GR Yaris What did you do to your GR Yaris today?

I went to Bedford Autodrome in mine yesterday (second time). Felt better than in April but the session with the instructor was eye opening as to how much you could push the car - almost don’t feel worthy of it as I am fairly timid. Especially being on the power sooner in corners and braking less. I must admit that I was slightly scared - taking the chicane on the back straight during the lesson at about 30 mph faster than I had been previously was eye opening…that point was sort of proven when I went sideways through it at 90 (just managed to hold onto it, what a rush and testament to the car but don’t fancy repeating that!)

I guess the mindset of a racing driver is different to mine and so I’ll never be super quick, but still very much learning and hopefully it’ll all come in due course.

There was a twist though as the good old reliable Yaris had to then become a taxi and gave 3 fully grown passengers a lift for an hour or so back to Oxford train station due to two cars needing recovery from the track with mechanical issues. Quite cool to think it was able to do that but I guess it’s arguably a hatchback.

I think I will try a less flat out circuit next, perhaps Anglesey, but that won’t be for a bit.

Got my car detailed, ceramic coating refreshed, PPF fixed. Detailer kinda confirmed "soft paint" theory, because in his opinion tar and iron went way too deep into the paint. Will try to decontaminate it more often.

Did a trackday on Grobnik @ ~34°C.
6 laps in: lost AWD (running @HRNSHN-Racing rear diff/ITCC vent and Cusco diff cover, but not sure if I had the AWD software update yet which should help), powersteering started failing mid corners, oil hit 130°C (small Setrab oil cooler and hood vents cooling it) so was time for a cooldown lap.
Tbh, was hoping current mods would keep things a bit cooler for longer.

Got mine out of service yesterday and had the alignment redone. Had the opportunity to test a few nice cars as well:
(i) CTR FL5: a very nice and grown up car; the build quality is impressive. It is surely a 10/10 on the Autobahn. I tested it on some twisted roads and while it was fast, it lacked a bit in the smile department - fun comes well after prison mode (I didn’t go there). I got out of the car and thought perhaps to look for an old model….
(ii) GRY Mk2 auto: They definitely worked well on the known flaws of the Mk1 - seating position & visibility is good now (still would take out the rear view mirror tough, because its just better again…) , the suspension is just right now and - apart from an alignment - I wouldn’t feel the need to change anything (have H&R swaybars F&R on my Mk1). It was really nice in the bends. I didn’t bond with the auto tough: it felt like a change in character of the car; it felt more like a cruiser now; surely making it a better and more accessible daily.
(iii) GR86: This one blew me away. Fun factor 12/10. If money and parking space wouldn’t be an issue, I‘d have bought the car on the spot.
(iv) A Mk1 with an Öhlins R&T and 255/35/18 tyres on it: The car was lowered quite a bit and it felt really nice and comfortable to drive and super planted in the bends. It will be a tough decision once my shocks are worn to stay OEM or go for the R&T.

To close the day, I went out with mine on the same roads. The seat is lowered, the rearview mirror not there, the narrow 205/50/17 tyres along with the stiffer swaybars and the alignment (camber F/R -2.3/-1.5, toe out front 1mm and rear 0.8mm in total) make me smile like in the GR86 well before reaching prison mode. So all cool… 😎

Wait, so you literally yanked the mirror out? Or did I misunderstand? Is this your daily?

That‘s correct. The rear view mirror is legally not required here and it is my daily. I also don’t miss it at all, as it didn’t do the job (for me….).

After a decent wash I removed the hidden 3 bungs under the doors to allow the excess water to drain, genius whoever suggested that!!

Try also remove the front undertray. Which always wobbles around

as for the OPF delete - have you used the original OE gaskets, or did whifbitz supply some own gaskets? hvala!
