GR86 Waze

Thought it worth asking if anyone isn‘t aware of Waze ?

These days the only infotainment I’m interested in on any car is a DAB radio and Apple Car play so I can hook up my phone and get Waze on it for sat nav, traffic , and helpful alerts from other Wazers , particularly accidents , police etc. Toyota give it free 👍 , to get it on a Mini you have to buy the Sat Nav pack just to get Apple Car play at £900 🤬

I believe the USB point is in the centre arm rest on the GR86 so a short connector cable and the phone will be safely tucked away whilst driving too 👍
 
I'm not the biggest fun of Waze's UI when compared to something minimalistic like Google Maps, and some of the routing suggestions are quite questionable (traffic on M25 - just go through Central London!), but its ability to provide real time hazard updates, including stationary and mobile smurfs, is second to none! :D

On a related note, I wish the GR86 had a little more space to store your phone, considering the Apple Carplay and Android Auto are wired only, but thankfully there are some extra cupholders in the door compartements so it should be usable day to day regardless.
 
Does the GR86 have traffic sign recognition 🤔 not seen it mentioned

Some of us get an extra cup holder , bit pricey though 😉
 
Agreed on UI, I much prefer google maps although Waze is still useful even if you're not using navigation.

A friend on mine has a universal wireless carplay adapter that apparently works vey well. Much slicker than having to fish out your phone every journey and have it rattling around

Does that plug into the USB port?
 
I used to use Waze all the time, but found the routing to be very hit and miss, particularly around London. Not much fun when the traffic is making you late for a meeting, then Waze takes you on a magical mystery tour!

For the last few years I've used Google maps with Tom Tom AmiGo camera / speed alerts running as an overlay on my phone screen.

It's a good combination, but I doubt that I'll be able to use it with Android Auto, so will have to go back to Waze.

This combo worked perfectly on Android Auto in my Mustang.

You just get voice alerts for cameras from AmiGo.

However, Waze was bought by Google, so a lot of the alerts are now in Google Maps!

Just under £80 ($99) with shipping on sale until 09/05 from the company's website (if I have the right link), not a bad price overall if it works well!

What’s the overall benefit? If you use the wifi adapter presumably your phone can’t be plugged in to the USB keep it charged ? My iPhone battery drops rapidly if I’m using Waze , Spotify etc and not plugged in to charge up 🤔

I believe there are two USB ports in the centre console compartment. :)
 
the benefit of wireless for me is for those short journeys where you wouldn't be bothered to plug your phone in but it's still useful to have music come on automatically, camera alerts and messages read out
 
I too hate the Waze UI but I use it for long journeys / fun drives for the speed alerts. Google maps has started integrating waze alerts but its nowhere near as comprehensive. Waze continues running in the background even without a route programmed so I turn on voice alerts and run google maps for my route sometimes - that way you get to use Google Maps routing whilst still having Waze announce cameras etc.

From what I understand the carplay in the GR86 is very hit or miss in America and picky with USB cables so not looking forward to that.

As far as I know the GR86 hasn't got speed camera recognition although the Auto models with the EyeSight camera may be different

I’ve had issues in some cars with iPhone and Apple car play, all been resolved by using a cable from Apple , I’m convinced the software rejects stuff not made by Apple 🤬

People have said Android is the same and many had it sorted with genuine cables but some didn't, which makes me think the issue is the port itself. I've never had a car with carplay before but I don't get why it can't just be done over bluetooth?

TBH IPhone and Apple Car play is usually pretty reliable , the CEO once had to have an Android phone for her work and it was a 🤬 to connect and was totally unreliable , in the end she just gave up on car play with it.

wireless requires both bluetooth and wifi. Bluetooth for handshake and then pass over to wifi for the bandwidth needed to stream the map data etc
 
I'm still using TomTom device. Found that the traffic and re-routing is the best in the business and doesn't rely on wifi. Waze as a second.
