GR86 What did you do with your GR86 today

Attended the 'Smiles Per Gallon' show at Lochore Meadows Country Park in Fife. Managed to get the GR86 a 'special mention' in Going Places 110 Youtube channel both (at 3:56) here and again (at 9:38) here.

I took delivery of a nice big jug of oil, filter and crush washer for my "between service interval" oil change.

Given i dont do all that many miles i feel like it's maybe overkill, but for around the price of filling up with fuel, i think its worthwhile.

I also got one of those fire extinguisher stick things. Upgraded fuel system + a hot turbo under the bonnet makes me - not parranoid l, but feeling as though the exrra caution is well placed. I'd rather have a lightly singed car than a written off one. But preferably neither.
Hoping to find some time this weekend to do this and also install the steering wheel spacer that i bought off another member months ago and havent fit yet.

Let me know when you find somewhere to mount the Fire Safety stick - mine is currently down the side of the passenger seat, but it comes with a little clip-in mount

Last Weekend in Wales what a blast it was

After 2 mins of looking around, I just chucked it in the glove box. With the service book in there, It stays right at the front where it's very easy to grab in a hurry. I practiced a couple of times before realising I felt like Rob Brydon in the Machete scene so I called it a day there.

Had the door cards off and put felt washers on for the window. Put a set of Focal IS Toy 165 in and some sound deadening.

Then another package arrived. Put some matte carbon fiber over the middle console as it was scratched something silly and put some covers on the kiddo seat poppers under the rear window.

The speakers are great value for money. I'm not too fussy about audio as a listener but being able to turn the radio up a bit more without hearing the cones starting to break up is a relief for my ears.

Parts finally arrived at the bodyshop last week, so they came and picked up my car up for repair. Still a bit apprehensive about getting a quality repair; I'm hoping that the fact that the electric blue is a flat colour means it's easier to match and blend. I remember my pearlescent white GT86 being a nightmare for any sort of paint matching. Have also asked if they can look at a door ding while it's in, and also a small windscreen chip.

In the meantime, insurance has sorted me an E-class estate which is a pretty nice thing to cut around in for a while. It was parked behind the GR outside my house, and as the lady from the bodyshop drove the GR away, it set the Mercedes alarm off; perhaps the HKS exhaust is louder than I give it credit for :D

Haha. When i had a work van, My 86 used to set it's alarm off if i rolled past it too slowly. Just blame the legislation that forces cold starts. :geek:

Just picked it up from the body shop. Looking good :)

The finish is perhaps not quite as good as the professionally-detailed wings and bonnet; there's a hint of orange peel. However the colour match is good, which is what I was most worried about. Often find that repainted front bumpers can look off from the rest of the car, especially in photos, but I can't really see a difference.

Also, as I walked straight up to it and started nosing around as soon as I arrived, an older guy who'd done the work came out and started chatting. I got a good vibe that he'd taken a lot of pride in it. He was obviously happy that I was pleased with the work. Only downside was that they weren't able to do the door ding - they quoted something like £500 due to it being in a tricky area. I might try and find a PDR specialist, but the guy's advice was that it might be best to just live with it.

As I said earlier, I didn't get the ceramic coating done again. I don't have the original invoices, and the place where I had it done doesn't really do consumer work anymore, they've transitioned to a more detailing teaching and supply business. So rather than deal with trying to get it all done again on insurance, I just wanted the car repaired and then I might get the coating done again off my own back. But at the moment, my priorities are a little different, so I will see how it goes; might have a crack at doing it myself with the consumer version of the coating it's got on it at the moment (GTechniq Crystal Serum). For now, I've got a nice fresh bumper with no stone chips and the annoying scuff that's been bothering me for a couple of years taken care of :)

Glad you're happy with the repair. It sounds like you had the perfect guy for the job.

For these sort of areas I’d give it a go yourself with something like Infinity Wax Synergy Lite, which is a 1 year coating and is a lot more forgiving in application than Gtechniq CSL. Also, you only get the full 5 yr warranty with CSL if professionally applied. I used Synergy Lite on my re-painted Ducktail and it held up well. Nice repair job, I’m happy for you!

Thanks, I'll look into that. Must admit, I like the idea of stuff that's just spray on and wipe off; even if it's not as long lasting, it doesn't matter if it's easy to do.

This is what I have bought for my i3 and wife's swift sport. Not used it yet but I picked based on the fact its the safest and easiest option of applying a genuine 9H cermanic coating outside. If its as forgiving and straight forward as it says it is, its a very good value coating to apply once a year. I also picked up their panel wipe to ensure it goes on easy and lasts as long as possible.

I wonder if it can be applied on top of the GTechniq CSU?. I'm not sure if the bodyshop had to do any blending of paint on the wings, so for belt and braces, I'd probably overlap the whole front end with the Infinity stuff if it's as good as advertised. In fact I wouldn't be averse to doing the whole car.... apparently it works well for filling minor swirls, and despite my best efforts, I've still had some develop over the years.

I wouldn't have any concerns with overlapping the Synergy over CSU, it will bond to it, but I'd imagine it will have a shorter life, which doesn't doesn't matter as you have the CSU under it anyway, like you say its a belt and braces way of covering it all with something. I would probably leave it a month or 2 before putting anything on fresh paint though. Could also be a good opportunity for PPF?

FFS don't make me spend more money!
