GR Yaris What did you do to your GR Yaris today?

I gave mine its annual wash (only half joking). I utterly hate washing a car/anything to do with bodywork and probably end up scratching it and making it worse than if I'd left it, despite best efforts with snow foam, catch guard in the bucket etc. It is nice to see the original lines though and it does look a bit better.

Anyway, found this nice paint chip on the front wing (2nd photo, was taken pre wash so definitely wasn't from me). It's about half a thumbnail long but just wondering what best course of action would be?

I don't mind if it stays as in my experience touch up paint never seems to look nice, but just wondering on the best way to stop it progressing. Pretty sure this panel is aluminium but that can obviously still get corrosion.

It is steel I think. Doors, boot and bonnet are definitely aluminium https://mag.toyota.co.uk/gr-yaris-bodywork-how-it-is-bespoke/

I found my first chip (~4mm wide) on the lip of a rear arch and sorted it this week using paint from Toyota UK'S eBay store. That was my first attempt at fixing a stone chip but after cutting back the excess lacquer that I applied and light hand polish it's very hard to spot. I was a bit worried about how the colour would come out on the chip as I've got pearlescent paint but it is a good match. Worth dealing with it sooner rather than later I reckon

Argh, yes I think you’re correct with only a handful of the panels being aluminium, wasn’t sure if this was one too.

I'll get onto it asap then, thanks for the comment. Sadly it’s been in the elements. I’ll look at a smart repair since it’s bare metal (damn the thin paint!), but perhaps touch up kit will do it. It’s a tiny area but the main concern is avoiding any rust setting in so perhaps need to find some inhibitor first?

So I had some light surface rust in the chip and was told to use deox gel, then a small dab of zinc primer using a cocktail stick followed by the paint and lacquer.

The alternative advice I was given was to use a fibreglass pen to get the chip down to bare metal, degrease with isopropanol then paint immediately. But I wasn't sure if that'd be fine should I decide to keep the car long term and so I went with the first method.

I'd prefer to go with an inhibitor just in case

Thanks, that’s helpful. No visible rust yet but I had a can of Dinitrol inhibitor/primer in the garage. Unfortunately it’s the amber rather than colourless stuff, but I gave everything a clean earlier then, using a cotton bud sprayed with the Dinitrol, swabbed over it to form a little bit of a barrier and seal it up.

It’s not ideal but should stop anything from happening until I can sort somebody out to do a small repair on it and fix another scuff from ages ago, which was luckily on the bumper.

Aero Package Bonnet now painted and installed, absolutely chuffed with it, sods law it started to rain as I parked up though. Probably going to look at selling the original as soon as I've cleaned it up.

Why did you have to have it painted? I thought they came already painted.
Looks great though

IIRC, the WRC rules that Toyota was working from at the time required the rally car to use the road car's hood, roof, hatch, and doors. So we got those parts in Al and CF so that the rally car could have them in Al and CF as well. It's also why we got two doors with the lowered roof-line-- things the team wanted for aero that had to be homologated on the road cars. The teams could use different fenders, so no need to homologate Al fenders.

They could also change the drivetrain, so they didn't need to homologate the engine or the AWD, either. We got those, I suspect, because why not? and because an expensive 2 door Yaris would be a hard sell if it performed like all the other Yari.

The Rally1 rules changed a lot (all?) of that. However, the Rally2 car may've also benefitted from those features being homologated.

Started on the Cusco/Safety 21 rear cage install. Just the rear 4p with custom ordered X brace and lower cross brace.

Total out with seats and all of the seat hardware, seat belts, etc. is 20.1kg. GRMN rear floor kit is 2.8kg, and the roll bar is 17kg, and the Cusco padding is pretty light, so weight is a wash, or at least no additional weight for the bar :)
