This is why this forum is Gold. Thanks.Had a mystery ticking noise from the car, first thought from wheels or brakes, several times per wheel revolution, no change with gears. But it was only there off throttle and when cold. What could it be?
It was in fact...
The heat shield between the fuel tanks going against the driveshaft. Off throttle rocks engine forward so pushing forward part driveshaft up (which had me looking at the front far too long) AND, back half down as it is supported in the middle, striking the heat shield. Heat from the exhaust then expanded the heat shield away from interference. No idea how it ended up there, haven't done any work in the area hence me posting.
Only took me a few weeks to figure it out

After a simple pull down of the heat shield by hand
Agreed. I had this sound and thought it was the brake disk shield, bent it slightly, but then it came back so could actually be this instead. Hard to describe to somebody or a garage so this is ideal. This is why this forum is Gold. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed Cefyn Bryn. Gower is very busy these days (esp. in summer) and all 40mph now, so won’t be going for drives there much.drive on Cefyn Bryn road at your suggestion - loved it . Then watched Llanelli play Swansea ( I’m big into my rugby - union or league ) , few beers after parking up the car ! Back home to West Sussex tomorrow. The GR is made for roads in Wales. Think I may be visiting Wales even more now !!
Head west to Sunny Pembrokeshire.Glad you enjoyed Cefyn Bryn. Gower is very busy these days (esp. in summer) and all 40mph now, so won’t be going for drives there much.
I’ve been in Wales two weeks now. I tried to reply to this thread back then but internet was playing up as 4G mast was down from a storm (country life eh?).
I’m loving the driving so far. I’m just heading off in random directions and finding great roads. Helps that you have them to yourself of course!
Yesterday I discovered this beautiful bit of singletrack that snakes up from Ammanford to the Black Mountains. Got to this car park at the top and it’s obviously driving Nirvana up here, it was performance cars and sports bikes everywhere and even guys waiting on the hairpins getting photos of oversteer moments. I had to disappoint here as a) had my doggos in the front seat and b) didn’t fancy being the English nobhead binning the GR in front of the locals.
There were sections of this road that the GR was made for, narrow twisting undulating tarmac where the 4wd was actually necessary, it felt so good.
I also really noticed this thing that many owners have mentioned, the suspension works better at a higher speed, it seems to just float over the bumps and ruts, feeling a bit lumpen and crashy at typical (stuck behind someone) speeds.

Zoomed in from the top of the black mountain.

On the way back (whippet driving), this is a rare straight bit.
As this is the ‘What did you do to your GR Yaris today?’ thread, and I’ve gone massively off-topic, I washed it when I got back.

Boring.
Any other owners in Swansea area/South Wales want to meet up? Are there any Caffeine & Machine type places around these parts?
