🇬🇷 fella here 🙂

Any announcement whether any of the Ogier/Rovanperä editions are coming to Greece?

Found a cool piece online this morning about GR Production. Loads of photos of MK2 GR Yaris being built and the current production line (Yaris and Corolla on the same production line).

thank you very much!!!!

Stuff like this makes me appreciate the cars even more. They aren't just run-of-the-mill cars with a bigger engine slapped into them. They are truly special and real work is put into them.
