GR Yaris What did you do to your GR Yaris today?

Changed to fourth set of pads at 77,000 km, DS2500 again as they have been brilliant.

Front discs have some life left in them yet. My digital calipers “broke” (thanks, son!) so I can’t be super accurate, but with a steel rule and a steady eye they look to have at least a millimetre left.

The discs have been on since January 2024. The first set lasted nearly two years so this pair look to be lasting about the same*.

Will check the rears tomorrow. Have pads, but they weren’t needing done last time I looked.

*Edit: New thickness is only 28 mm (I thought it was 30 mm) so they have a bit more life left in them yet (my bank balance approves!). Will need to measure the thickness properly.

And rears done, fitted OE-spec Brembos, let’s see how they hold up.

I could’ve left them on for a bit yet I reckon, they don’t get anything like the abuse of the fronts and these have been on for over four years.

Wear was pretty even although one pad, the right one above, was almost completely jammed by old brake dust so that it clearly wasn’t moving fully.

It was wiggling a bit but I couldn’t get the purchase on it to pull it fee. Had to remove the caliper to knock it out, scraped all the crud from the inside of the caliper while it was off.

I won’t leave them so long next time before removing, cleaning and refitting.

Yes, every time I do brake pads it is an utter nightmare because of the dust and it doubles the time as something is always seized or welded on. And every time I swear I’ll do some routine cleaning between that and the next change, but it’s never happened

Yeah, given they were in there for four years they weren’t actually too bad I guess.

The Yaris has such lovely, easy brakes to work on though, seems silly not just spending 45 mins every year or so cleaning things up.

Yes, learned my lesson and when I did one set of brakes recently it was much easier to remove the old pads (used CeraTec thats in a blue tube).

I've stopped using stuff like that.

I was always a copaslip guy, but having had other people look after my cars for so many years so a bit out of the loop and I was told this ceramic stuff is the new hotness so I used it when I swapped the pads on the Yaris the first time.

When they came out the residual gunk was a nightmare to clean off so I thoroughly cleaned everything up before putting the new pads in without any anti-seize.

When I had to change those pads it was a pleasure; super easy to get them out and almost nothing to clean up.

Same this time. Just a little buff on the shims with a brass brush and a quick wipe with a damp cloth on the inside of the caliper and round the piston to get rid of any pad material build up.

I'm going in dry from now on!

I mean need to try to keep on top of things, so fewer steps wise is better. I’ve also sometimes gotten new retaining pins as part of a kit because once the frustration seemed worth it. But maybe need a dremel with wire attachment to be honest, would let me do what you do.

Removed the floor undercovers to see how much dirt I'm carrying (not much) and how the rust protection is doing (very well).
Went without raising the car as access seemed adequate anyway. After fighting the first one for half an hour removing recessed clips and looking for a suitable tool for those awkward Toyota undercover "nuts", I decided I needed better tools.

Got windscreen replaced, you can see my thoughts here (cba to type it all out again and doesn’t fit with this topic, but not super impressed with my local autoglass branch. As long as it’s sealed properly then I’m fine with it I guess).

I do still like my car but at the moment I’m going through a bit of a rough patch with it and sorely tempted to trade in for a GR86 and pay the difference in cost. Think it’s just due to it getting to the mileage where lots of things seem to be happening / due for a swap, and general lack of enjoyment on the roads near me at the moment.
